Louisville is going tonight at 7:05 ET against Durham. They send Chad Reineke (2-5 2.90 ERA) to the mound.

Carolina is testing Mississippi today at 7:15 ET. Travis Wood (2-4 4.97 ERA) gets the assignment.

Lynchburg is going to double up with Kinston starting at 6:05 ET. Edinson Volquez (0-0 0.00 ERA) starts the first game and Pedro (?) Serrano (2-4 3.62 ERA) hurls in the nightcap.

Dayton starts the proceedings at 7:05 ET versus Fort Wayne. Justin Walker (1-8 5.32 ERA) will be throwing. NOTE: Walker has a 59/9 K/BB rate. Nice. But has given up 10 home runs. Not so nice.

VSL Reds and DSL Reds both play at 10:30 AM ET.

2-0 Lynchburg. Pucket's 9th HR (2-run shot).

What are the REDS going to do with all of their "capable" starting pitching in August?

Volquez
Chapman
Wood
Maloney
Klinker
LeCure

All of those guys with ability with no place to go.

(I put LeCure there because I assume Bailey retakes his spot when he's back and they choose to retain LeCure's value as a starter.)

Volquez struck out the first batter of the 5th inning. Cody Puckett's 2 run HR is the only scoring play of the game.

Volquez gives up a single on a weak grounder to second base.

Just an infield single to 2nd Base.

I completely didn't expect Volquez to pitch this well this soon.

I so hope he completes this rehab 100% healthy.

How many walks has Volquez given up in his 2 starts? 1?

He is pitching well in his rehab, but the control is pretty darn surprising. I havent been watching is he getting a lot of swinging strikes? Chapman treatment?

The Kid pitching against Louisville in the 9th, I used to coach when he was a really little kid. Mike Ekstrom is ready to come up for the D-Rays any day. He was drafted by the Padres and was good for them early, making it to San Diego. Not sure how he got to Tampa Bay, but he's ready to be moved up.

In his first start, yes. I was most impressed with his off speed stuff last week. It was like he was setting the off speed pitch up with his fastball or something hard. He is probabaly headed to Carolina next but unfortunately for me, the Mudcats are about to hit the road when his turn would come around.

I just checked the schedule for Carolina. If Volquez stays on a five day schdule he will pitch his next two games in Tennessee during a six game vist there. He'd pitch the first and last game of that series.

Mudcats getting shelled tonight, 17-7 earlier.

That makes more sense, because I always thought it was July 1st before they'd "let him go" meaning hand him over to Dusty to use as he sees fit.

Donnie Joseph tonight: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

Here are his stats since getting promoted to High-A Lynchburg: 11.1 IP, 4 H, 0 HR, 4 BB, 22 K, 3.00 GO/FO, 1.59 ERA

Combined 2010 stats:

34.1 IP, 17 H, 0 HR, 11 BB, 62 K, 1.73 GO/FO, 16.4 K/9, 1.05 ERA

He's clearly too good for High-A hitters. I'd promote him to Double-A after tonight's game.

I coached a team Chris Burke was on in his younger days. Did they face each other? The outcome would be a referendum on our respective coaching skills.

Honestly he might be too good for AA. I'd consider moving him up to AAA to see if he could be of some help to the big club come August. Chances are against him being up at any point this year, but it wouldn't be far from the realm of possibility he could make the team next year out of Spring Training.

The thing that impresses me is his BB to K rate is exactly the same to RH's as LH's... He absolutely dominates LH's though. 1 Hit in 16 AB's and a 5:1 GB ratio. Mercy.

Just noticed in 66.2 innings he has yet to allow his first professional HR against. That is over the top insanely impressive.

Sounds like stuff will not be an issue at all for Volquez. Just gotta sharpen his control and get the pitch count up. And can we maybe move Jopeph to a level where he's not striking out two batters an inning? This is just stupid
