Here is the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 3-23-10. Lance hosted the show and Marty joined him by phone from Arizona. Lance asked Marty about Chapmanís injury and what concern was there in Reds camp over it. Marty said thereís not a great deal of concern about it but heíd be surprised he comes back and pitches when itís his turn. He said they will probably err on the side of caution (You think?) and it opens up that 5th starting position. Lance said that because of this, they probably wonít be able to stretch him out enough to get him to pitch in the rotation to begin the season. Marty agreed and said the only way they could do that is if he pitches on Friday and he goes 5 plus innings after that. Marty said it wouldnít surprise him if Leake or Wood has the inside track to be the 5th starter. Lance asked if Lehr would be better equipped to handle the unique responsibilities that come with the 5th starter. Marty said he probably is and if Chapman starts in the minors and is eventually promoted to the big leagues, Lehr could handle it better than the younger pitchers probably could. Marty said that if Wood pitches very well, the Reds might want to take a flyer on Wood the first month of the season. Lance said it speaks volumes for Leake that heís even being considered for that spot since he was pitching in college a year ago. Marty said Wood probably has the edge because of experience but if the Reds hadnít signed Chapman, Leake would have been the one in the spotlight. Marty said this is his first ST ever and he has handled it like a walk in the park. He added that he has as much moxie, maturity, and innatability to set up hitters as any young pitcher heís seen and predicts that he will be a major factor in the Reds rotation in the near future.

Lance said the offense has struggled lately and asked if Marty is concerned. Marty said heís a little bit concerned and Dusty himself said that in Arizona ERAs and batting averages are inflated. Marty said the batting averages arenít inflated a bit with the Reds and he doesnít know what reason they could give except that the veterans will hit when the bell rings but Opening Day is less than 2 weeks away and the Reds havenít hit at all. He said if it continues into the weekend, he will be concerned.

After commercial, the caller asked if Chapman got upset after Suttonís error and if anyone has separated themselves from the pack for the LF job. Marty said Chapman didnít appear upset and if Sutton doesnít make that error, Chapman gets out of the inning. He said no one has claimed the LF job yet but he thinks Gomes would love to be the everyday LFer. He said that Dusty has cautioned that breaking balls are much sharper once the season begins but Gomes has had an excellent spring. Lance asked if Bruce, Stubbs, Dickerson and Gomes make the team, who is the 5th OFer. Marty said itís between Nix, Balentien and Francisco and Balentien is out of options so he may have the advantage. He said Nix has had a decent spring offensively and defensively and Francisco has to develop greater patience at the plate but down the road, heís going to be a big run producer. Marty said if it were up to him it would either Francisco or Nix.

The next caller asked if Dickerson could play CF on a regular basis and Gomes could play LF daily. Marty said Dickersonís a better CFer than LFer and even though Stubbs has had a slow start he has heated up. He said if he were a betting man, Stubbs would be the starting CFer and Dickerson would platoon in LF.

The next caller asked that now that the Reds have Cabrera and several other kids to play SS, is there any possibility that Janish doesnít make the team. Marty said thatís a real possibility. Marty said what has enhanced his chances is that Miles has been hurt and Chris Burke has looked better than Miles even though Miles will probably make the team because heís making $2.7M. He said Janishís experience and defense are plusses but his bat is a big minus.

After commercial, Lance asked if Marty is encouraged by Harangís ST performance. Marty said he is. He said his velocity is consistent to what it was when he was one of the best pitchers in the league.

The next caller asked if they had an opinion of the proposed realignment. Marty hadnít heard of it and Lance explained. Marty said heís a traditionalist on some things and not on others. He said he wouldnít mind seeing a setup with small market teams in one division and big market teams in another. He thinks full revenue sharing like the NFL would be the best way to solve the problems of the competitive imbalance.

The next caller asked why everyone wants to trade Bronson. Lance said that every once in a while he will have a poor start but you can count on him for 200 IP, about 12-15 wins and 30 starts. Marty agreed and said his durability is unparalleled. Heíd like to see him win more consistently early in the year though and heís one of the few guys heíd pay to watch pitch.

The next caller asked if the Reds should trade Cordero because of all the good young bullpen arms and fire Dusty and get it over with since they wonít bring him back next year. Lance said that the chances are slim and none in getting someone to trade for him because heís making a boatload of money. He also doesnít know if the Reds feel Masset is ready for the closerís gig yet. Marty said if the Reds stay healthy and the Reds donít have a winning season, he may not be given a new contract.

After commercial, the next caller asked how many pitchers will make the club and if only 11 make it, will Francisco make the team. Marty said that he thinks they will take 12 because Dusty likes to demand less of the starters early in the season so they can be strong in the latter part of the year. He said they would probably take Castillo instead of Francisco since heís so versatile.

Lance asked Marty if Micah Owings would make the team. Marty said it could come down to Lincoln and Owings and if that is the case, Owings probably has the edge because he can pinch hit in the latter innings if they donít need a long reliever. Lance mentioned Lincolnís making $2.5M this year. Marty said that will play a part in the decision.

The next caller asked why donít the Reds just rotate Dickerson, Stubbs, Bruce and Gomes on a regular basis. Marty said thatís a possibility but they will probably play Bruce every day unless itís once in a blue moon but a rotation will probably be the norm for the rest of them. Lance said the rap against Dickerson is that he gets injured a lot and maybe platooning will keep him healthier. (Not a bad thought but itís not like Dickersonís a geezer and needs rest to keep him fresh.) Marty said that if Dickerson is going to be a big time major league player he needs to stay healthy and play through little injuries.

After commercial, the next caller asked why everyone expects Janish to hit the cover off the ball since he only got a handful of ABs before they traded Gonzalez. He also said Janish is hitting very well this spring -better than Cabrera. Marty said if he is, itís a shock to him. (Prepare to be shocked, Marty. Janish is out hitting Cabrera by a great deal although Cabrera has had twice the ABs Janish has had.) Marty said you have to look at what Janish hit after he moved into the lineup fulltime. He said Cabreraís a .280 lifetime hitter and they donít know if Janish can even hit .250. He said if Janish could hit .250 heíd be a fulltime player. Lance said Janish is a .261 hitter in the minors. Marty said if he could hit that good in the majors heíd be a starter. He said you canít go on what a guy hits in the minors. He added that there has never been a greater disparity between the majors and minors than there is now and you take what a guy hits in the minors with a much larger grain of salt than you did 15-20 years ago. (Now the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.Ö)

Thus endeth the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 3-23-10. So let it be written. So let it be done.

I second the thanks. For what ever reason I enjoy reading your threads on the Hot Stove and it probably takes a bit of time on your part.

I actually think the last caller makes a decent point for once.I look for the Yanish/Cabrera argument to be one of the most debated topic here in RZ land this upcoming season. It's was a big surprise for me to hear Marty say that Yanish may be in danger of not even making the team.

Thanks so much. Since XM no longer carries WLW and for some reason, I can't get it a night here, this is my only link to that show. A big attaboy for you.

I can remember Marty saying those exact words about Eric Davis.

No, I'm not comparing Chris Dickerson to Eric Davis.

Little injuries? Who is Marty to decide weather any injury is a little injury or if any player should play through that injury?

Kevin Mitchell was one of Marty's favorite players. He missed plenty of games due to injury. Since he was one of his favorites, Marty never said a word about Mitch playing through injuries.

Mocking Marty using quotes from Grampa, sounds like it could be a weekly segment
