Doc: Marty still thinking of Joe
Brennaman will have friend on mind when Marty & Joe Field is dedicated Monday
By Paul Daugherty • pdaugherty@enquirer.com • June 26, 2010
Marty Brennaman is as sentimental as a bill collector. If you want to make the Hall of Famer cry, tell him it's raining the day he's supposed to play Augusta National.
So who was the man on the other end of the phone, pausing then apologizing for the words that stayed jammed in his throat?
“We were sitting in a golf cart on the 14th tee at Kenwood Country Club,'' Brennaman begins.
It's a story he tells often. It beats him up every time. The last time he saw Joe Nuxhall was three days before Joe died. They'd been “won'' in a charity auction, and were playing golf. ...

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Nuxhall several times. He was always a class act and did so many wonderful things for the community. I would imagine that Marty has quite the hole in his heart after working side by side with him for so many years.

When you worked together, and were that close with someone for so many years, I doubt it's a feeling that will ever go away. Sometimes time doesn't heal all wounds.

Lance played a call of Joe's, of Norm Charlton running over Mike Scioscia. It caught me off guard. I had to pause for a second. My wife's grandfather died three years ago. Her grandmother has not changed the answering machine message, which has him speaking on it. It can be very weird.

I miss Joe a lot. He was just an incredible person and a very good announcer too. I love hearing his call of Joe Oliver's game winning hit in the 1990 World Series. I also loved hearing him yell "Get up! Get up! Get outta here!" when a Reds player would hit a HR. I hope Joe makes it into the Hall of Fame someday.

Marty and Joe were my childhood. I'm 30. They were it. It will never be the same.
Joe is looking down right now and has to be thrilled with these Reds . He's got a big smile on his face, too.

Two of the hardest days I ever had at the radio station involved Joe. His "final" game in October of 2004, which I produced, and the day of his death. I got choked up when he and Marty did the postgame show in 'O4, and I was pretty much a teary mess on the day he died. That one definitely wasn't a good day to be working in sports, but I had to do my job.

I made a CD after Joe's passing of a lot of his calls and stories, and the emotional Oct '04 postgame show. It's nothing fancy, but if anybody wants a copy, PM me.

Tried to PM you about it but your box was full. I'm guessing you had a lot of interest in it! I would love to get a copy.
