Let's hope it works out better than last time. ;)

Not taking the camera. Apparently, it's bad luck. :D

Yea its bad luck for me... A couple might know what I'm getting at.

Have fun at the game. Maybe you should take it and just hide it for a few innings.

For some reason Chapman has struggled mightily at home this season. Hopefully that changes tonight.

I guess this can be tonight's game thread.

The DSL Reds won 8-5.

Felix Perez had another nice game as he went 3-for-5 with a double. Has he yet to get a Visa or something? Because he needs to be at a higher level.

Jose Guzman: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K

18-year old Guzman now has a 1.20 ERA and 10 BB/17 K in 15 innings.

Chapman gets Jennings to ground to Sutton at 3rd on a 1-2 pitch but Sutton throws it away but then Jennings was thrown out trying to advance to 2nd. Two outs.

Matt Joyce homers on a 2-1 pitch.

OnBaseMachine

And now an infield single on a 1-2 pitch. It seems like Chapman gives up a ton of infield hits.

He retired the two RH batters but has given up hits to the two lefties.

Dan Johnson K's looking.

Chapman: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Chapman entered tonight with a .342 BABIP against which probably backs up my claim that he has allowed a ton of infield hits this season.

Pretty much the only thing I look for in Chapman's line anymore is the BB total. I've seen with my eyes and from other reports that the defense is bad enough behind him where the ER don't matter. Those infield hits don't happen w/ the Reds IF. The .342 BABIP is why you take his ERA with a grain of salt. He's JUST got to get those BB totals down.

He throw 64 strikes and 33 balls. That tells me (also saw this with my own eyes) is that he pumps in strikes, but random batters he loses is and walks them on 3 or 4 pitches.

Three errors in 6+ innings behind Chapman tonight. That could/should have been a seven inning start if not for the poor defense.

I agree 100%. I've followed nearly all of Chapman's start and you are exactly right - he'll be cruising along and then all of a sudden will walk a hitter on four pitches, then rebound for a couple innings and then will walk another hitter on four pitches. When he improves his control, he's going to be extremely tough to hit.

For some reason the milb.com boxscore is showing one of those runs that scored in the 7th inning as earned. If so, that's complete bullcrap. How can you charge a pitcher with an earned run if the only two hitters that reached base reached on errors?

Valiquette: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K...Del Rosario allowed the two runs to score.

I left a little early. I have something that needs my attention.

One thing I saw in Chapman tonight. Regaining composure.

His first batter of the 5th, he threw 2 pitches at 84. Then a 96 mph heater that was smoked for a double. His next 4 pitches were wild. Castillo couldn't handle 1 of them. Again he caught a ball with his bare hand that the ump tossed him. But then he put it back together again. That's a very good sign.

Valiquette was wild. He was wild warming up and wild in the game. But he does throw hard. Topped out at 98. Volquez was easily visible in the Bats dugout. That's one head of hair.

FWIW, boxscores generally show runs as earned until the inning is over.

Then it's calculated.

It's becuase sometimes you are unsure if a run wil be earned or unearned.

Example: batter gets a single and moves to second when the OF bobbles the ball. He goes to third on a GB and scored on a SF. At that stage it looks unearned ( and will be if the next batter gets out), but if the next player gets a hit, it's now earned.

I love the fact that defensive ratings are moot. After the first few weeks of the season, where Cabrera was dreadful, he has been solid. His bat has provided a spark at the top, the slump the last few weeks not withstanding.

FWIW, Marty, while a senile old man, but who has seen and covered way more baseball than any of us here, called Cabrera's defense this season outside of the first few weeks "outstanding"

Thats not to mention the veteran leadership he has brought. I know this board only likes stats and not things like that, which is why this board hated the Rolen trade, hated the Cabrera signing, and hates Dusty Baker. But there is more to baseball than stats, and thats why those 3 are the main cogs as to the jump from last season to this.

He is and showing some pop but Torreyes is destroying the ball down there. He is hitting .388 with a slash of .465 / .602 / 1.067 in 98 AB's... 8 SB as well... The most impressive stat with all of that power and speed he has shown is that he only has k'd 4 times... Only 5 errors at SS as well in 28 games vs 6 in 21 for Valor...

Don't know where he came from but he is the MVP of the VSL right now.

Nobody hates stats for proving a player's worth more than I do. I hate Cabrera's limited defense. Marty doesn't know any more about defense than I do (or 30 million other people). Cabrera's old and has no business playing Shortstop as a full-time starter for a contending team. Offensively, he's done well while being in the #1 hole. That said, he's still our best option at Shortstop most of the time, but by most, it's 75%, or a bit more than Hernandez plays behind the plate.

If I was Manager, I'm telling him with a straight face that he's got little range compared to a few years ago and those are the facts of life. Don't get your panties in a ruffle when I replace you defensively late in a game when we're ahead. Get over it when I sit you down for day games after night games because I have an excellent defensive Shortstop who's going to make the whole team better. He'll get to two balls a game that you would turn into hits if you're playing Shortstop. Between you and Scotty, there's a hole as big as the Grand Canyon every day. I've got to narrow that gap some days. (Rolen's range has been surprisingly good this year, actually.) He's also going to reach base as often as you do.

I'm sure they'll cross that bridge when they get to it (or at least come significantly closer), but a cursory look at the rotation schedule has July 7th lining up with Mike Leake's start.

Valor was back at SS on Sunday. Torres with two more hits, including a triple, and is now batting .396. Torres was playing 2nd.

Torres:
AVE- .396 (1ST)
OBP - .470 (2ND)
SLG - .624 (1ST)
OPS - 1.094 (1ST)

League rankings in parentheses. In looking at the league stats one would say this is a pitcher's league.

VSL Reds team line is this (.251/.336/.357/.693.) and they are an upper-half offensive club in that league.

Speaking of Humberto Valor, he's currently hitting .217/.299/.348 - .647 OPS with 5 BB/7 K in 69 atbats. The K/BB is nice but his other stats are lacking ... however, he's got a 20.3 LD% and only a .185 BABIP. Using minorleaguesplits.com's luck feature, if you were to neutralize Valor's stats based on his peripherals, he would be hitting .347/.422/.541 - .963 OPS.
