More and more over the last few weeks my wife and I have been watching movies/shows from the Netflix instant streaming catalog. A lot of times we try to find a movie or show that we probably wouldn't have watched other wise. Sometimes it's a little hard to find something good sifting through a lot of the not so good movies.

I figured we could use this thread in a similar way we use the "Most recent movie I've watched" thread but with just Netflix instant streaming selections.

If the mods feel it's redundant then that's fine, we can use the other thread.

For a well known movie I suggest watching/re-watching Stepbrothers. A lot of people didn't like this one, but I think it's one the best Will Ferrell movies or maybe just the most quotable.

For a not so well known movie, we watched Primer last night. It's an interesting take on time travel. My wife didn't make it to the end, but I liked it. I had to rewind it a couple times to wrap my head around everything though.

I'd like to know how many times I've watched all or part of The Big Lebowski via netflix streaming.

- All 3 seasons of Arrested Development
- They also just added v. 1, 2, and 3 of Beavis and Butthead The Mike Judge Collection.
- Both Trailer Park Boys movies

I hope eventually they add the Trailer Park Boys series to the instant streaming catalog.

I've been going back through the Chappelle Show over the last few days. Bicycle..........Monkey.........Ashy Larry......

"Coupling" is a great British sit-com. Kinda like their "Friends" but much edgier, sexier (PG-13 still) and much funnier. They tried an American version, but it was terrible.

If you liked Faulty Towers, and the British "Office", you'll love "Coupling". Just make sure to watch the British one.

Some good medical Marijuana doc's out there as well....some really good ones of America being addicted to oil also....I spent a whole weekend laid up after back surgery just watching nothing but Doc's.

I just finished up with "The Seeds of Death" (never really saw much of the 2nd Doctor growing up -- it was always the episodes in color with 3-7). Next up for me is "The Mind Robber" (another 2nd Doc episode) and then "Spearhead from Space" (3rd Doctor, Jon Pertwee, first episode).

I hope they keep upping more stuff on there. It's been fun revisiting these shows from when I was a kid. I'd really like to see more 5th Doctor stuff up there too.

If you've seen "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and wanted to throw up, then you I highly recommend watching the television series start to finish on Netflix. For a children's show, it's extremely impressive. The plot lines are great and character development is just as good. If you've got a good 24 hours to spare, I suggest curling up and watching it. :)

I'm actually doing just that on the reccommendation of a few friends -- I'm about 15 or so episodes into the first season, and I'm kinda hooked. The characters make a lot more sense in the show than they do in the movie. On the whole, it reminds me a lot of the old "Batman" cartoons I watched when I was younger -- clearly kids stuff, but it handles itself maturely enough to be enjoyable to those of us who are a tad out of the target demographic.

Incidentally, this is where Netflix Instant really shines: I'm watching and enjoying a show I'd otherwise never have taken the time to actually seek out and purchase.

Got my setup disk for the Wii yesterday and was tinkering with it last night trying to figure it all out as far as adding movies to my Instant Queue. When it first started up on my TV it asked me to add movies to the IQ, and when I used the Wii to view the list of genres it was somewhat limited. But I realized I can go to their website and add a lot more movies to it.

I'm assuming that the movie has to have the "play" option listed at the bottom for it to be added to the IQ? If it just says "add", then that is for the other queue you keep filled, and from where they ship you DVDs?

I watched a really old classic Universal horror movie last night that I haven't seen since I was a kid - The Werewolf of London (1935). The streaming quality was great.

They also sent me my first DVD in the mail. Now once I put that back in the mail to return it, how long is the turnaround for me to get the next DVD?

My turn around time in Cincinnati averages around two days. It is unbelievably fast.

It is amazing and I've concluded that the postal service must do a scan of the bar code upon receipt somewhere in their system. We routinely send them to either Louisville or Indy (usually Louisville) and they're emailing me bright and early the next morning that it's been received.

The reason I've come to the conclusion about the USPS doing some part in this is that we recently mailed one back from Chicago on the 5th (the holiday) and like clockwork, the next morning it was noted as received, even though it was going about 300 miles instead of the usual 125 miles from here.

