If he goes six innings and only gives up three runs, I would consider his debut a huge success. Micah Owings gets into a game today.

2 run homer by Hunter Pence gives the Astros a 1-0 lead.

How's that math work, exactly?

I'm not making any long term projections based off 2 innings of work, but I agree with Brantley that he has a good working knowledge of what he does well and what he perhaps can't do. Seems like another young man who knows how to pitch, at first glance.

Doesn't seem to have the stuff to miss many bats. Looks a lot like a AAAA pitcher to me.

He may be able to get out of damage here. But, nothing he throws strikes me as anything that will enable him to consistantly get out MLB hitters.

It sounds wierd saying it, but Cairo sure has some "professional" at bats lately making the pitchers throw a lot of pitches.

I don't think he's a big misser of bats either. But if you hit your spots and locate well, you've always got a chance to get MLB hitters out. Not every out needs to be a strikeout.

Although I'm not saying he's a big part of our future. Right now, I just want to see him do well tonight and in his next start.

God I love this team!

It's so nice seeing the rewards come through from O'Brien and Krivsky. Those two were very patient with completely rebuilding from scratch the entire organization.

With Walt keeping the prospects in tact and not going crazy trying to dump all of the work that was done by his predecessors, the REDS are reaping the rewards right now. Walt just had to tweak a couple of things and leave the rest alone. His replacement of EE with Rolen was solid, while he grabbed the best SS (even if he is old) available in Free Agency last year. Adding Chapman and drafting Leake were huge moves.

What's great about watching all of this, is that Jockety has shown the willingness to be patient with his "prospects" and has handled them appropriately throughout the organization. I didn't think he had it in him when he got here because he was so used to winning by buying the hottest free agent on the market every year in St. Louis. Here, he had to do it through patience and minor tweaks, picking very carefully where the money was spent.

Amazing.

His OPS is 66 points higher right now than what he ended up with last season (and 72 points higher than the year before). He's improving. And, he just turned 23 eight weeks ago.

I think he'll be alright at some point, but it seems like every time Drew seems to take a step up at the plate one night, he's striking out like crazy the next one.

Although the umpire gave Chacin a "mercy strike". That 3-0 pitch was borderline as to whether or not it hit the outside corner, and it was about shoulder high.

Can you say, "Rookie"?

Next year he'll have his "Sophomore Slump". Or, maybe that's this year.

Anyways, he has to go through these ups and downs, just like Bruce. Bruce has fewer downs now.

Next year, Stubbs will have fewer downs.

No, I can't say rookie, because Stubbs had 180 AB's last year.;)

There have always been questions on how he would hit at the major league level... a lot more questions than there were with Bruce.

I do think he has the talent to do so though.

I guess I have to complain or nitpick on something as a long time Reds fan.;)

Once again Keels is just horrid. I like him ok on Ohio State broadcasts, and he has a great voice. But tonight he's lost track of game on 3 occasions.

"2 run home run by Hunter Pence has given the Astros a 1-0 lead".

"3-1 is how the inning ends (then catching himself as to the actual score of the game) with the total score being 5-2."

"Reds go out 1-2-3 in the first", when of course it was the bottom of the 5th.

05-28-2010, 10:24 PM
It might be for the best, considering that Lincoln's FB tops out at 88 MPH these days, but it seems to me that Toothpick has done his level best to expose him, pitching him multiple innings in the Atlanta disaster and then again tonight (47 pitches).

I thought Owings was the designated long reliever.

All that said, I'd like to see Del Rosario replace him (Lincoln).

Reds
05-28-2010, 10:24 PM

Maybe Masset needs to be the long man for a while and give Owings a chance to setup. But Dusty likes his bat and he cant pinch hit him early in a game if he is going to be a setup guy.
