IIRC, the last time Joey played in an All Star type of game, he talked about how he changes his hitting approach a little bit because he knows he's facing pitchers that all throw strikes and takes more swings. He may have done that tonight too. You get behind some of these guys and you aren't going to see another fastball in that PA.

Now lets get an All Star Game in Cincy!

With the huge protest MLB players are talking about, with a large majority talking about boycotting the game next year in Arizona, and with the recent success of the Civil Rights games, I have a small feeling we could be seeing one sooner than later.

Not too often do you see 3 African American players in the same outfield (Young, Byrd, Bourn). Pretty cool to see, and good for the game.

This was a pretty good game overall. It had a little bit of everything! Bummed Joey didn't get more to do but I'm still just happy he was there at all. Brandon and Scott made some great plays in the field and Scott contributed to the run total so that was very cool. Kinda glad Arthur didn't get to pitch (he needed the rest) and overall great pitching from both teams. I'm a very proud Reds fan tonight. Let's kick some behind in the second half! :D :D :D

Yeah! Great job by the NL to break the streak, especially the pitching an McCann. Rolen and BP did great representing the Reds, Votto not so much, not sure why he swung at both 1st pitches he saw. Shame Rhodes never got in, but oh well.

What dooo you know- National League wins!

And the final play- just for fun:

3 out
Bottom of 9th over

3-1, NL

This game made me want the Reds to trade for Byrd lol.

I was discussing this with Cubs fans at the game last week. Something about liking Byrd made me really like him, and a knowledgeable Cub fan (insert joke here) resoundingly (is that a word?) agreed with me. He said something along the lines of "He just plays so different than all of the other Cubs." I had to giggle a bit.

Living in Chicago, I've seen my fair share of Cubs game, and he definatley does. Guy always hustles.

I would love to see him on the Reds, not sure how realistic that is though.

This game definatley made me like him even more, though.

Him or Byrd. Byrd had a great AB right before McCann's triple and then made the play in the ninth.

What is ridiculous is all they have to do is start the pre game earlier. They should start the telecast at 7 or 7:30 do whatever pregame they want to do and then the game could start around 8 where now it will start closer to 9.

I agree. Just way too much stuff for this for a pregame. I got to watch exactly one inning before I had to go to bed. Just crazy. I'm glad I have a DVR and can watch it later.

Not sure if this is anywhere else on the site, but this quote from the ESPNChicago take is just another reason to love No. 19

Not every National League All-Star was firmly in Byrdís corner after the victory. Cincinnatiís Joey Votto had a different take on Byrdís performance.

ďI donít like the Cubs,Ē Votto said. ďAnd Iím not going to pat anybody with a Cubs uniform on the back. But because he made that really cool play, it turned out to be a really cool experience. Iím really glad we got the win today.Ē

Footnote to the game: Girardi didn't use ARod in the game. Had a chance to give him an AB w/as the tying run in the 9th.

On WFAN this a.m. they were saying that 30 years ago, Boss Steinbrenner would've fired Girardi; and 20 years ago, Boss Stienbrenner would've called Girardi and berated him after the game, then if the Yankees lost the World Series because they didn't have home field, he would've fired him.

Apparently the reason Rodriguez did not play was he had a sore thumb and Girardi decided he did not want to use him unless absolutely necessary. Which is kind of interesting the Yankees manager did not play his player Rodriguez with a sore thumb but did play Beltre from the Red Sox who was playing with a sore hamstring.

Actually, Ryan Braun says hello. Braun made the best defensive play of the night, and it really wasn't even close IMO.

Beltre really wanted to play, and had every opportunity to take himself off the roster. Forget A-Rod and Beltre, Wigginton and Bautista can both play 3rd, and if using Bautista at 3rd left them short in the OF, he had Swisher. When he took Longoria out, he put Wigginton in at 3rd, then used Swisher to hit for him, then he put Beltre in at 3rd, without Wigginton ever getting a PA or Swisher playing anywhere in the field. To me, that's how you manage if you're trying to make sure to get Wigginton and Swisher and Beltre all into the game in their first, and maybe only, All Star Game appearances. It's definitely not how you manage if you're concerned you might run out of players to play 3rd base.
