If so what would it take to land him?

I'm sure he could.

But it wouldn't be pretty.

harang and alonso or harang and francisco...reasoning behind harang is we need cap room to fit in berk's contract and astros will free up that money after the season

I think I'd pass on Berkman.

I don't get this idea at all.

Reds will stand pat with all position players and bolster the bullpen.

A slight correction to your post. There is no salary cap in baseball, but I get your point. The Reds sort of play it, whether they have to or not, like there is a cap.

I thought about Berkman earlier in the year, but I don't see him as a huge upgrade, I think he could help. I just don't like the price tag in this instance.

He would probably not play left field all that well, but name the last defensive left fielder the Reds had? I'm 40 years old and have followed the Reds since I was six or seven years old and I never remember them having a guy that was known for defense in left field, not as a regular player any way.

Besides, since most people on this blog do want to part with any of the prospects that we have - your idea won't pass muster. It is, however, I believe, an interesting thought.

Again how is Berkman an upgrade from what we have?

Agreed.

Probably a downgrade from Gomes/Heisey/Nix

Why would want him. >?

The duo of Nix and Gomes got us in first place for the 1st half of the season.

Gomes was arguably a all star this year.

He can't play the outfield anymore and Joey isn't going anywhere so it is a moot point.
