From Buster Olney's twitter:

Heard this: The Reds are looking hard for a right-handed reliever. Pure speculation: You wonder if Kerry Wood would be a good fit.

Wood is too expensive and has put up bad numbers this year. Pass.

Only if we can make you feel small at the same time.
My favorite shirt of all time was the one Red Reporter put out "We boo because you suck."

What I'd give to be able to get one of those.

I want Leo Nunez from the Marlins. He turns 27 in August and is having an excellent season: 36.2 IP, 9.08 K/9, 2.21 BB/9, 2.95 ERA. Maybe the Reds can put together a package for Ricky Nolasco and Leo Nunez.

There's a lot of RH relievers out there. We should be able to come away with 2-3 and really rebuild this bullpen without increasing payroll by a significant amount.

We do realize that Kerry Wood has been lit up like a Christmas tree, right? I'm all for adding an established reliever who can bolster the staff, but it better be a real upgrade.

I agree. Wood's been terrible this year.

But how about a Cordero + low prospects for Wood trade? The Reds might have to kick in some money.

Wood couldn't be much worse than Cordero and his contract is up at the end of this year. I think the odds of Wood putting it together and having a strong second half in the NL Central is far greater than Cordero doing the same.

6.30 ERA, FIP of over 5.00, K rate down significantly, BB rate up slightly -- big ol' pass from me. About the only thing Kerry Wood has going for him these days is a name people recognize.

Matt Capps would be a great pickup. Is cordero a free agent after this year or next? If its this year then Capps could be the setup man this year and take over closer next year. Im sure he wouldnt come cheaply though.

Cleveland would be a seller, they are not taking on Cordero unless the Reds pay his full salary till the end of his contract. Not happening.

The trade is likely to be minor leaguers for a righty reliever.

Over his last 10 or so outings: 9 and 2/3s, 7 hits, 3 runs, 4 BB 10 K, 15/12 GB/FB

He’s fine.

And he's from Texas.

Yeah, it's more about what he's gonna do rather than what he's done. If they see improvement from whatever was a problem earlier, i'm game.

There's cherrypicking, and then there's identifying patterns.

9 and 2/3 innings does not a pattern make.

It may be the start of one but for now it's just a really really small sample size.

You could say that being a major league reliever is all based upon small sample sizes.

It's a sharp departure from where he was earlier in the year. Plus, if you saw him against the Reds, you know he's still got plus stuff.

Veteran, uber-competitive, can close. Would fit the ballclub nicely.

Leo Nunez should be the Reds No. 1 relief target, IMO. 36.2 IP, 9.08 K/9, 2.21 BB/9, 0.25 HR/9, 2.95 ERA. If you like FIP, his FIP is 2.19. He would greatly improve the Reds bullpen.

My ideal RHs for the pen: Homer Bailey and Mike Leake. Unless were getting a stud, I think our internal options are the best ones.

It seems like it always takes him a long time to get going... I'd hate to put him in in a tight game to have him implode.

Yes Leo is the one I have been keeping tabs on. Nolasco though I'll pass on. Cody Ross and I might consider taking a chance on Mike Lamb who seems to have been a horrible match for the Marlins spacious park. It might be nice to have a LH IF bat to backup at 1st and 3rd if he could show some bounce back, quickly.

WOuld you rather Matt Capps implode. I'm not suggesting either will be lights out -- just that most of the options available via trade aren't any better.

I like the idea of giving Bailey a shot in the pen. He has had quite a few chances at the rotation and quite frankly it appears better options are emerging. Still think his arm could be of value to this franchise in a bullpen role. I don't see the harm in giving him a shot.

lollipopcurve

Bailey and Leake are bad ideas, IMO. These guys are trained as starters. They don't do the "4 times in 5 days" thing, especially not in the middle of a season in which they've been starting the whole time, or injured. For the Reds to get upgraded in the pen, they need a guy who can be out there often and not embarrass himself.

I have no problem milking whatever we can from Bailey, so I have no problem thrusting him into a bullpen role. But I don't think messing with Leake is the best answer at this point. Just let Leake throw his next ten starts, and shut him down.
