LOS ANGELES – Robert Culp, the actor who teamed with Bill Cosby in the racially groundbreaking TV series "I Spy" and was Bob in the critically acclaimed sex comedy "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice," died Wednesday after collapsing outside his Hollywood home, his agent said. Culp was 79.

The star of the Greatest American Hero was William Katt. Culp was the second lead. (And why I know that off the top of my head, I have no idea.)

Culp was usually the culpable guy on crime shows like Columbo.

That was the first show I thought of when I first read that he had died.

Since it all seems to be stars of 60's shows lately...my next pick to go will be Robert Conrad of Wild Wild West.

You'll have to knock the battery off his shoulder first. ;)

When I was 8 years old, I spent what felt like forever in the hospital. The only thing on television during my stay was a marathon of "The Greatest American Hero" starring Robert Culp. Thank you Mr. Culp for keeping me entertained during that time. RIP.

I've seen Culp in all of the roles mentioned in the article, from "I Spy" to "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" to "The Greatest American Hero." He was never an A-list talent, but had a consistent, and consistently entertaining, career. R.I.P.

A few other things about Robert Culp. First, he was a writer; in fact, he wrote the first episode of "I Spy". In a related note, here's a quote I read this morning from the blog of another TV writer:

I picketed with him during WGA strikes and went over and picketed alongside him at some actors' strikes, as well. I remember him hopping up on a truck and hauling big, heavy tubs of water and Gatorade out, then directing traffic and carrying armloads of signs. There were a lot of stars there but not all were willing to do the heavy lifting and physical stuff. Culp was.

Secondly, for some reason, I remember that his onetime wife, actress France Nuyen, was very, very pretty. Still is, as far as I know...

I remember that Outer Limits episode where Culp played the unlucky volunteer to be transformed into a Thetan alien.
