Say what you will, Cochran is exactly what this organization needed (stable starter) and I am glad he is being rewarded for all those years he toiled in Independent ball. I'd like to see him AAA at some point this year. He did ok there last year and deserves the extra bit of pay that comes from the promotion.

Louisville is winning 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Todd Frazier is 1-for-1 with his 8th HR of the season. Cozart has doubled in his only atbat.

Oh I wasn't degrading him, I just thought it was a nice story. This year's Justin Lehrs.

Did you hear/see that on the Bats broadcast? We were told yesterday Chapman would start Thursday.

If so, not sure I like it, unless Chapman is having his innings lowered now, or is being readied for the pen. Volquez is supposed to go 90 pitches, so its not supposed to be a short start.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm watching the game now. Julio Teheran of the Braves is NASTY.

The Braves High-A rotation consists of Julio Teheran, Randall Delgado, and Arodys Vizcaino. That's sick. That's three potential top-of-rotation arms.

Scoring question for everyone....

Billy Hamilton had a hit last inning. He overslid second base and was tagged out on the other side of the bag. He would have been safe had he not overslid the bag. He was credited with a single. I always thought he would have been awarded a double. Anyone have an explanation?

Tennessee 4 to 3 over Carolina. Klinker was strong as usual but Lee Tabor wasn't much in relief.

I thought so too. As long as he touched the second base bag it should have been ruled a double.

Depends on whether he reached second base safely. If he did, then overslid, he ought to be given a double.

By rule, an out on an overslide would be scored as he he never reached the base. Most common place you see this is on a stolen base attempt. If he rounded the bag and then got tagged out trying to get back, he is credited with the base.

Klinker pitches well for Carolina: 6IP 4H 1R 1BB 2K. Bullpen comes on and gives up 3R in 2IP to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Sound familiar?

Makes sense or else you would have to give the player a stolen base and a caught stealing on the same play.

I believe that happens on pickoffs, though. Its a PO, and if they try to go to second, its also a CS.

Not sure how hard Lotzkar was throwing tonight but I have heard he has been up to 93 in extended spring training. Good to see the Walczak kid in there with three scoreless innings. He also missed spring training with an injury. I have heard from some good sources that he has some serious, filthy stuff. Well over 90 with a dirty slider. Baseball America gave him a mention in the prospect handbook, I believe.

Junior Arias is 2-for-3 with a RBI.

redsof72
06-23-2010, 12:13 AM
If the pitcher threw to first and the runner started for second, it would be considered a stolen base attempt, even if the runner then tried to go back to first and got tagged out by the first baseman. If the pitcher threw to first and the runner broke for second and beat the first baseman's throw to second, it would be a stolen base. Where it gets tricky is if the runner breaks on first movement against a lefty and the pitcher throws the ball to first and throws it away, the runner still gets the stolen base because you can't presume that the first baseman would have taken the throw and then made an accurrate throw to second to get the runner. This is one of the most commonly mis-understood rules by first-year official scorers.

Pick-offs are not official stats even though they are listed on the box scores. You can have a pick-off and a caught stealing on the same play and commonly do.

Billings ties it up on a crazy play. Runners on 1st and 2nd and a grounder to shortstop where the shortstop knocked the ball down but couldn't make the play. He wound up throwing the ball to second late and the runner came around from 2nd to score on the play. The runner from first made it to third base. So in a tie game with the home team with a runner on 3rd base, the ump calls out the grounds crew and the tarp in the bottom of the 12th.

I was at this game, just got back home from Myrtle Beach, but his last pitch in warm ups hit 97 on the gun. I didn't know that he threw that hard, he was consistently sitting at 94-95. Was he just throwing harder because he was only throwing one inning or does he normally sit there?

He can get that high as a starter, but he doesn't sit there as a starter. Sits 90-94 as a starter.
