Only in Dusty Bakers world would a DH hit 9th rofl.

DH are nothing but bats, why do you DH one of your worst hitters roflroflrofl.

I dont understand the thought process of Dusty ever.

Not only is Cairo DHing Dusty is taking his chance to put in his best defensive team and throws it and flushes it.

Completely unacceptable.

Baker is a turd!

I was going to make a joke yesterday that Baker will probably DH Cairo and put the gimpy, octogenarian Cabrera at Shortstop, and the worst outfielder Gomes in Left.

I had just made a prediction that the REDS would win today 3-1, but I'm changing it.

REDS lose 5-1.

Any moron could have made a better lineup.

Cabrera sits and Janish starts. Gomes is DH. Heisey in Left and bats 2nd behind Phillips who leads off.

Phillips....2B
Heisey....LF
Votto.....1B
Rolen......3B
Gomes....DH
Bruce.....RF
Stubbs....CF
Hernandez..C
Janish......SS

I really would like to know what the justification for hitting Cairo DH tonight is. Stubbs, and Nix both better be in the hospital.

The more I think about it the more ridiculous it is.

Who wants to bet that its because Cairo played in Seattle? No joke I would be less surprised by Dusty using that as justification than anything else.

Cairo is 5 for 9 against Cliff Lee. Thats why Dusty is DHing him. Hes going off the stupid small sample size of 9 career ABs against a pitcher, in which none of them have probably came against him since 2008.

I honestly thought that lineup was a unfunny joke when i first saw it. I wish they would hire someone to proof read the lineups before dusty turn them in because that has to have been a misprint when dusty filled it out. doesnt it? Please tell me it was a misprint. How does a guy whos litterally been in the game for like 30 years think thats an acceptable lineup?

And today Cairo will be 0 for 3.

How great would it be to have the Speed of Drew Stubbs batting 9th?

Stubbs
Cabrera
Phillips
Votto
Rolen

That would score some runs. Putting Cairo in front to clog up the bases (if he even gets on) is the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

Guess nobody gets to successfully steal a base tonight.

That has happened quite often this year. They've won a lot in spite of him. But, ti's caught up to the team. The overuse of Masset and Cordero, and now maybe Rhodes, along with the underuse of Janish over Cabrera (if not for many defensive replacements alone).

Can you just enjoy being in first place for 5 minutes without bashing Dusty. We are slumping a little but every team goes through it. You make me want to not even watch the game. Cairo did well when he filled in for Votto and has had success against Lee. I would have started him too tonight. Why not play percentages ?

Because putting your worst defensive OF in the field, combined with your worst option at DH, is stupid managing no matter the sample size.

GIDP

Nix is a lefty going against Cliff Lee. Doubt Nix would have a hit. Stubbs hasn't had a day off in a while, also facing an ace like Cliff Lee would probably destroy what confidence he has. I like the move.

For the record, the Mariners thought so much about Cairo's hitting two years ago, that they let him DH for 4 Plate Appearances out of the 250 he had in 2008.

They lost that day 4-0. He batted 6th and was 0-3 and they pinch-hit for him late in the game. (he had 3 PA's that day and one more PA as a DH another time during the year).

Most teams have been able to get Lee and Hernandez out of the game before the 9th inning and then they score their runs and win the game. But, the REDS have the "Baker says be aggressive approach, led by Joey Votto", so they don't take enough pitches to get Cliff Lee out in 8 innings.

They are going to have to tie it up against Cliff Lee.

That "Baker" approach has this team near the tops in the league in most offensive categories.

It works when you play teams like Houston, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee and the Cubs, but not when you face good pitchers. Against good pitchers, you have to take pitches and not let them go 8 or 9 innings against you, even if it means you're swinging from behind in the count a lot. You can always protect the plate w/ 2 strikes, not swing for the fence like the REDS have done all night, and foul off three or four pitches and make the pitcher work. Not a chance with Baker's philosophy.

Good pitchers become better pitchers when they get ahead. Not everyone swings at the first pitch, but there is no reason to let the pitcher have the free pass to get ahead. If the hitters are chasing bad pitches that is the problem of the hitter. The best pitch you are likely to get from Lee, Carpenter, etc. is the first strike. Cause after they get ahead the beat you in, away, off-speed, etc.

Great teams force good pitchers to throw more pitches against them by taking more pitches and not swinging for the fences. The REDS don't do this, and that's why they struggle against good pitchers more than other teams struggle against good pitchers.

If you're going to win playoff games you're going to have to bat "effectively" against good pitchers, and that means taking pitches early against them. If you notice that he's reading that and is throwing some fastballs down the middle on the first pitch, you have one or two guys keep him honest and look for the dead-red fastball.

If any of you expected a win going into tonight you have more faith in this team than I do. Like the guy above said, if we face a pitcher that anyone has heard of, our bats don't exist. I fully expect us to get it shoved up our butts again tomorrow by Hernandez.

Also, watching Cueto pitch is maddening. Does he not know he's got good stuff or is he just physically unable to throw strikes? His efficiency is no better today than it was two years ago.

NeilHamburger

Bottom line is this offense is just flat out terrible against good pitching and just destroys bad or okay pitching.

It's one thing to struggle against good pitching. But this offense is flat out dominated by anyone who throws well. And I mean dominated to a degree that is bordline absurd. It's the mark of an overrated team, one that will suck as soon as they face a higher level of competition.

Cueto has shown exactly ZERO improvement in 3 years.

When looking at MLB players I tend to look at MLB service time over age. If after 3 years he's shown no improvement, and maybe even regressed, I really don't think he'll ever be more then a 4.5 .500 pitcher.

Yeah he looks great against the Pirates and the Mariners, but against even average lineups Cueto seems to implode. He'll also put together a dominating run like he had in May, and in other games look clueless. Jonny needs to show more consistency, and I think that's what all of us are expecting out of him, because he is certainly capable.

man pitchers sure do suck when they dont throw CG SOs every start.

Cueto has given up 5 ER twice this year and 8 ER once. He has 8 starts where he gave up 3 ER or less.

Other pitchers off the top of my head who have 3 starts this season w 5+ ER:

Halladay: 6,6,5
Lackey: 8,5,6 ( makes 18mill)
Burnett: 6,6,6,8 ( makes 16 mill)
Felix Hernandez: 7,7,5
Garza: 5,6,7
Sabathia: 5,5,6,6

This is jsut a short list. Many other pitchers have 2 starts where they have given up 5+ ER. I think you need to get a reality check. Not every pitcher is gonna throw a perfect game everytime out. Cueto is 24, throws 96 MPH and makes 440k. He is one of our more stable guys in the rotation, I think you need to focus your pitching hate on someone else because it seems you are just complaining for the sake of seeing your own words in print.