And the streaming is a great addition. These guys have absolutely hammered Blockbuster, IMO.

Of course, I shouldn't drag this too far afield.

Baseball fans want a fun, corny show to watch? I watched an episode or two of Home Run Derby, a late 50's, early 60's show featuring power hitters of the day in a home run derby competition. Now looking at their list, none show as Play It Now, but I know I watched one. Maybe it's such that once you watch a couple, it's removed from the Instant status, although I'm not sure why that would be.

They routinely cycle things in and out of the streaming library. If you look at your instant queue you will probably see some that say "Available until 7/21/2010" or something along those lines.

Your best bet is to build your queue on the Web site. It just works a lot faster.

Movies that have a blue "Play" button can be added to the instant queue (IQ). On the Web site, hold your mouse cursor over the button to reveal the "Add to Instant Queue" option. Click that option to add the movie.

If the movie just has a red "Add" button, it's not available for streaming yet. You can add it to your dvd queue. If it is in your dvd queue and becomes available for streaming, a blue "Play" button will appear next to it.

When I'm home at lunch, I'll grab a TV episode. Today I watched the first episode of the George Burns & Gracie Allen Show from 1950. Burns & Allen were well established stars at this point. What always struck me about this show is they crossed the line between the show and its characters and real life, the actual performance. It starts with Burns coming on stage at the side and talking to the audience, a nice little monologue about comedy itself. He then shows the set of the living room, part of the house facade and their neighbor's house.

This is interspersed with the story played out on that set. It fades to black and moves to the set and then back again at different times. This is similar to what Gary Shandling did on his show some thirty years later. Part way through they have their jazz quintet do a neighbor and intersperse a gag scene with Burns. There are some other gags that incorporate this split between the set and the actual stage too.

You'll recognize some of the actors. The woman who played their neighbor Blanche is the voice of Betty Rubble on The Flintstones and the traveling salesman is character actor Henry Jones, fairly young then, but you'll recognize him from any number of shows.

The irony of George Burns characters is that one running joke was how old he was. On one radio episode I heard on WVXU, some scientists did an experiment on him and said he'd live to be 100 - which of course he did.

The other feature of this episode, not uncommon then, is that the commercial sponsor is integrated directly into the show.

Sorry for the lengthy review, but it's fairly interesting to me and some great comedic talent that's fun to watch.

I follow the RSS feed at the link below, which lists every addition to Netflix Instant Viewing.

http://rss.netflix.com/NewWatchInstantlyRSS

The way I prefer to follow it is by email, using http://www.feedmyinbox.com/. It can also be viewed in My Yahoo or your RSS viewer of choice.

I've been following it for almost a year with this method. Generally anywhere from 10-30 titles get added per week. It seems like more additions happen at the beginning of the month than the end of the month. Beyond that, there isn't any rhyme or reason to when things get added.

Also, FWIW, sometimes movies and shows will appear on the web site as much as a week before they appear in this feed. It isn't necessarily the fastest way to be informed, but it will insure that you don't miss out on something that you want to see when it gets added.

Gamefly, a service which provides games by mail was threatening to sue the Postal Service last year over the preferential treatment those two were receiving.

http://www.dailytech.com/GameFly+Accuses+USPS+of+Breaking+Discs+Favoring+Ne tflix+Blockbuster/article14969.htm

Video game rental service GameFly and the United States Postal Service (USPS) could be headed to court over accusations that USPS breaks thousands of game discs each year, and offers preferential treatment to Netflix and Blockbuster.

<snip>

The video game rental service filed an official complaint with the Postal Regulatory Commission, accusing USPS of discriminating against the company.

As Unassisted said, there is no doubt. When you are hemorrhaging money like the USPS, you tend to scratch the back of those who give you the most business. Netflix is an unbelievable boon to the postal service that requires very little work on their part. In an era when first class mail is nearly dead, Netflix represents a substantial revenue stream.

