Get OC home.

_Sir_Charles_
07-01-2010, 04:03 PM
yeah....we're going to have to come up with some better catch-phrases for Wood. :)

Agreed.

First time I saw someone post T. Wood in the thread the name "Tiger" popped in my head automatically.

OCab leads off with a double!

That's 2 hit yesterday for Gomes, 2 more today. Maybe, just maybe he's coming out of his slump and is ready for a big July. Would certainly be nice to have a hot johny on this road trip.

It's just funny how fans want to bench a guy that is producing like Gomes, but are willing to give a free pass to someone like Stubbs because of the dreaded "P" word. (Potential.)

People don't flat out say Gomes sucks. But when they call for him to be benched when he's been one of the most-productive members of this lineup over the last 2 years, I have to laugh.

And your point is...? Because that's really not a good final # for someone getting everyday ABs in the 7 hole. For a platoon player (which is what Stubbs should be IMO) it would be good.

If you've paid any attention to my posts, I've far from given Stubbs a free pass. Stubbs gives you defense, it never slumps.

When Gomes is bad at the plate like he's been in 2 of the 3 months this season, he's pretty much useless.

I don't think anybody is giving Stubbs a "free pass". I think they're letting him take his lumps during his rookie campaign. He shows flashes of what he's capable of quite often. He's got some tremendous power when he makes good contact. He's a VERY good defensive CF'er. He's "stupid fast". But he's still having trouble adjusting to MLB pitching. He's playing well enough to justify keeping him in there. Barely. You've got to expect some struggles from rookies. As long as the club is still playing well and we're still right there in the race...leave him alone. If we were to start to free fall...I think a change would happen.

I'm pretty sure most teams would be happy to take someone w/ Stubbs range and 73 rbi in the 7 hole every season. 73 rbi is nothing to sneeze at. Throw in the defense on top of that, and you can live with his ups and downs for a rookie.

5.88 ERA.

It speaks for itself.

Reliever's ERA isn't that great a metric. A couple of bad outings can really skew things. Masset has been ok since beginning of April but they did hit the ball pretty hard off him today.

I had no problem leaving Wood in. I had no problem leaving Wood in after the first walk.

I would have brought Rhodes in.

You can't pitch Arthur EVERY day. As for Dusty using Nick, I had NO problem with that whatsoever. He'd been on a roll lately. 5 straight outings of perfect baseball. No hits, no runs, no walks. He's a guy we need if we're going to be successful. The problem I had with it was that he gave up ONE HIT and immediately everyone quickly pounced on him saying "awful pitcher" "horrible pitcher" and the like. He was throwing strikes. Guess what, sometimes the hitters will hit strikes. But he's back to trusting his stuff again like he was last year and he's pounding the strike zone. Sometimes they'll hit you. But I'll take pounding the zone to nibbling any day of the week.

5.88 ERA.

It speaks for itself.

Yeah except for the fact that it CLEARLY doesn't.
-Why would you ignore the fact that after a very rough April, 13 runs in 10.1 innings, he's pitched very well over a much larger stretch of time?
-Never mind the fact that ERA doesn't even capture the times when a reliever gives up inherited runners so it's not like it's a useful tool in predicting his future performance anyway.
