Coming into today, Alonso's slash line:

.279/.321/.410 for a .731 OPS.

Not where we want it for AAA but it is trending in the right direction.

Coming into today, Juan's slash line:

.278/.315/.538 for a .853 OPS.

Coming into today, Cozart's slash line:

.265/.330/.450 for a .780 OPS.

Those three along with Dorn (awesome split against RHers) are the three position players most likely able to help the Reds down the stretch if need be, is my view.

FWIW, today Felix Perez is in LF for Carolina and Dave Sappelt is in CF. Since Perez arrived there, it's mostly been the other way around. And Sean Henry is in RF, which makes for a darn good AA outfield. All three had hits in the first inning, and Tom Cochran leads 1-0 after three.

Francisco HR leads off the Bats 4th, the game is now tied 1 -1 .

Carolina squandering chances all over the place, just came up with nothing from a bases loaded one out situation.

Down 2-1 after five.

No Mes today, Perez has two hits and has scored the lone Mudcat run. Sappelt also has two hits.

With two outs in the 6th , Dorn walks, Valaika double him in to tie the game, and Denove singles in Valaika to give the Bats a 3 - 2 lead.

Edit: And after a pitching change, a pinch hit home run with Michael Griffin! 5 - 2 Bats!!

Man, Carolina struggles. Down 3-1, with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Luis Terrero, pinch-hitting, singles to left. But only one run scores. Sappelt, who is very fast, held at third. And Yarbrough struck out. So they're still down, 3-2.

Michael Griffin goes back-to-back with Denove

8-3 Bats

Griffin has come out of nowhere to be a very solid contributor to the Bats.

Michael Griffin goes back-to-back with Denove. All three of their combined AAA home runs this year have come in this game!

Carolina loses 3-2.

As was posted earlier, tons of chances to put something across...didn't happen. Perez was 3-5 and scored twice. Very good noon time crowd of 4,262.

I should have mentioned:

The Bats have finally pulled back to .500 at 49-49.

It's been a long haul. To get there, they've had to go 13-4 since July 2.

Rick Sweet and his staff are excellent. He just deals with the consistent player moves with grace and humility and continues to win. This team will make the playoffs, watch.

The Bats continue to improve, it's funny how adverse the minor league team to the Reds. For the first half the Reds were reliant on pure offense while the pitching was struggling, and for the Bats it was just the opposite: the pitching was awesome but there was no offense. Now it seems the Reds are getting shut out every other game with great pitching, and the Bats offense has come alive.

Pretty good day for Klinker. Good to see he's having some success at AAA. Valiquette's numbers look good in this one as well.

Hotchkiss and Lynchburg lead 4-0 after five. Phipps has a HR and 3 RBIs. Hotchkiss has fanned 5 . . . Actually, he's now out of the game. His ERA is 2.20 . . . I hadn't noticed that Chris Richburg is now playing for Lynchburg (promoted from Dayton).

Lynchburg's bullpen (Christiani and Medina) lost the lead, and the game was tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the 8th. Neftali Soto led it off with a HR, and the Hillcats scored two more to win 7-4. Donnie Joseph closed in his usual style. Kevin Coddington was 3 for 3. Phipps was 3 for 4 with a big double in the eighth, in addition to his earlier HR.

The way he is going (and given his age) I wouldn't be totally shocked if Felix Perez ends the season in Louisville- especially if Gary Matthews Jr. decides to opt out of his contract this month.

Not saying it will happen, but I wouldn't rule it out. The guy is 25 years old, major league ready defensively and has been tearing the cover off the ball every chance he gets.

I could see the Reds wanting him to opt out to create Roster space for him at AAA. The OF Trio at Carolina (Perez, Sappelt and Henry) are all worthy of promotions to AAA if there was roster space and playing time available.

Perez hasn't yet shown that he can make adjustments once pitchers change their approach. I hope the next Carolina outfielder to get promoted is Sean Henry. My guess is that the Reds keep only one of Henry or Wladimir Balentien.

I'd keep Balentien over Henry without a doubt.

Both of them have the option of leaving the organization following the close of the season, but in order to keep either of them, the Reds will probably have to promise a lot of playing time. The more I think about it, there's a chance neither of them will still be here next season, but since Sean Henry is more of the 'organizational filler' type, he might stick around if the Reds promise a promotion to AAA.

MLB: Gomes, Stubbs, Bruce, Dickerson, Heisey
AAA: Francisco/Frazier, Perez (or Sappelt), Dorn (unless Alonso is traded), organizational filler (i.e. Luis Terrero, Sean Danielson, Josh Anderson, Mike Griffin etc.)