I didn't know they had a streaming only plan. Hmmm. But we're on the the minimum plan for $9 where we only get one DVD at a time and that's fine with us because I did see a lot of old movies that aren't currently available for steaming that I want to watch.

My only problem is that the boys keep pushing my movies down in the queue with their requests, so I'll probably never get to watch them. I'm gonna have to do some threatening! LOL

Went down to one of the lesser packages but my family doesn't even know it because we still get all the channels we love to watch. There so much garbage on there. I did ask them about that Whole House DVR option they now offer where, if you have an HD DVR, you can record and watch programs on any TV in the house. It's only $3/month. Of course you have to have HD receivers in the other rooms where I only have one and standard in the kids. So it would only work between the two receivers. Then I found out it would cost about $160 to set it up and do some various upgrades, so I said No Thanks.

One of the secrets to Netflix's success is that they have hundred of hubs across the country. They rent out or own small one room offices near post offices that just have a few guys with computers who do nothing but receive the disks (or bar scans) and then tell the closest distribution site to send out the next one on your queue.

I didn't know they had a streaming only plan. Hmmm. But we're on the the minimum plan for $9 where we only get one DVD at a time and that's fine with us because I did see a lot of old movies that aren't currently available for steaming that I want to watch.

The "Streaming Only" plans are pretty lame. For $5 per month, you can stream up to 2 hours of video *per month* only on your computer, not on a Wii or PS3. The other plan costs $8 per month, and only allows you to stream "StarzPlay" movies, which is a very limited selection.

The $9 per month plan is the best deal, by far.

Man, we're really liking it Johnny. The kids are streaming movies like crazy. I'm seriously considering buying another streaming device for my bedroom. I'd appreciate any advice on what to possibly get? I can't afford to spend a lot, and I'm looking at a Roku, which they say runs around $80.

We have two different TV's. The one in the living room is an older, non-digital TV, so we'd need a device for that. The one in our room is new and has a hook-up for plugging my computer in. Not sure which plugs I need for that. Has anyone else used a cable to plug the computer into the TV. Would that also work for MLB.tv too?

I used to do do that before netflix started streaming to the PS3. Most laptops have an HDMI port, that's what I used and it worked great. And yes it also works for mlb.tv.

My brother in law uses it for Netflix. He says it works well.

But you might want to take a look at the Western Digital WD TV Live Plus HD media player (http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Media-Player-WDBABX0000NBK-NESN/dp/B003MVZ60I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1279625205&sr=8-1) as well. I ordered mine the first day it became available, and based on my order number, I was one of the first 1000 people to own a Roku box. :D

It's great. One of the simplest pieces of A/V gear I've ever seen to set up and use. The company keeps adding features, so it now connects to a lot more things than it did when I bought it.

The info on this page is correct. It does seem to be buried on their site.

My son has a practically new XBox360 that he had gotten a few months ago and yet barely uses. He wanted to sell it ($100) and get a new PS3. I just bought a wireless adapter for it so I can use it in my bedroom to stream Netflix.

There is a 360 specific adapter because the older 360s don't have built-in WiFi. It plugs into the network port on the back of the console. Other than that it is straight forward wireless networking.

I got my wireless adapter off of Ebay for $35. If you have a wireless router in your home it will detect the system.

BUT.... there's a catch with XBox if you want to stream Netflix, which I didn't know about. You have to have a XBOX Live Gold membership in order to do so. You can purchase those on Amazon for around $35-$40 for a 12 month subscription.

Now IMO, unless of course you're a gamer who likes to play games on-line also, why pay for something when it's available for free (referring to the Netflix streaming). I stream for free thru the Wii and PS3, but with XBox you have to pay extra???. NOT!

I went ahead and bought a Roku for $70 for in the bedroom. It's easy to set-up and use, and there is no extra fees to stream Netflix. Just the one-time charge to purchase the box.

So if anyone is interested in buying a practically new Xbox360 w/ the wireless adapter - I also have an external extra hard 20 GB hard drive, then PM me. I'll make you a good deal. ;)

My dad was watching some old dean martin/jerry lewis tv shows from c 1950. he said they were terrible. He's watching Jack Benny and Red Skelton now.

