Looks like this will be my first thread ever started.

Homer is dealing. 6 innings, 2 h, 2 bb, 3 k, 77 pitches as the Bats are up 6-0.

Miller: 1-for-2 HBP

Cozart is up to .787 OPS I think if my math is correct.

Going into this one, the Bats had won 8 in a row, 11 out of 12, 21 out of 25. That's serious.

Corky Miller is a phenom.

Has anyone with the Reds spoken yet on when they expect to do something with Dickerson?

Almost wonder if the Reds would think about bringing up Dickerson and letting Stubbs figure things out at AAA for awhile. This would allow Heisey and Dickerson to get some time in CF.

The DSL Reds won today, 7-0, behind 6-foot-4, 202-pound, 19-year-old righthander Eliezer Beard.

His line: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K.

His season: 46.1 IP, 32 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 15 BB, 25 K. ERA 1.17.

A pretty good hitter on that team (other than Carlos Sanchez) has been 18-year-old outfielder Brayan Arias, whose 2-for 3 day put him at .329, with an OBP of .424.

I think the Reds are doing a disservice to Stubbs growth at this point. The kid is striking out one out of every three AB's. He needs a break. I would love to see Dickerson get a shot at center with Heisey, mix it up. Some change needs to happen with Stubbs. This 'wait and see' isn't working.

With Votto and Rolen getting on base as much as they do, and Gomes slumping (and not driving them in as frequently as he did early in the year), the lineup is squandering too many scoring chances by leaving it to Bruce and Stubbs back-to-back. I think Stubbs needs a break, as has been said, and I'd love to see Bruce moved to the 2-hole in the lineup. That way, he'd see a lot of strikes with Votto behind him, and he'd have less pressure to drive in runs. Plus, I think Cabrera would do a better job of bringing home the baserunners.

Long term solution for this club is to get Yonder Alonso, Joey Votto, and Jay Bruce in the lineup every day. How to do that is Walt and Dusty's job.

At this point, the only way that's happening is if the franchise is relocated to the American League.

I wouldn't go that far. I still think there is an outside chance that Alonso winds up in left field. He honestly can't be much worse than Gomes out there and they run him out there every day. If Alonso keeps hitting well (he has been absolutely on fire in July with an OPS pushing 1.100), I think the Reds will think long and hard about that move.

And when exactly did Alonso start playing LF this year, was it in spring training or in a winter league...or was it after the season started? I think he's athletic enough, and he's driven, that he could be serviceable in LF if he works on it during the offseason and through ST 2011.

I have seen Yonder play LF and folks it ain't pretty. He would not be an upgrade over Gomes in LF from a defensive stand point. He would need some pretty consistent reps and winter ball training to even become somewhat serviceable to this team as an outfielder. First base is his best and only position.

There was a play at the plate last night with Lorenzo Scott (who took out a Mudcats catcher last year as well)
He won't start tomorrow (Deno is) but should return during the road trip (which starts Monday)
They are taking extra precautions with him.

Homer looked good but I've seen him better. FB was around 94-95 and off-speed around 83. Short bursts of loss of control and too many well hit balls caught by Dickerson. But he pitched well. Del Rosario looked bad and was the only cylinder that didn't seem to be firing tonight.

Oh, and Corky is very slow. ;)

Everyone thought Dorn's double was a grand slam and Sweet argued it but no dice.

There were about 4 balls that were very close to going out but just missed. Cisco hit two off the wall.

If there's any such thing as good news for Dayton, which lost its 10th straight game tonight, 2-1, it was the pitching line for 19-year-old Jacob Johnson: 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. Johnson, in fact, has the Dragons' only victory since July 9. Since then, they're 1-17. Remarkable.

Nice to see Kyle Lotzkar turn in a strong outing (in relief): 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. He followed Wes (or John; which is it?) Mugarian's two-inning start: 2 IP, 1 H 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K. Mugarian, taken in the fifth round, was the Reds' highest-drafted high school kid this year.

The Arizona Reds are tied 1-1 after six.

Its pretty alarming to think what the Bats record would be right now if Frazier and Alonso did not have poor starts and Dorn and Francisco were not hurt. I am not sure what the major league outlook will be for some of them but for a minor league team that is a pretty stout lineup.

OPS' in July:

Dickerson........(1.182)
Alonso.............(1.087)
Balentien.........(1.007)
Dorn..............(1.023)
Francisco........(1.055)
C.Miller...........(1.029)
Cozart...........(.932)
Valaika...........(.849)

Those numbers may or may not have counted today (such as Alonso's 2 Doubles and a Homerun might raise his OPS to 1.106 for July).

It's easy to dismiss him because he has never been known as a hitter but he has really contributed to the Bats offense (and defense) this season:

Griffin.......(.843)

Scrap Irony
08-01-2010, 02:08 AM
Those OPSes would look good on a slow pitch softball team.

Of the eight Bat starters, two (Alonso and Cozart) would make the 2011 Reds much better. And three more could help in reserve roles, not to mention as AAA depth in case of injury.

Add in David Sappelt and Devin Mesoraco in AA and the Reds have an answer for every offensive position injury that should play as above replacement, at least.

Solid.

I lived in Louisville 30 years ago from the end of August to the beginning of November. Wish I was there now.

Yeah. I love what Alonso brings to the table. The guy, when healthy, can absolutely rake. He is a pure hitter. But for the next three years, he isn't beating out Votto unless Votto gets seriously hurt and teams can't really plan on that. I would still like to see a little more of him in left field because of his bat, but if the Reds do trade him, it isn't like they are playing Scott Hatteberg at first right now.
