Worst hitter in the major leagues is probably a bit of a stretch, but I'll admit he looks like a good candidate to be called that at times. What's irritating is it looks like if it's anywhere close to the plate, sometimes even if it's not, he just flips his bat out there and kind of lunges at the ball, and even if it is a flyball to the track, it's rather lazy and routine.

Really this whole offense is pathetic right now. Yes we faced two good ones in Philly in Halladay and Hamels, but Hamels isn't really at the top of his game. Last night was a bit of a mirage because we only had 5 hits, it's just 4 were home runs.

Now we stand a very real chance of losing 1-0 for the third time in the last 5 games. Wood should have 3 wins at this point (including today), and right now he's looking at 0-1.

Miller's a poor hitter, but Hanigan hasn't exactly lit it up since he's been back. He did walk a couple of times last night, so maybe he's getting there. It's also not Dusty's fault that Rolen is ailing.

How about the 1 hitter? Brandon is 0-4 today. If he gets on base 1 time, we're probably tied, 2 times we might be leading.

And I'm not knocking Brandon, as he's played very well this year, a deserving All Star. I'm just saying if your leadoff hitter is 0-4 and you have those other numbers, that may be part of the issue as well.

no dude you have to blame everything on Dusty on this board.. there is no other reason that the Reds are losing than Dusty is the worst human being and manager in the history of the world.. That being said...

We've had games where our reserves have came in and scored 10 runs.. it's just one of those days.. Some kind of mental block on this team that when one person goes bad they all go bad..

Your defense of this crap is pretty astonishing. Start Janish, Heisey, and Hanigan and chances are at some point of the game one of them probably breaks through driving in a couple runs or goes yard. Sure as hell is a heck of a lot better chance than Cairo, Nix, and Miller.

I don't care... this team has to stop losing 1-0 games. Obviously they happen, and teams hit ruts offensively. I remember earlier this year when a work buddy asked if I saw what the Mets did to the Phillies, shutting them out 3 games in a row I believe.

But this is probably going to be neck and neck all the way with the Cardinals and I don't think the wild card is coming out of our division, but we'll see. It's games like this when you made it easy on a struggling pitcher and wasted a great pitching performance that can come back to haunt.

Of course, I'm sure there are Cards fans right now saying "Dang it, we get a great performance from Suppan and we're losing."

well there is not much we can do about it so i'd rather be up a half game than down a half game

if you told me going into the weekend that we were going to take 2-3 from the Rockies I would be happy.. today was a crappy loss but it wasn't like the other 1-0 losses where it didn't feel like we had a chance to score anything.. The rockies pitched well when it counted and beat us. We'll get'em tomorrow.. we'll go 3-1 against the nats and h ave a good 5-2 homestand..

Well its nice to know you're content with losing games for no reason. That's kind of like saying when you go in buying a lotto ticket and win $1,000, that you would be content with someone stealing $990 of it from you immediately after because going in you would have been happy with a $10 winner.

Bottom line, this team shouldn't be losing this many games 1-0. If that really doesn't piss you off I don't know what to say.

im not content in losing dude.. I'm just being realistic.. 2-3 is not horrible.. i'm as pissed as you are about this game.. but I also am not wanting my managers head and ready to declare the end of the world.. i'm just happy to be in first place in July and am trying to enjoy it and not getting too mad at these loses.. If i recall, this time last year we were on like a 10 game losing streak..

And the thing that gets me more then anything, is that I get the feeling both Walt and Dusty have no clue why this team struggles so mightly in some games. It's because they don't work the count, and if someone has even decent stuff against them they just fall over themselves hacking, consequently they get shut out because they make the game easy for someone hitting their spots.

Thats why this team has 11 shut outs against them, and has lost more 1-0 then in the entire last 6 years combined. Changes need to be made in this offense. If you guys think this is bad, wait until that west coast trip to LA, San Fran and San Diego. Can you imagine what this team of hackers will do out in those parks against those pitchers?

Brutal, is how I would call it unless they can get 1-2 strong OBP guys in there.

I'm telling you that trip out West will KILL this season unless something in this offense changes. And it won't, Walt and Dusty don't understand OBP.

Its more the bench than anything else. Cabrera has been flat out awful but other than that everyone else has been decently productive.

The bench on the other hand is Nix who if he isnt hitting a homer doesnt do anything, and Cairo who if isnt hitting singles is just a guy who cant use his shoudlers when he swings.

i have faith that walt will do something to help this lineup.. he is never content.. we'll see. I'M PISSED OFF i PROMISE!!!!!!!!!!! im right there with you... but to me a 1-0 loss is just the same as a 10-9 loss.. a loss is a loss. It's frustrating as hell when we can't score runs.. i guess i'm just trying to look at the big picture more than the small one. The big picture is that we haven't had a starter give up more than 2 runs since last Friday. If this keeps up the offense will come around like it did the past 2 days and we will win more often than not.

couldnt have been said any better, and as we speak the cardinals r coming back. that's why we can't keep losing games like this if we expect to be real contenders

Hindsight is 20/20, and yes I would have liked Stubbs to steal second, or attempt to. But they mentioned how they were timing Huston Street, and to steal most guys need a pitcher who gets the ball from the mound to the plate in 1.4 seconds or more, though Stubbs can probably steal on a guy who gets it there in 1.3 seconds. Street was getting it to the plate in less than 1.2 seconds, so they weren't green lighting Stubbs I guess.

If he attempts to steal and gets thrown out, that doesn't do you any good either... and apparently as quick as Street was to the plate they thought there was a good chance of that happening. Although I'll admit, I'd rather be aggressive and lose that way than to watch guys swing at crap in the dirt and be unable to get a guy in from third with 1 out.

That 9th inning, and even the Rockies 8th inning Friday night, is why I'll probably never be completely on the "strike outs are just another out" bandwagon. I understand the logic, and there are sometimes worse ways to make outs in terms of grounding into a double play or something. But man, if you just nub one off the end of the bat it might be a blooper that falls in, it might be a slower roller down the third base line that the guy can't make a play on in time, it might be a rather routine ground ball to short but the guy doesn't get his feet set or can't get the ball out of his glove in time.

And of course the Dodgers couldn't handle prosperity so we're back in second place.:thumbdown

Since I don't have much time right now these are back-of-the-napkin stats.
Huston Street has faced 1370 batters in his career and there have been 40 stolen base attempts. That is one stolen base attempt for every 34.3 PA.
So far in 2010 there have been 56,373 official at-bats. There have been 1,245 stolen base attempts. That works out to one stolen base attempt for every 45.3 PA.
Of the 40 stolen base attempts against Street 32 have been successful. That is a pretty impressive 80% success rate.
I understand these stats are rough, but it appears that stolen base attempts are more frequent against Huston Street than the league average. And those attempting to steal against Street are pretty successful.

That argument certainly makes sense, although I'd be interested in this year's breakdown. Maybe he's significantly quickened things up to the plate. Maybe he hasn't.

I do know the Reds were relying solely on a stop watch time on how long it took the ball to get from Street's hand to home. Dusty said as much in his post game comments.