He recently watched "You Can't Take it With You" from 1938. Said that was one of the first movies he saw as a kid. Said it was great. I'll have to watch it sometime.

We have 90 movies in our instant queue, and hardly use the DVDs, but it's nice to get a new movie every now and then.

You can request a movie before it's released, and it will go into you queue when the release date gets close. Got one or two movies in my mailbox the day they were released.

Looking for something to watch last night, I stumbled upon Under Suspicion (2000), a suspense/crime drama starring Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman. Monica Bellucci is also in the film. Despite the big names, I don't remember this in the theaters.

It's a remake of a French film from the 70s, and has an independent/artsy feel. Honestly, it was the actors that drew me to the film and they didn't disappoint. It's dialogue driven and a little creepy at times. If you like Freeman and Hackman, it's worth it, though.

The best part for me was that MWM's favorite actor Daniel Von Bargen had a small role in it as the sheriff. There was one scene that was screaming for the line "not too worried about it", but unfortunately it didn't come.

Yep. That's how I do it.

I have a HD Roku, so I'm not sure if it's available if using the PS3 or Wii, but there is a channel called "The Channel Store" where you can go in and add channels. Many are free, and some have a minimal subscription cost.

For $3/year (had to use Paypal) I added two neat channels.... Drive-In Theater, which shows all those old sci-fi/horror movies from the 40s, 50s, 60s (my son loves these).... and Moonlight Movies, which are older, and rare, B movies and specials from the 30's to the 70s.

I love it so much that I bought a second one- Roku XD. That way the Wii wasn't always tied up to the one TV, and in case the teens wanted it. But they are very simple to hook-up and use. I highly recommend them. And they are rather inexpensive....

When I got ours I immediately dropped what movie channels we had with Directv. The money you save there will easily pay for the Roku in a few months alone.

And Netflix is starting to expand better where you can get new releases sooner.

They have a Huluplus one can subscribe to for around $8/month, and one can stream it, like Netflix, through your internet-ready device to your TV, but I really don't know if it's worth it or not. I don't know if it gets all the same programming, expanded catalog, that one can get with the regular Hulu.

I understand you're interested in the streaming content, but almost uniformly, the DVD's arrive the day after they're sent. They get back to Netflix almost always within a day of being sent, so you usually only have a two day lag between selections arriving. It's a remarkable system. Once in a blue moon, it will take an extra day, but very rarely.

Movies come and go from instant streaming. I am pretty sure I watched at least one, if not two IJ movies via streaming 6 months back.

I often have 80+ movies in my queue, so if you find something you like, stash it in your queue and get to it later. Google for netflix rss feeds and sign up for one showing new additions to instant streaming.

Instant streaming, IMO, is best used for TV series. They strip out the commercials and a good part of the opening theme. You just get straight up TV. Find a series or two that you missed that sounds interesting and queue a few of them. I have watched most of Firefly, Family Guy, Arrested Development, Spartacus, and some others via instant streaming.

Good luck.

Bingo!

I had a heck of a time convincing my wife - she's a real hard head - as she was on the TV, browsing thru the various genres on Netflix, that they were showing you all the movies available, like say in the Sci-Fi section, for instant streaming. You can go on-line and search, and find lots more, which you then can add to your instant queue.

My wife and I are not ones who have the habit of regularly watching series TV, or even any reality shows for that matter. I can honestly say I've never seen any of the myriad of crime drama shows from CSI to Criminal Minds, etc, etc. My wife does like to watch CourtTV and some of the various crime investigative reporting shows in that ilk.

But a co-worker has convinced me that my wife and I would love Dexter, so I've went to Netflix and added the first two seasons to my instant queue, so I'm going to give it a shot. At least this way we can watch it on the weekends at our convenience.

Season 1 of Dexter is amazing. Season 2 is not as good, but Season 3 again rises to a very high level.

So am I. On part 5 right now. Great stuff. Can't wait to watch more Burns documentaries.

