The biggest bust in Yankees history was 7 feet tall, made $40 every home game and spent most of his brief career in the upper deck.

From 1979 to 1981, the Yankees employed a mascot named Dandy. He was big and blue and a spectacular failure—a historical oddity for a proud franchise that has collected 27 world championships but would just as soon forget he even existed. Which, to be fair, isn't terribly difficult to do.

Wow, I did not know that. I hope Gapper joins him in mascot heaven.

Very possibly the last thing in the world you'd expect a Yankee mascot to look like. I have no memory of him, thank goodness.

Dandy has the hair and facial hair of Goose Gossage.

I was thinking more along the lines of Thurman Munson, but that seemed wrong somehow.

I was thinking of one of the members of Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.

That story really is more like a Seinfeld episode than real life.

What do you have against Gapper? I mean I know he's a copy of the Philly Phanatic, but so what. He's a good addition to the mascot group, IMO.

Gapper rocks. ;)

I had no idea they even had something like this. Probably Steinbrenner's idea after he saw some other team's mascot get fans interested.

All Reds Mascots are lame. The only one I ever thought was cool was Seattle's Moose. Especially after he broke his ankle...so nasty but cool at the same time.

Still chuckling:
It's one of the sadder stories. Sure, if your idea of a sad story is the untimely "death" of a huge ugly muppet costume with a hideous mustache.

At first I said to myself, Brien Taylor wasn't 7 feet tall...

They had to let him go for selling nickel bags at the bodega on off days.

Who's the crab? I haven't been immersed in the baseball world for that long.

He was the mascot for "The Flats" in Cleveland in the 80's

What a fascinating read.
What I find most remarkable was that it wasn't the Yankees who refused to renew the contract, but the Ericksons.

I can remember Skip Caray on WTBS making fun of that thing. I think the fans did attack at least once because they hated it so much. :D

Dandy looks like the product of a mistake between Fred Flinstone and a hooker...
