Agreed, Cairo isn't flashy and doesn't have the "upside" that gets some fans all weak in the knees. But he's the kind of guy that helps you win ballgames.

Yeah I read some Cairo comments yesterday that just had me shaking my head. He has been extremely useful for this team. And I don't think anyone thought that would be the case out of spring training.

I think we underestimate how difficult it can be to be a spot starter never really getting regular at bats. Cairo has been very good at that this year.

The thing about the Reds lineup is, other than OC there's really not any weak spot in the lineup.

1-8 can all hurt you, and even OC can hurt you too.

Stubbs has been on fire over the last two weeks. IIRC over the last 10 or so games he has 5 HR's. That ups the OPS up quite a bit.

It's a shame, I think the Reds biggest need is SS, but I don't think there's a chance in hell we trade for one.

Me too, but the truth is that Jay has underachiieved while Stubbs has overachieved. I don't think Bruce will me more than an average OF. We expected that of Stubbs, but not Bruce.

As the 25th man, unless he puts up Albert Pujols #'s, he will never satisfy some.
The early season angst over Cairo was put to rest by most after the way he handled himself while stepping in for the injured Votto.

If he can locate that slider anywhere in the plate, he'll start generating swings and misses in the one in the dirt.

That, more than anything else, will fix the closer problem for the remainder of the season.

If Reds needed an arm to save a game on the 3rd day when CoCo isn't available they have the arms to do it. Rhodes, Bray, Smith, Masset, etc. They all have the ability to step in and save a game here and there.

Looks like, to the minute, he has 14 infield hits and his BA would be .247 without them. Not sure what difference it makes, but that's what my calculation is.

But when do you use him? You can always use the "what if we need him for the next 3 games" card. They may not have a save chance for the next month.

If I'm not mistaken Stubbs has a .316 BA and .680 slg% during home night games, and a .200 BA and .213 slg% in Away night games.

9 of his 13 HR's came during home night games.

A more respectable .255/.545 during away day games though.

83/293 on the year....I think Thom said he now has 16 on the year.

(.235 if it 14)

either way, that should give guys good reason to hustle as he's gotten several of those merely do to husting and beating them out by the the smallest margin possible.

Except Bruce is, despite his cold streak, still a league average hitter, and perhaps the best RF'er in the game. Please tell me how anyone could not consider him an above average OF?

8th out of 11th in terms of qualifying OPS in RF. He does have a great glove out there.

I'd cede you he has been an average player with his performance to date this year. That is all I can give you...not "above average".

Hart,Ethier,Heyward,Werth,Ludwick,Spillsbourgh/Hawpe,Upton are all better than him this year in my opinion. Do you dispute any of those.

8th best in the NL is not above average.

Cordero has been a new man since the ASB. Somebody got in his ear and got him to throw inside. It's made an amazing difference IMO. I know he allowed a walk last night, but even that was borderline. Him going inside like that TOTALLY keeps the hitters off balance and it makes his slider nearly unhittable. Kudos Francisco!

Anyone know what the attendance was last night? I ask 'cause I'm going tonight, and figure that it will be similar tonight to what it was last night due to similar circumstances- both weeknight games, crappy pitchers for the Nats, good pitchers for the Reds, no give-a-ways.

This really could be the perfect situation for Leake. After a long layoff (hadn't pitched since July 9), he only throws 69 pitches tonight, yet still gets the win (after getting screwed out of at least three wins this year including his previous start). All of a sudden, maybe the Reds can stretch Leake out longer into the season than many think. Skip a start occasionally, give him an extra day off between starts here and there, etc.