Also watching Archer. Hilarious.

Netflix is awesome.

Question. I just got a 2nd PS3 for my basement. Can I use the same account for that one when I set it up?

The Blockbuster down the street is closing down and I'm sure others will be soon as well. They are selling everything. I bought a bunch of blu-ray's for $5 each. Netflix is killing it.

You will need to activate the new PS3 separately just like the first one, but you can have multiple streaming devices associated with your account at the same time. At one point I was using a Mac, PS3, 360 and Wii to stream.

First: Archer is awesome.

Second: Yes. I have a netflix account my brother in college does not but he uses mine. You can watch instant streaming on two devices simultaneously.

I found out that the limit is two one Saturday afternoon when I attempted to watch a show on the PS3 in the living room and I received an error that two programs were already being viewed on my account. My son was in his room watching Blue's Clues on the computer, I called my brother and sure enough he was watching some movie in his dorm room.

I really am a good brother. He gets free mlb.tv and netflix from me.

"The Sting" .

For fun, here is a review I found for "The Sting II"

You'll forget all about Newman and Redford once this picture starts and you see Gleason and Davis take over the characters. I think if it weren't for the original this might have swept the Academy Awards, including a very deserved Oscar for Teri Garr. Gleason is the definitive Gondorff! Davis, hot off his success in "North Dallas Forty" charms his way through another great performance as Hooker. With Oliver Reed and Karl Malden one wonders if we'll ever see such caliber of actors in the same room again, let alone the same film. Wow! Sorry, none of this is true...this is a Sting...too.

Yep. I got the same email, and changed my plan to unlimited streaming only for $7.99/month. You jerk my rates up like that and I will counter in some form or fashion.

I'm actually going to go with two DVDs at a time when the rates hike. My wife and I use the streaming primarily to watch old TV series more than anything else, and it seems like less and less choices are available on the streaming than just a few months ago. When we run out of series to watch, we may switch back to just the streaming.

Supposedly the Netflix CEO's ulterior motive with the rate hike was to move subscribers away from DVDs, so the company could reduce its single largest expense, postage. According to this thread, it's working. ;)

It could get uglier if the worst-case scenarios play out. Netflix suffered another setback earlier this month when Starz Entertainment ended talks to renew the licensing rights to a key part of Netflix's video library for streaming over the Internet. The fallout from that decision will hit in March when Netflix will no longer be able to stream the popular mix of recently released movies and TV shows that it got from Starz, raising the specter of another onslaught of customer defections.

Raising prices while providing less content? Not a good formula.

Netflix is taking a HUGE hit over this price increase. Down 600,000 customers.

We dropped Netflix and purchased Amazon Prime. They have really good options at a much lower annual price than Netflix, and of course there are other benefits to membership. I highly recommend anyone who is interested give their one month free trial a shot.

I get Amazon through my Roku, and have looked into it. AP's current subscription is $79/year, but it's movie selection (approximately 6,000) is far inferior to Netflix, Hulus, and several others at this current time, though there could now be a push to vastly improve it.

I see where Netflix's CEO Sunday apologized to it's membership for the drastic price hike. He also announced they are also separating the DVD mailing system from their direct streaming, adding video games, and going to call it Qwikster.

They are really making some bad decisions at Netflix. They apologize for the price hike.... but don't change it. Therefore the apology was BS. Then they split the company into 2 services. No one asked for that. Now I have to deal with 2 companies when I only wanted to deal with 1.

This whole situation has been handled beyond poorly. They've gone from a pricing model that made sense and was popular to a complex method of pricing involving two separate entities. I don't understand it at all, and as a Netflix subscriber, I'm left wondering what is happening -- will my account now be streaming only and require me to separately sign up for this new service if I want to receive DVDs?

If I'm holding a Netflix DVD, do I just get to keep that now, or am I automatically enrolled in the new service until I send it back?

This will be a case study in poor management for years to come.

