The Mudcats play the Lookouts in the second game of the series today at 2 o'clock. It will be interesting to see if Daryl Thompson can get beyond a handful of innings. Last time out the guy gets sick and leaves the game because of the heat. Would love to stay in the house and watch Wood pitch today on the tube but there is too much sun out to stay here.
We're planninig to be at the park for the first pitch today.

Thompson's 0-4 with a 3.54 ERA.

IF Carlos Mendez has been reassigned to the Mudcats from High-A Lynchburg. Mendez overtakes the roster spot of Eric Eymann, who was placed on the disabled list yesterday with a sprained right thumb.

The Mudcats' roster is at the Southern League limit of 24 players.

Dayton Dragons will try to bounce back from their big loss against Burlington last night. Jake Johnson will go against Keaton Hayenga. Hayenga has been god-awful so far this year (14.0H/9; 4.5BB/9; 4.0K/9; 0.88K/BB), so Dayton's odds are looking pretty good.

Brandon Yarbrough struck out.
Sean Danielson walked.
Jose Castro was HBP.
Daryl Thompson fielder's choice--runners on the corners with two outs.
Kris Negron singled, scoring Danielson and moving Thompson to second.
Felix Perez singled to load the bases.
Sean Henry doubled in two runs.
Mike Costanzo was HBP to load the bases.
Jake Kahaulelio grounded into a force out to end the inning.

5-1 Mudcats.

Daryl Thompson left after 3.1 innings. Lee Tabor is in now. I haven't yet heard why Thompson left the game.

So is Kris Negron actually a prospect? I was under the impression when we traded Gonzalez for him last year that he was just organizational filler?

He isn't a real good prospect, but he has some legit speed and should stay at SS. So he has some value and is more than a true organizational guy like Eric Eymann is. Perhaps a bench guy as an infielder/pinch runner one day.

The Reds like him a lot. He can stick at SS, has good speed and patience at the plate, and his intangibles are out of sight. He's more of a 25th man type of talent, but the same has been said about a lot of guys who turned out to be more.

edit:
^ Yeah, what dougdirt said.

I'm betting Perez is sharing time in LF with Heisey or CF with Stubbs next.
He's my position darkhorse to make the team coming out of ST though.

Could be:

LF Heisey/Dickerson
CF Stubbs/Perez
RF Bruce

That was my first thought, but it's pretty weird to send him out to face only one batter in the fourth inning.

I'm bullish on Perez too, but there is about a 0% chance that Gomes' option is not picked up for next year. I think he will battle Dickerson and Nix for that 5th outfielder spot.

Lee Tabor pitched 2.2 innings of shutout ball, and then Brad Boxberger just gave up a solo homer to the first batter he faced, Andrew Lambo.

Didn't realize Johnny had an option this year. You're probably right.

We just got home. The game was crawling and I had to get back here before too late.

Daryl Thompson is a problem. Two consecutive starts he has left early because of the heat. Yes, it was hot. It was hot for every guy in the lineup on both sides as well. It was hot where we sat. However, its like he has his mind made up he can't do it. He showed no signs of faltering and just stepped off the mound like, I'm done! Walks around behind the mound out toward second base and bends over and spits several times like he's been puking but hasn't, almost theatrical. He did the same thing last outing. I just don't see it, something's missing here. I'll stop short of calling the guy a fake, but man, this is getting old. Its like he's bucking to get out of the rotation. What he is doing is over working the bull pen. With him in the rotation the bullpen is having to go long every fifth day.

On another note, Felix Perez is looking good here. This guy hits the ball on the nose. I suspected Mez would get the day off and did. He is very deserving.

A nice outing for young Jacob Johnson today as Dayton wins, 6-2: 6.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 7 K. Ryan LaMarre homered. Gregorius and Oliveras had two hits each. Ezequiel Infante was sharp over the last 2.2 innings.

It sure seems that everything about Daryl Thompson screams reliever. Not sure what the holdup is.

Along those lines--muddie, what are your impressions of Jerry Gil? He is by no means a stopper in the bullpen, but it seems that he has made tremendous strides in the past year or so. Do you see much potential there?

Many talk about Mesoraco, but I am getting pretty excited about Cozart. The average is not spectacular, but he seems very consistent. The great defense, stolen bases, and pop in the bat with 12 hr's now would be a huge fix in the Reds shortstop hole. Does he have a shot starting next year with the Reds or is O Cab back for sure?

What about Janish, if you spent more time on the Sundeck you would realize that the difference between the 27 yankees and the current reds is Paul Janish.

:D :D :D
The same thing was true of using Chris Heisey over Drew Stubbs for a while, too.

Anyway, Cozart wouldn't have to be much more of an upgrade over Janish for the Reds to be set at shortstop for the next several years.

That tandem would most likely be better than Cabrera, but I don't think the Reds should settle for 'average'. I'm not saying it's a bad idea to give Cozart/Janish/Valaika/Negron a shot, but if there's a better alternative out there, the Reds should jump on it. As unrealistic as it is, I'd like to see the Reds try really hard to make a trade for someone of Jose Reyes' caliber.

Cozart is finding his bat now. His improvement is plain to see. He has a major league glove at SS and if this surge is real, will be an improvement for the Reds in 2011.

Nobody mentioned that LeCure ended with 13 Ks.

Our starting pitching situation right now is truly unthinkable considering what it has been for so long. Its tough to stay grounded when so many guys are performing this well, and there are more capable arms that are getting ready to come off the DL.

mace,

Gil has shown improvement, just since the beginning of this year. I almost lost it yesterday when they brought him in and he opened the ninth with seveen consecutive balls. He recovered and got the job done with no damage. He is more consistent than what he was earlier in the year.

Considering that he was an infielder until two years ago, it seems that his learning curve is pretty decent--good enough, possibly, that he could become a legitimate prospect by early next season or so. His performance yesterday sounds a lot like what Tabor did the night you had to leave early. (Speaking of which, I see that you posted at 3:43 a.m., which means you'd just gotten settled into your office at work . . . )
