I think the Reds should go ahead and meet the demands to sign Cisco first. His draft pick is not protected. Grandal is a protected pick so if cant sign him then get the first round pick in 2011. The Reds should be able to still sign Grandal after paying Cisco as well.

I wouldn't be against this. Reds will be picking in the mid Twenties for the first time outside of a decade and having a second pick earlier in the 1st round wouldn't be a bad thing. But since the pick HAS to be signed, do they get a lesser talent than Grandal with that pick? Food for thought.

I'm predicting that IF they get it done tonight it will be done before the game is over and announced either in the latter 1/3 of the game of on the post game. You can take it to the bank (unless of course, I'm wrong). :D

From Fay this morning:

Miller says the club is also working on a deal with sixth-round pick Drew Cisco. Cisco, a high school right-hander, is the grandson of Galen Cisco.

Im hopeful with him, Miller said.

That would put it at the high end of what I guessed (http://www.redszone.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2195367&postcount=223) he would sign for (I said between $750K & $1M). Lets see how I fare on Grandal.

Former Wando High School pitcher Drew Cisco signed with the Cincinnati Reds today, just hours ahead of the midnight deadline drafted players had to sign with Major League Baseball teams.

Cisco, a 6-1, 190-pound right-hander, signed for $975,000.

Like I had posted earlier. He was asking for 1.2 Mil the Reds were offering 650K. Sounds like they met in the middle and kept it under the 1 Mil mark. That being said, 3 excellent HS arms (all starters) taken 6th, 7th and 8th rounds and got them all signed. Excellent work.

He has outstanding control and for the most part has 2 good pitches. Hes not stud pitching prospect but hes still a pretty good shot at being a mid to back end rotation pitcher because of his ability to throw everything where he wants it.

He was a 3rd round talent that the Reds got in the 6th. I think thats what most people are happy about.

Not a great prospect but still very good with a lot of very solid tools.

Agreed. I think he will be a fast mover though the system. If his stuff is as advertised he could be in AA by the end of 2012.

Getting HS guys to sign after the 5th round is tough. You can really get some 1st round value in those guys. The Reds IMO, have excelled in this and found some success in these guys in recent drafts so far.

Good command and movement on all of his pitches.

From what I'm hearing it sounds like he will be of the Mike Leake mold.

The Cards board has comfirmed the Swagerty signing. Someone with "inside knowledge" says Cox has alreagy agreed to a deal, but it doesn't sound that certain.

Reds sign first-round Draft pick Yasmani Grandal
August 17, 2010 – The Cincinnati Reds and first-round draft pick C Yasmani Grandal have agreed to terms on a 4-year Major League contract through the 2013 season.
The Reds selected Grandal (6-2, 210) out of the University of Miami (FL) with the 12th overall pick of June's first-year player draft. He will be assigned to the Reds' Arizona League summer team in Goodyear.
Other 2010 draft picks signed today were sixth-round pick RHP Andrew Cisco, 27th-round pick LHP Joel Bender out of Cincinnati's Oak Hills High School and 28th-round selection RHP Chad Rogers.

I'd say they put him in Arizona to keep him there for the Instructional League and AFL. If he fairs well, i could see him starting the year next year in AA with Devin in Louisville (if not AA then A+).

Cisco had signed to play for the University of Georgia and would have been the jewel of the Bulldogs' recruiting class. One major league scout who watched Cisco pitch his final eight games of his senior season said Cisco was so talented he could have been the Bulldogs' No. 1 starter this past spring.

From Baseball America:

A righthander from Wando High in Mount Pleasant, S.C., Cisco had committed to Georgia. He has outstanding command for a high school pitcher. His arsenal consists of an 88-92 mph fastball, mid-70s curveball and a sinking changeup.

So glad the Reds paid up and got Cisco and it sounds like the kid has some talent, much better than 6th round talent.

It will be interesting how Jocketty handles the catching situation down the line with Meso and Grandal. It definitely isn't a bad thing to have two nice looking catching prospects though.

MLB really needs to move away from this slotting system. Just glancing at the Transaction list from yesterday (and it's not complete, our last two signees weren't shown), 75-100 players signed yesterday. That's a lot of players who pretty much missed an entire summer of development. It's just absurd.

One thing I'm noticing about this year's draft is that the Reds decided not to spend their early picks on high school guys.

Here's a list of the signed players from previous drafts who were signed as 18-year-olds or younger in the first 30 rounds:

2010
Wes Mugarian
Kyle Waldrop

2009
Billy Hamilton
Dan Tuttle
Juan Silva
Tucker Barnhart
Jake Johnson
Mitch Clarke

2008
Tyler Cline
Carter Morrison
Theo Bowe
Raul Rodriguez
JC Sulbaran

2007
Kyle Lotzkar
Nefi Soto
Evan Hildenbrandt
Alex Oliveras
Jordan Wideman
Shea Snowden

2006
Justin Reed
Josh Ravin
Brandon Rice
Tony Brown

I find myself often searching for it when, for instance, I'm wondering about a rookie-ball guy whose name I don't recognize. Or, say, when Jaren Matthews hits a 3-run HR, and I want to mention that he was a xx-round draft choice. I use it a lot.

I think you'll see a slotting system similar to the NBA where there's a set amount, and you can only go over it or under it by a designated percentage. I wouldn't be surprised if it were even designated by age.