BTW, here's the full text of their "apology" e-mail, for those who cancelled the service and no longer get such things -- you'll of course note that the explanation given in no way attempts to show why a price increase was needed (added cost of making streaming movies available, postage increases, etc.):

I messed up. I owe you an explanation.

It is clear from the feedback over the past two months that many members felt we lacked respect and humility in the way we announced the separation of DVD and streaming and the price changes. That was certainly not our intent, and I offer my sincere apology. Let me explain what we are doing.

For the past five years, my greatest fear at Netflix has been that we wouldn't make the leap from success in DVDs to success in streaming. Most companies that are great at something – like AOL dialup or Borders bookstores – do not become great at new things people want (streaming for us). So we moved quickly into streaming, but I should have personally given you a full explanation of why we are splitting the services and thereby increasing prices. It wouldn’t have changed the price increase, but it would have been the right thing to do.

So here is what we are doing and why.

Many members love our DVD service, as I do, because nearly every movie ever made is published on DVD. DVD is a great option for those who want the huge and comprehensive selection of movies.

I also love our streaming service because it is integrated into my TV, and I can watch anytime I want. The benefits of our streaming service are really quite different from the benefits of DVD by mail. We need to focus on rapid improvement as streaming technology and the market evolves, without maintaining compatibility with our DVD by mail service.

So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are really becoming two different businesses, with very different cost structures, that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently.

It’s hard to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with pride, but we think it is necessary: In a few weeks, we will rename our DVD by mail service to “Qwikster”. We chose the name Qwikster because it refers to quick delivery. We will keep the name “Netflix” for streaming.

Qwikster will be the same website and DVD service that everyone is used to. It is just a new name, and DVD members will go to qwikster.com to access their DVD queues and choose movies. One improvement we will make at launch is to add a video games upgrade option, similar to our upgrade option for Blu-ray, for those who want to rent Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 games. Members have been asking for video games for many years, but now that DVD by mail has its own team, we are finally getting it done. Other improvements will follow. A negative of the renaming and separation is that the Qwikster.com and Netflix.com websites will not be integrated.

There are no pricing changes (we’re done with that!). If you subscribe to both services you will have two entries on your credit card statement, one for Qwikster and one for Netflix. The total will be the same as your current charges. We will let you know in a few weeks when the Qwikster.com website is up and ready.

For me the Netflix red envelope has always been a source of joy. The new envelope is still that lovely red, but now it will have a Qwikster logo. I know that logo will grow on me over time, but still, it is hard. I imagine it will be similar for many of you.

I want to acknowledge and thank you for sticking with us, and to apologize again to those members, both current and former, who felt we treated them thoughtlessly.

Both the Qwikster and Netflix teams will work hard to regain your trust. We know it will not be overnight. Actions speak louder than words. But words help people to understand actions.

Respectfully yours,

-Reed Hastings, Co-Founder and CEO, Netflix

p.s. I have a slightly longer explanation along with a video posted on our blog, where you can also post comments.

I saw that email this AM. When I saw it was from the Netflix CEO and the subject of it, I thought "well, maybe they've come to their senses".

And then I read the email and thought "that's the most moronic apology I've ever heard of" and doesn't address a thing about why their customers are ticked off and leaving.

I think I'm going to cancel just because they are total idiots and obviously don't have a clue. They must have gone to the "New Coke" School of Fouled Up Marketing.

I've heard that splitting the services might result in more videos available for streaming in the future. If that is true, it might eventually work out for the best. The movie industry seems to be trying to keep the dvd market afloat by limiting what can be made available for streaming. As more devices with streaming capabilities come to market, propping up the dvd market to the detriment of streaming may prove difficult. Not to say that dvds will go away. People still love to own them. But dvds as a rental medium may fade.

I think cable faces the biggest threat from streaming. Why subscribe to a premium movie channel when streaming services provide the same content in a more convenient manner?

I agree, DVD's will eventually be on the way out as a standard, but why do this now, before they have even close to enough titles to make it possible to have one without the other? None of the HBO content is available streaming, nor are a ton of films. Basically I see this as a fine move a year or so from now when streaming content has moved forward and indeed started to make it possible to do without the disc service.

