He'll only pitch if Harang can't go.

They'll still try Harang first, per Matt Maloney.

I say pitch the lefty.

My god why is this a question? Put Aaron on the DL retro to the 1st of July, he can come off on the 15th after the All Star break. Give Maloney his start tonight and Sunday and be done with it.

Nobody will bite on a Harang trade if they put him on the DL right before the All-Star break. If he only has a start "pushed back" a day, that's a lot different.

No one will bite on a Harang trade anyways. DL him for goodness sake.

Wouldn't they already be hesitant to bite on a trade for Harang given his missed start due to back issues?

For all the joking that goes no about Harang, many teams would like to have him pitching for them if the REDS could pay for 1/2 to 2/3rd's of the rest of his 2nd half salary. That's $4M for the REDS and $2M for some other club or $3M each. He's shown the last 10 starts that he can come up with 5 or 6 decent ones. Teams love their Veteran pitchers, and many teams would certainly take a flyer on Harang for 15 starts @ $2-$3M for the rest of the season.

If the REDS have to toss in a prospect to get someone to take on more of the Harang salary, then they can do that.

No. Pitchers get pushed back a couple of days all the time for back issues. It's pretty normal. It's extremely rare the pitcher that goes through an entire season never getting pushed back a day or two throughout the season for some physical relief. The days of pitchers getting 36 starts (once every 5 days) on a season are long gone.

I'd actually like to see how Maloney does.

This is why Arroyo is so valuable.

If Maloney doesn't fare well tonight, I could see Dusty bringing Arroyo back on three days rest to pitch against Philly on Sunday. Hopefully that doesn't have to happen.

Maloney has good control, but doesn't have big league stuff. He couldn't even throw it by Santana.

Matt said that he threw everything he had at him.

That doesn't bode well, if that's the case.

Gamecenter didn't show any sliders, though. And when he struck him out the next AB, it was with a slider.

Anybody know how good/bad Maloney's slider is? Bad enough that he's a sinker/change guy to even lefties?

Santana doesnt strike out a lot anyways. Seriously look at it.

For what it's worth Chris said in the game that Maloney doesn't have an out pitch a starter needs.

That seems to be the developing consensus of opinion.

OTOH, he didn't fan 732 in 754.2 minor league innings without something.

Oh, and there's the 1.19 career minor WHIP to go with the K's.
