Instead of following Gomes' AB on gameday, I watched the highlight of is HR yesterday.

Reds

Man Gomes almost got hit by the throw back in then he almost got nabbed by Fielder. o-cab needs a big hit here.

venicereds
05-18-2010, 01:41 PM
Gomes guilty of lack of hustle there. I love him as a player, but he may be reading too much of his own press. He could have had 2nd easy, but he inexplicably walked/jogged down the 1st base line.

Reds
05-18-2010, 01:43 PM
thats what brew tv said. i didn't see it like that. he got jammed, got a bad jump out of the box and knew he'd get gunned at 2nd.

venicereds
05-18-2010, 01:49 PM
Maybe he couldn't have made it to 2nd, but he definitely could have gotten out of the box quicker. His 1st 3 or 4 steps were at a walk.

Heisey walks on four pitches nowhere near the plate (after a called strike one) and Brandon swings at a first pitch out of the strike zone. Still it took a nice play by the Brewer's third baseman.

Dusty just threw in the towel on this game. From the lineup he ran out there to the pitchers he's throwing out there. Was this not a 1-run game to start the inning?

Herrera had great numbers against Fielder, so after seeing that I understood he was playing a matchup. Damn it. Bailey gives us 7 innings and we need three guys (at least) to get through the eighth.

With our powerful 5 hole hitter. WTH did Dusty take him out of the leadoff spot. Unbelieveable.

You know Dusty NEEDS that veteran crustiness in the five hole.
You have a lineup that is working and you just blow it all up.
And a chance to get the CF back in the leadoff spot....well that was too much for Dusty to resist.

RedsFanInBama
05-18-2010, 03:25 PM
You can't tell me Dusty was serious about winning this game with the lineup he ran out there or with the pitchers he sent to the mound in the 8th inning of a close game.

Yep, I haven't found a lot to complain about with Dusty lately, but there wasn't any real reason to tinker with or change the lineup. I figured Rolen would be off today, and I'd rather have Janish than Cairo in the game, but other than that it should have stayed the same.

Bruce continues to hit, at least.

Again, I was expecting Rolen to sit today with a day game after a night game. I don't know that I necessarily agree with it, but I do see the logic in resting a guy in his mid 30's with a bad back and no viable replacement on the big league roster if he goes on the DL. Dusty wanted to do it Sunday, but thought the Cardinals series was too big. He may have made the mistake of assuming he could just run whoever out there and win. But then again, if Rolen comes up sore or back spasming and goes on the DL, you know people would have been on Dusty for playing him too.

I could have driven in Heisey myself off of what Hoffman was dealing up there. I agree with the sentiment demonstrated on this thread: excited for the Reds victory, but tough to watch one of the greatest relievers of all time struggle like this. That's his 6th blown save and he flat-out serving up pitches on a platter. Time for him to retire and enjoy life - that could not have been enjoyable for him today. And you gotta wonder what his teammates are thinking...

Thats always been my guess. And what has always bothered me is that on day games like this, they still block out the other teams broadcast on Directv's baseball package. FSN has an agreement to be the Reds' sole provider of games to this region unless it is a national game like Fox or ESPN. Its not so bad anymore but before last year when they were still only showing 100 or so games, the baseball package would have been worth it to get the other 60 games but FSN wouldnt allow it.
