Junior Arias is out of the lineup tonight for the AZL Reds. Ismael Guillon is pitching. His stats this season: 18.2 IP, 17 H, 0 HR, 6 BB, 21 K, 2.41 ERA. 18-year old projectable LHP with 90-93 mph fastball and a good feel for a changeup. I think he'll be viewed as one of the Reds best pitching prospects by the end of the season.

Attended that game with muddie, who was kind enough to come up with good tickets and share his expertise on players he's seen more than the rest of us.

Of course, he hadn't seen Felix Perez in a Mudcat uniform. Perez--who may, in fact, have upgraded his gold chain in celebration of the promotion--obviously made an immediate impression, yanking two solid hits to right field. The second was ruled a double, but probably should have been a single and two-base error. Mike Costanza, one of muddie's favorites, stung the ball all night. Kris Negron looked good both ways. And Luis Terrero, reassigned to Carolina, owned the fifth inning. He made a very nice diving catch, then gunned down the runner tagging up from second to end the top of the inning. In the bottom, he lofted a towering home run to right-center, over the high fence that encircles the entire field but for a short stretch down the right-field line. The fence made me appreciate Mesoraco's power a bit more. As for Mes: for most of the night, he looked like a dead pull hitter, lining foul balls and singling to left. Then, with two strikes, he laced a nice double to right-center. He also made a futile but inspiring dive at a foul pop. The guy's a gamer.

Scott Carroll was in control of the game until the fifth, when he got knocked around. He hit 95 on the gun, but that was surprising to muddie and me. Boxberger hit 98 and dropped in some good-looking breaking pitches; then grooved one for the two-run homer that decided the game. Lee Tabor had an interesting inning in the ninth, walking the first two guys before he found his 91-mph fastball and dominated the next three hitters, finishing two of them with curves.

If Perez and Terrero stick around, it wouldn't be at all surprising to see Carolina finish high in the standings for the second half of the season.

Jordan Hotchkiss was back on the beam tonight for Lynchburg: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K. ERA now 2.35. And Denis Phipps--playing center field with Perez gone, Fellhauer remaining in left--marked his return to the High-A with a 2-run HR.

If Billy Hamilton can maintain a decent walk rate, he will be a major league SS.

Except the only way to do that is by hitting. Unless you're Coco Cordero, major-league pitchers tend not to walk guys who don't hit much.

Kevin Goldstein on Billy Hamilton:

Billy Hamilton, SS/2B, Reds (Rookie-level Billings): 2-for-4, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K, 3 SB. 2009 second-round pick is batting .344 since 2-for-21 start; plus-plus runner is raw, but developing quickly.

I'd move him to 2B first. You need great defense there, too, and Hamilton himself has said he feels very comfortable there. Lots of other shortstops in the system.

Speaking of plus plus runners, I watched Billings last night and Theo Bowe can absolutely fly. Strange thing is, he is not a good base stealer at all. He was caught stealing twice and neither time was it particularly close.

19 for 23 in his previous 2 years. He can't be that bad.

Perhaps I saw him on a bad night, but there is a large difference between trying to steal in the GCL and in the Pioneer League. The PL has some college pitchers/catchers in the league who have learned to hold runners on a little more than the typical GCL crowd of high school pitchers. They are on the next two nights as well, so I will be watching him if he tries to run some more. Both times he was thrown out last night weren't close as the guy covering had the ball as Bowe began to go into his slide. The catcher has thrown out a good rate of runners this season (36%), but I don't think he is the next coming of Johnny Bench out there.

I think its easier to find the 2b than it is to find those other 2 spots though. Im not going to be mad if he plays 2B at the ML level. I would just see what hes got in CF.

Yorman is supposed to be a plus CF- why wouldn't he be in CF?

I'd like to see Silva and Arias in Dayton next season. They have both handled the AZL very well, and could even benefit from seeing some time in Billings this year. I'd like to get the core of Yorman, Duran, Hamilton, Arias and Silva playing together as much as possible. If it meant bumping Lohman up to Lynchburg, so be it. The guy was a third round pick out of a major college program, he should be able to handle high A in his second professional season.

I would hold off on Arias to full season ball for now. He has 19 strikeouts and 2 walks this season. That isn't good and suggests he would get eaten alive in full season ball. He should very likely be in Billings next season.

Where do you play Gregorious and HRod if Lohman is there? Lohman will be in Dayton next year. I'd be fine with either one at SS or 2B. When Read has been in the same lineup as Yorman this year, Yorman has been in RF. So obviously they like Read in CF better right now. Not to say that they will in the future. Silva and Arias will more than likely start out at Billings next year. I'd rather they be brought along slowly. Same for Duran. But after his last 10 days or so, I am starting to see the potential.

Not to mention the 13 errors in 18 games. Arias has alot to work on, but the raw talent is very much there.

Certainly. The raw ability is oozing out of the kid. But he is still plenty needing reps as seen by certain parts of his game.
