Quit serving up the frickin' gopher balls. Stay off the plate and walk a few more batters. Stop serving high-curveballs to high-curveball hitters, and such. Think, man, think!

Harang needs a good rap upside his head.

When the first time you swing is on an 1-2 pitch, the odds of you striking out are pretty great.

Dickerson should have had that at-bat.

That's too much pressure to put on Stubbs to be asking him to lead off.

Kingspoint
04-27-2010, 08:08 PM
Stubbs should be batting 6th. Cabrera 7th.

Both of these guys belong in the bottom of the order.

If Rick Sweet was Manager, Dickerson would lead off followed by Phillips, Votto, Rolen, Bruce, Stubbs, Janish, Hanigan, Pitcher.........EVERY DAY. Those 8 would get 650 PA's (unless they were injured and Catcher being the exception). Cabrera, Hernandez and Gomes would be pinch-hitters, spot-starters, injury-replacements. Our pitching and defense would be much better and Votto, Rolen, and Bruce would get more chances to knock in runs. We'd then be primed for a real run at a Championship in 2011 knowing what we had with Janish, Stubbs and Dickerson. Harang would also move to the bullpen with Maloney and/or Owings getting his starts. Gomes, Cabrera and Hernandez shouldn't be in the 2011 plans in any way, shape or form (mayb Hernandez).

This is the closest the REDS have been to having a "real" manager since Jack McKeon. Sweet is only one step away.

It's only the lineup that most "knowledgeable" people would use.

There's no chance whatsoever the REDS compete for anything this year. Because of that, you don't waste plate-appearances on players that have no future with the team for 2011. You play the players whom you still have doubts about, so you can see what they have and what they could contribute to the team for 2011. That's why you sit Gomes, Hernandez and Cabrera as much as possible, and play Dickerson, Hanigan, and Janish as much as possible. Anyone with common sense can see that. Major League Baseball scouts have said the exact same thing. You can learn something here from them.

Look man. I'm not trying to start anything. But seriously, that idea is just foolish.

Do I prefer Janish over Cabrera and Hanigan over Hernandez? Yes. But playing them every day while leaving Hernandez and Cabrera on the bench just isn't feasible. Mixing in these veterans does have its advantages.

Each guy has his pros and cons. It is up to the manager to maximize their effectiveness. I think that we saw Hanigan just wasn't capable (yet) of catching full time last year. Dusty is mixing it up this year, not relying on one guy too much, and it looks like he is maximizing Hanigan's production.

Hard to argue between Janish and Cabrera. I am in love with Janish's glove. Cabrera is a statue on defense. But it is hard to justify benching the #1 RBI guy in the lineup. He hits when it counts.

I back up what I say with proof, instead of just "making it up".

From Paul Daugherty yesterday:

Talked at length yesterday, with a National League front-office type, whose opinion was that Baker’s ongoing over-reliance on vets was stunting the Reds’ growth. He wondered why Janish wasnt given the everyday chance to prove himself at SS, wondered why Gomes was playing so much, why Harang is still in the rotation and not Maloney. His take was, the Reds gain nothing by playing Gomes so much, because they know already what Gomes gives them. Which should be a 4th or 5th OF and pinch-hitter. Why not see if Dickerson can play if not every day at least more than he is now. The Reds’ future might not include Dickerson; it definitely won’t feature Gomes.

Alright man. You are right. But Major League scouts aren't Major League managers...

Just sayin' that I agree with Paul Daugherty's "front office connection" that Dusty's doing it wrong by not playing Janish and Dickerson every day since Gomes and Cabera shouldn't be in the team's 2011 plans, and that there's nothing to lose for this season. What's the difference if this team loses 90 games with what Baker's doing now, or 95 games going with Janish, Dickerson and Maloney. And, there's no saying that we don't lose 85 games instead with those three over Cabrera, Gomes and Harang.

I am still of the belief, and only because I'm so outside the situation that I don't know what's going on between Bryan Price and Aaron Harang, that Harang still has 6 more starts to "figure this out" regarding any instruction he may have been given by Price during their time together. Come June, though, I'll give up on Harang if he's not pitching well (quality starts two out of three outings). And, no one on this site has been a more outspoken poster against Harang than I have been for the last year-and-a-half.

I'll agree with you on Harang. Although he is doing his best to prove us wrong tonight. Big K to Berkman there.

But with him, you cannot excuse his poor performance as "it's early." Because it's been going on for 2 years.

With the team, however, it's early. You never know what the outcome of a season is going to be, and if you want to give up on this season already, then that is where you and I differ.

I feel that this team can compete this year, so stick with the mix of youth and vets.

Don't get me wrong. I would love nothing more than for Dickerson, Stubbs, Hanigan, Janish, et al to come into their own and be productive major league starters, given their youth and potential for years to come. But as of right now, I think Dusty is doing the right thing by keeping some of the weight on vets. It minimalizes a total crash-and-burn. These guys, Hernandez and Cabrera, have proven themselves and wouldn't be employed right now if they were worthless.

I'll agree with you on Harang. Although he is doing his best to prove us wrong tonight. Big K to Berkman there.

With the team, however, it's early. You never know what the outcome of a season is going to be, and if you want to give up on this season already, then that is where you and I differ.

Or Harang is proving us "right", that his head hasn't been on straight, and it's not been his stuff (as Bryan himself has said, and others, including Aaron).

While I was saying you could "reasonably" conclude that 2010 will be a season of 90 losses based on the way the team has played, I, too, would like to see this team try to win. I think you have to get a winning attitude going in a clubhouse. You can't assume you can go from 90+ losses one season to 90+ wins the next just because some of the players are a year older, and a couple players get added. You've got to get to 80+ wins before you get to 90+ wins. I'd still, though like to see Dickerson and Stubbs get as many, if not more at-bats than Gomes, and I'd like to see Janish and Stubbs get as many, if not more at-bats than Cabrera and Hernandez. Of course, none of that will happen. It's just a wish.

This has got to be uncomfortable for Aaron Harang to pitch with a lead, seeing as how he has won only one game since last Memorial Day.

He's going to have to give up the long ball here just so he can feel "normal".

Kingspoint
04-27-2010, 09:19 PM
315' down the left field line and 326' down the right field line?!

That's shorter than a lot of High School fields, if not most.

Who, here on the REDS, pulls the ball?

Kingspoint

6 baserunners in 3.2 for Harang already. That's a monstrous WHIP. Hope he settles down. Though, I'd rather see more walks and hit-batters from him. I just don't want to see the Doubles, Triples and Homeruns (with runners on base) that he loves to give up.
