He's gotta get hot sometime. (Is it a lefty throwing against them?) What surprises me about the Bats' lineup is that Valaika has been hitting around .300 all year and, with so many guys slumping for so long, has never really gotten a shot at the top of the order. You figure a lot of that stuff must come from the organization. At any rate, I'm not gonna complain about Rick Sweet. I think he's a terrific manager.

Dickerson is definitely ready to be called out as he runs himself into another out. I think he did anyway. He reached first on catcher's interference. Stole second but then somehow was out at third. Recap is not real clear on that. In any case that is the third time in the last two games Dickerson has been erased on the basepaths. Maloney has pitched two scoreless frames so far, giving up one hit and striking out two. No score after an inning and a half.

Juan Francisco with a seven pitch K. It looks like he definitely fouled off ball four with the count full. He did take three pitches out of the zone for balls.

Balentien with a two-out single.
Sutton Ks. The Charlotte pitcher with 3 Ks in the inning.

Lynchburg gives up a run in the bottom of the second to halve their lead to 2-1. In the top of the third they break out the heavy lumber as Puckett, Soto and Richburg all go yard. Lynchburg leads 6-1.

1-2-3 fifth for Maloney. He does throw a lot of pitches though. 85 pitches through 5 and he hasn't walked anyone and given up just 2 hits. 17 batters. Five pitches a batter.

Valaika draws a two-out walk. Miller up. Both Miller and Dickerson have reached on Catcher's Interference tonight. That is unusual.

First, Owens had to arrive. It wasn't as easy as planned.

The Bengals expected him to arrive early in the day, take his physical and sign his one-year contract while the rest of the team held its first workout. They scheduled an introductory news conference after the morning practice.

The news conference had to be rescheduled for after the evening session because Owens missed his red-eye flight.

On his Twitter account, Owens had posted a note Wednesday night saying he was headed to see a movie. He didn't explain why he missed his overnight flight.

Mudcats win was a nice walk off against prospect Jose Ceda. Sapp lead off the bottom of the 9th trailing 2-1 and hit a solo shot to tie it. Ceda rebounded and got two outs but then imploded. With the bases loaded, infielder Jose Castro got a base hit to score the winning run.

Also, Perez, who was injured after crashing into the outfield wall yesterday, was not in the line up today will be placed on the 7-day disabled list.

I'm loving Hamilton's progress this season, if it continues the rest of the season he's gonna make quite a cliimb up the prospect list. Next year's top 40 will have some interesting choices.

Juan Duran went 3-for-5 with a HR (#3) and 3 RBI. Duran is hitting .286/.353/.429 - .782 OPS in 77 atbats in July. Eye popping numbers? No. Encouraging? Yes. He's showing signs of progressing. He's extremely talented and has significant upside but he's also extremely raw and will require patience.

Billy Hamilton had another good game as well as he went 3-for-5 and stole his 16th base. Hamilton is now hitting .315/.373/.438 - .811 OPS in 146 atbats this season.

how old is Duran 18, he could use another year in Billings, no need to rush this talent IMO

From Baseball America:

Considering Travis Wood's success in the big leagues as a fill-in for Homer Bailey and Edinson Volquez's return to the Reds' rotation, LHP Matt Maloney, 26, is further from a big league starting job now than he was at the beginning of the season. That seems almost unfair, as Maloney pitched well in two big league starts this season (after a successful September callup last year). But all that he can do for now is dominate the International League, something he's been doing a pretty good job of all season. In two starts this week, Maloney went 2-0, 0.66 for Triple-A Louisville, lowering his ERA for the season to 2.91

I just recently posted a link to an article that mentioned Ceda. He's a legit prospect. The guy is freaking huge--listed at 275 pounds!

Jose Ceda, RHP, Marlins (AA)—Ceda was acquired from the Cubs for Kevin Gregg prior to the ’09 season and was tabbed as Florida’s closer of the future. He put up some silly numbers in the low minors, like allowing just 14 hits in 46 1/3 innings in Low-A in 2007.
Ceda got sidetracked by arm problems as soon as he joined his new organization in 2009, however. He would miss the entire year and, like Banuelos, the opening part of 2010.
The 23-year-old is finally back, though, and he’s still throwing triple-digit bullets and wipeout sliders. He’s allowed just nine hits and two runs in 18 Double-A innings, striking out 28 batters.
Ceda, who is built like Jonathan Broxton and has similar stuff, just needs to throw strikes. He’s walked just eight batters in 18 innings this year, which is pretty good for a pitcher with a history of control problems who missed over a year. As long as he can keep his walks to about one every two innings, Ceda should be an intimidating closer for Florida as soon as April 2011.
