No, I want to see you for once blame Bruce for doing something stupid or wrong instead of blaming someone else. The guy goes blowing past second base on a steal attempt and your first thought is to blame Dusty for running him. Then, when told of how the situation actually happened, you still blame Dusty. It makes no sense.

Alas, I will move on now. Considering there is a baseball game going on and we have a shot at first place, thanks largely to the managing of Dusty Baker.

I was wondering if they would hit for Wood. I'm ok with this. We have at least three guys who have yet to throw in the series, plus Jordan Smith only threw nine pitches yesterday. With a day off tomorrow, we can afford to use the pen a bit more today.

That's my logic and I"m sticking to it.

pitching change

GIDP
07-28-2010, 04:16 PM
I find it interesting that Dusty is pulling Wood here after only 5 but pushed Cueto to 122 pitches when he threw 7 the other night. Then the other night after 7 Arroyo stayed in when he had 80 some pitches.

I wonder what that is about. Seems wildly inconsistent. Especially when the bullpen was used so much yesterday, and that was used as a reason to why he let Cueto go so long.

Yea I mean at most the pen would have thrown 2 innings that game. Seems weird that the bullpen was so spent that they needed to put 22 extra pitches on Cueto. Who knows, I doubt Dusty really thought about it that much. I dont think he game plans all that much.

Actually, when you look at it, other than Ondrusek, not much of the pen was used. Yes, Fisher, Smith and Bray each pitched an inning, noe of them have many innings in the last week (Fischer 3, Bray 2, Smith three) and all have tomorrow off. The guys Dusty depends on, Cordero, Rhodes and Masset have yet to pitch in the series.

Assuming we were destined for a Masset, Rhodes Cordero 7,8 & 9, Wood was only pulled one inning early and at a time after a very long inning/break and when the at bat mattered.

I disagree. People have been complaining about his range all season, so I have been watching for balls through the left side of the infield and they just arent happening all that often... in fact in the last week Ocab has snagged balls on the other side of 2nd as well as way behind the 3B. (Side note, the Reds on the other hand, seem to get a hit through the left side at least once a game)

I dont know anything about how they keep statistics to determine a "range factor" but if you are seeing hits through the left of the infield with any level of regularity, please point them out.

I do know that folks that know a little bit about infield defense, including range, like Joe Morgan talked about Ocab as an excellent defender. I trust Joe's assessment (who has been known to be critical when its deserved) more than a fans.

sabermetrics says otherwise. He's one of the lowest rated shortstops defensively.

The "range" factor is a product of the number of plays per nine innings. For example if Derek Jeter played for a team with all fly ball pitchers, but made every single play within 50 feet of him, if it were only only one or two plays a game he would have the lowest possible range factor in his defensive evaluation.

As critics have noted, "it does a better job of measuring fielding opportunities than fielding prowess".

Lack of range is the same critque we heard about Alex Gonz when he was a Red... a player the second best team (by record) in the NL just added for his defense.

GIDP
07-28-2010, 04:42 PM

I think its because Dusty loves Cabrera more than it has to do with anything Cairo has done. Its just funny how little playing time Janish has had that the other back up infielder has made more starts at 1 position that the other has made total the whole season.

texasdave
07-28-2010, 04:46 PM
From Fayblog:
exactly 20 years later (August 3, 1989), Rolando Roomes, Todd Benzinger and Jeff Reed each had four hits for the Reds.

Figure the odds of that trio each coming up with four hits in the same game. A gazillion to one maybe?

Reed hit .223 that year.
Benzinger hit .245 that year.
Roomes hit .263 that year.

dusty has played janish at third before, not just shortstop. janish doesnt get the starts because o-cab has" a little more tread on the tires" and cairo is hitting in his starts for rolen

sabermetrics says otherwise. He's one of the lowest rated shortstops defensively.

Among 21 qualified starting SS's

UZR says he is 4th best in all of baseball.

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=ss&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=1&season=2010&month=0

Range Runs says he is 13th is saving runs on balls in the league average range

Double play runs says he is 4th best in turning double plays

Error runs says he is 4th best in giving up runs via errors

Conclusion: Sabermetrics do not say otherwise.

It will take a while to forget that "lesson". At that time, however, I didn't give the Braves the credit that they deserved, they're playing some inspired baseball in ATL.

The Reds have tried to sac twice this road trip from what I can remember. Neither of those batters ended up getting out, and I believe both of them scored runs. Bruce got a hit after a failed sac bunt, then Leake drew a walk after a failed sac bunt.

I hope Dusty took notice.

The bullpen we're worried about has worked a scoreless series (last nt. and tont.)

Good point... the pen has actually done some very good work.

Masset now has nine straight appearances without a run, Jordan Smith has six, Cordero has 5, and Ondrusek has 15.

That's four of seven relievers on scoreless streaks, and that does not include Rhodes.