I've basically resigned myself to doing away with one or the other, and now I guess I have to choose. I love the convenience of the streaming, but I like the selection of DVD's...Crap. I've got much more important stuff to decide than this.

They definitely are making a big push over the next year as exclusive agreements with Netflix expire. The two biggest carrots for me were every episode of every Star Trek and Dr. Who series. Amazon in general is stronger with the tv series I like, which is most of what I use the streaming for. I'm lucky in that the Cincinnati library system has virtually any movie I'd like to watch on DVD, so the lack of movies isn't a big deal to me.

I also benefit greatly from the free two day shipping which has a lot to do with my decision to go with Prime. My wife and I both use Amazon to order books and recordings that we simply can't find in local stores. I certainly agree that other providers have more quantity of titles.

Not if they can't renew their agreement with Starz Entertainment, and it ain't looking good, which supplies a key part of their library.

While I agree that DVDs for sale isn't going away any time soon because people like to own (though I do think that market is dwindling), IMO, the future is in instant streaming right into your home. It's way too convenient and easy. Now whether that will be a monthly/yearly subscription fee or simply paying per movie viewed is yet to be determined. I think video rental stores will become obsolete at some point.

And another factor is that with the technology today a lot of people will rent a movie first to see if it's good or not, and avoid paying out $20 to buy a bad movie. And if so, they're burning copies of those movies they decide to add to their library.

I agree. I don't subscribe to any of the premium cable movie channels (HBO, TMC, etc), and it was because of services like Netflix, Hulu, and a few others, where I could search, pick and choose, what I wanted to watch. I pay a monthly fee for Netflix, but the others are free, unless you subscribe to their "premium" service which I haven't found necessary to do.

I read one reasoning for this Netflix Qikster split that made sense. Basically what it claimed is that the content owners were holding the streaming content licensing hostage to the physical media content and vice versa. They were trying to get the content licensed at the total number of Netflix subscribers and not just the number of streaming users.

By splitting the DVD mailing service away from the Streaming only service it will weed out users and then make licensing easier for both companies. This is the only thing that makes sense to me. The CEO of Netflix has made it quite clear that he wants to get away from the mailing service and that he thinks streaming is the future. I think he is right, but I also think he is a little bit ahead of the curve. The content owners are scared of streaming their content, but have no qualms over putting the discs in a vending machine and letting anyone with a credit card take them home for use. I guess they don't realize it's much easier to pirate the physical media that is using a 15 year old encryption method that can't be changed due to backwards compatibility.

Perhaps a bit off topic, but I'm trying to figure out how this Redbox thing is going to play out. 1 dollar a night for a brand new release. Yet it would be cheaper for all involved to stream that movie for 1 dollar for a 24 hour period of time. Will Redbox single-handedly keep DVDs on life-support?

I've been reading speculation in the technology press that Amazon is looking to buy Netflix, but they don't want the disc rental business. If a deal is indeed imminent, that would explain why it was spun off into a separate company. The Netflix CEO was asked about these rumors in an interview and gave an answer that completely ignored the question.

Just found the first season to my very favorite cartoon when I was a kid. Star Blazers is now on Netflix streaming.

They have it broken up in movie length sections instead of each episode so you don't get the 10 minutes of recap at the beginning of each episode. I like that, but man I don't remember it being this cheesey when I was a kid. :)

I'm a big Star Blazers fan too. I've been watching other anime shows on netflix and noticed quite a few joking references to the show, usually a reference to the Japanese title Space Battleship Yamato and some sort of wave motion gun effect. There's a whole episode of the show Excel Saga spoofing it.

My dad is a huge boxing fan, and he passed some of that on to me as I was growing up. We got to watch this doc together a couple of weeks ago, and that was pretty special.

I knew a fair amount about Jack Johnson beforehand, but this documentary covered a ton of details I wasn't aware of, and the restored fight footage was amazing, especially the details of Jack Johnson's face as he smiled at and jawed with his opponents during the fights.
