The organization is turning out a lot of great pitching -- both starting and relieving -- right now. Makes Jocketty's job a hell of a lot easier if he doesn't have to give up valuable trading chips for middle relief.

So was that another example of a bad defender making that rare good play?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Gomes isn't as bad as many make him out to be.

That wasn't a good play though. That was a bad play aided by bad baserunning.

Gomes let the ball roll around in the corner. He should've been able to get to it and hold the runner to a double. However, Gomez/the 3rd base coach were equally wrong to send the runner and Gomes came up with it in time to make the throw at third.

That was bad defense that turned out good. Paint it how you want but this is a situation were a better defender would probably end up with a slightly worse result for his team. That the other team made a baserunning error is great for the Reds but there's no way to call the initial play "good."

Just saw this post from the Leake at-bat. It made sense to me to use Leake there. The Reds had a three-run lead with runners at the corners and nobody out. Nix had already been used. Dusty would prefer not to use Rolen unless he absolutely had to. He also wasn't going to use Ramon, since he's the backup catcher today. I think that Dusty was thinking that he would like the flexibility to use Stubbs as a defensive replacement later in the game. He could have used Janish, but he was the only backup middle INF, and depending on Rolen's availability the only backup INF period. Additionally, Leake can hit (batting .366 and OPS'ing over .800).

Where you headed tonight?

No idea, my brother lives out here and we're going out for dinner somewhere.

And it's pretty easy/quick, believe it or not.

My wife has it pretty good. She gets meals like this every night for dinner. On rare occasion I don't feel like cooking, but for the most part, it's like this. For instance, the other night I made homemade sesame chicken w/ a side of steamed rice and stir-fry veggies. Made for some killer leftovers to boot!

And here I was thinking I was a rarity. I do nearly all the cooking in our house too. My wife hates to cook. She can do Spaghetti, sort of (Ragu *grin*) and that's about it. :O)

Looked like the Brewers threw in the towel in the ninth inning.

Said it yesterday...one of the most underacheiving franchises over the past decade...I thought that talent would net 1 World Series for them.

Pitching. They don't have any and they haven't hand any for the past decade. It should look strikingly familiar to Reds fans. Lineup of bombers, but not an arm in sight.

Congrats to Travis Wood -- the first many I hope to see him have in a Reds uni.

Let us never take Votto for granted. Just another 3 hit day with a bomb.

Quality game thread, folks!

I am encouraged by Dusty's willingness to go to the bullpen earlier in the last two games. When September comes and the Reds have more arms available, it will be important that he uses them.

Just a heads up...the Reds have 6 games against the Brewers the last 2 weeks of the season.

Think of that what you will.

The Reds have a very favorable schedule after September 9th. Here's how it goes:

Home

Pirates 3 games
Arizona 4 games
Astros 3 games
Brewers 3 games

Away

Astros 3 games
Brewers 3 games
Padres 3 games

Padres are the ony winning team on the schedule the last 3 weeks of the season. If the Reds could be in 1st place by September 10th they would only have themselves to blame if they didn't win the division,IMO.

I thought the same thing. They look a lot like the 2006 Reds. Good hitting but horrid pitching. Except for the year they had Sabbathia and a healthy Ben Sheets there pitching most years has been very bad.

Throw another W in my column for the game thread standings.

Also would like to apologize to my company for my 103 posts in the game thread yesterday, showing I got absolutely nothing done at work yesterday.

Just a heads up...the Reds have 6 games against the Brewers the last 2 weeks of the season.

Think of that what you will. Are you thinking of the 1999 Reds with Jason Bere putting a "curse" on the Reds for releasing him (he then went to Milwaukee). The Reds go to Milwaukee for the last games of the season and lose 2 of 3 (the only winning game has Harnisch the winner after a 5+ hour rain delay).
