Buster_ESPN Heard this: The Reds are interested in acquiring Gary Matthews, Jr. from the Mets in the event Angel Pagan wins NY's CF job (as expected).

Blah.

I'm assuming this is a mis-timed April fool's joke?

Why? He's terrible. I watched the Mets/Cards game on MLB Network today and came away very unimpressed with Matthews' defense in CF. He misplayed at least one flyball in the couple innings I watched. I even made the comment that I was glad the Reds decided to stay away from him. Guess I spoke too soon. He was a good defender earlier in his career but not anymore. He's not an upgrade over Balentien, Dickerson, Gomes, or Nix.

This would be a very Reds move to make

He'd be cheap, he'd be a classic Jocketty PU (the Cards were always acquiring guys that I was lost on why they were making the move)

This is what they think about when they take Stubbs/Dickerson out of there.

Still not as scary as Willy is it?

I'd consider the source of the twit that tweeted and what he probably left off of this information. With the Reds budget situation, I can't see the Reds overpaying to get him.

Most of Matthews salary is being paid by the Angels- Something like 20 mil of the remaining 22.

Update: Mets on hook for $1mil per year, Angels paying the other 21.5 mil.

No way Gary Matthews becomes the Reds' fourth or fifth outfielder. He'd start. I hate post-roid guys.

johnfayman #Reds source on Gary Matthews Jr.: Zero interest. Listed 5 OFs in camp he'd take over Matthews.

I can see the Reds going with Bruce, Stubbs, Gomes, Dickerson, Matthews.

Balentien and Nix wouldn't make the team in that scenario.

Fay responds:

Seems like just another example a NY reporter just assuming that a team from a flyover state would gladly take the trash of a Coastal team.

Buster Olney remains as flexible a human being as I have ever seen, to talk out of that particular part of his anatomy.

Not that I want him on the Reds but it was pretty windy at that game. Colby Rasmus misplayed an easy fly ball in the first inning hit by none other than the Private.

True, but he just looked so slow out there. UZR had him at -14.5 in the outfield last season and based on what I saw today, I can see why he was rated so low.

I didn't see much of the game after the 1st inning. I was home sick and slept through most of it.

You picked the wrong day to get sick. The Reds are on TV tomorrow. :)

The Reds being on TV tomorrow is a nice little birthday gift from Fox Sports Ohio.

The opening part was the best

John Fay, the Reds beat reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer posted to his twitter that according to a Reds source, Cincinnati has “Zero Interest” in Gary Matthews Jr. and they have 5 other players on roster that they would rather have then Matthews Jr

This response makes more sense then this rumor. It would seem to fly in the face of what Jocketty is building to acquire someone like Matthews. And while early in the offseason we talked about reducing payroll, I think the Reds seemed to have arrived at a workable figure for this year. Unloading a contract at this moment seems to be "old news," not something based on reality. That's not to say one of the big guys couldn't be moved later in the season, but it won't be until either Chapman arrives or Volquez is back and doing alright.

I'll just put this in here. From Jon Morosi of Foxsports:

In Arizona now. Source says #Reds telling people they probably won't trade unless there's an injury.

Makes you wonder. Buster says the Reds have interest, Fay says zero interest. Fay may not be Peter Gammons when it comes to writing, but I'd have to think his sources are better than Olney's in this case.

I call shenanigans on Olney's part here.

I think it's just laziness. Sees story that the Mets may need to do something with Matthews if the other guy makes the club. Pulls out old clippings as to who might need to unload salary. Oh, they're talking to the Reds.
