Love to see Cozart hitting the ball. He is probably the Riverbat batter I most want to see succeed for the rest of the year. My dream would be for him to hit .280/.340/.450 and then force the Reds to decline Cabrera's option and then go with Janish and Cozart at short next year and bat them 8th. I would really like to see him succeed.

Just got back from Durham. Thought I was going to see the perfect game, sort of. Volquez was much better than what we saw in Lynchburg several weeks back. He hit 96 three times on the gun that I recall and maybe 97 once. He was still most impressive with his off speed pitch. I think Voquez is ready but would give him another start before moving him up.

Chapman relieved him and started out as advertised. He hit 99 on his first pitch for a strike, 100 on his second pitch for a strike, and broke one off at 89 for strike three on the first batter. I believe it was the second batter that was HBP at 102 mph...had to hurt. He was really inconsistent. Hopefully we'll see him again in this series. Came apart from there.

Zack Cozart crushed a ball to left and hit 'The Bull' in left field, for you all that know what I'm talking about. I'm very tired but it was fun. Hated to the guys lost after the start Volquez had. Maybe tomorrow night. We'll be there for the first pitch.

Scott Carroll had another good start tonight for Carolina. One earned run (two total) in five innings. The best thing was: he struck out six. His strikeouts had previously been down. His ERA is now 2.17.

For those of you who are pessimistic on Chapman (and I'm not making any accusations--I just know there are a lot of skeptics out there, especially outside of RZ), when Randy Johnson was Aroldis Chapman's age, he was walking 7.1 batters per 9.0 innings pitched (which escalated to 8.2 BB/9IP the following season). Chapman may not live up to the hype, but he seems far more advanced than Randy Johnson was at the same age.

I'm really not pessimistic about his future at all. I just simply do not think he is ready right now and I think there is pressure to bring him up before he is ready because of the big contract and because of the media hype (that has thankfully died down).

I think the move to the bullpen was forced out of need. Major League need not minor. I'm not sure it was the best decision longterm for his progression. He is just to wild currently to be effective at the ML level. If he comes up and self destructs, or costs the team one or two games in the course of a couple weeks, then how is that positive for his confidence? I hope he keeps struggling out of the bullpen. Just enough to keep Jocketty from pulling the trigger.

Rodriguez, who leads the Pioneer League in RBIs, initially stayed in the game, but left after fouling a pitch off his lower body in the fifth inning. He was replaced by Juan Duran.
