RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Jimmy Dean, a country music legend for his smash hit about a workingman hero, "Big Bad John," and an entrepreneur known for his sausage brand, died on Sunday. He was 81.

His wife, Donna Meade Dean, said her husband died at their Henrico County, Va., home.

She told The Associated Press that he had some health problems but was still functioning well, so his death came as a shock. She said he was eating in front of the television. She left the room for a time and came back and he was unresponsive. She said he was pronounced dead at 7:54 p.m.

He's looked very bad in recent appearances.

No mention of his role in a James Bond movie?

edit--never mind; it's in the article.

That rare combination of talent that covers multiple fields.

Almost an "American Icon", or perhaps he was.

I can remeber Jimmy Dean playing "Josh Clements" in the last season or two of "Daniel Boone" after Ed Ames left the TV show.

I really liked this guy. Witty, country thru-and-thru, multi-talented.

I remember especially the first TV show of Dean's (from Washington, DC) because it featured a Jim Henson Muppet...Rowlf. I was fascinated by Henson's skills.

My favorite hit song of his was 'The First Thing Ev'ry Morning and the Last Thing Ev'ry Night'. A great melody.

I loved his 'no beating around the bush' approach to things.
