I missed the first half of the game. How in the world did the Braves NOT score more runs with 5 freaking walks from Edinson? Wow.

Was it a tight zone, or was he simply wild?

Didn't he say he felt fine the other day?

I suppose -- but he's already been gone over 30 days, I'm just looking logically at the roster if they want to create room.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see DRH gone from the 40 man. There's probably about 5 people ahead of him on the bullpen depth chart (Springer, Izzy, Burton, Chapman, Fisher), and when you add in his recent legal troubles and ineffectiveness when on the team I don't think it's a tough call to just let him be on his way.

RedsManRick

It's not a question of that. Umpires aren't superhuman. When a pitcher has good command, the umpire's going to get a lot better look at a much higher percentage of the pitches.

Curious -- how does any umpire know where any pitch is going anyways? Is he following the catcher? I guess I don't understand how much of judging a pitch is guessing where it's going to go before it's thrown versus reacting to the pitch that is thrown.

He was a basically wild. A few questionable calls but it was mainly Volquez struggling with his control.

Does anyone know Cairo's splits between pinch hitting and starting? He seems to be the opposite of Heisey in that regard. He's great when he starts and sucks as a PH. That's the way it seems in my head, but I haven't checked the stats to verify it...I've been wrong before. :D

Do you think umpires working Tom Glavine's games couldn't confidently look for 75 pitches within about an 8 inch slot on the outside part of the plate against right handers? Umpires learn pitchers, just like hitters are supposed to, except they have the advantage of seeing a whole lot more pitches.

Cordero comes through with a great pitch to break Infante's bat and coax an easy grounder back to the mound. I hated to see him pitching, but he came through with that pitch.

Reds need to sweep the Pirates, then I'll be happy with two of three from the Cubs. They need a 5-1 road trip against two bad teams before the Cardinals series.

Outfield 0-10 today. Rest of the team 5-20. Thank goodness for the charity of the Atlanta defense. Pitching - 9 innings allowing 4 hit and one earned run. Excellent pitching despite the 7 walks.

Cordero pitched really well today. No nibbling, went right after Diaz and amazingly avoided the walk, and even with the dribbler by Heyward, no one really hit the ball hard off him.

Volquez is making progress. He had a little more command today, esp. on the fastball, but until he is able to consistently throw strikes, the opponent is going to try to wait him out and run up his pitch count. Other than the BP changeup to Gonzalez, no one centered all day.

Bray is what he is. He will never be anymore than he is. Same pitcher now as before surgery, which is occasionally unhittable, but all too often is all over the place. I wouldn't waste a roster spot on him past this season.

Agree with all that. Encouraged by EV and Cordero was better. Bray won't last long with all the guys coming from AAA. I'm guessing we may see Chapman before the Cards series.

I agree. Trouble is they will have him the roster because he is a left hander who can occasionally look brilliant. Besides, he'd be the last survivor of The Trade on the Reds, right?

In the meantime Lopez is playing for the rival Cardinals, and Kearns is playing for the Yankees. Sometimes life isn't fair.

Yep. 2 of every 3 from here on out not only wins the division, it gets them home field advantage. It's baseball, you don't have to sweep until you have to win every game.

The Reds have lost MANY games this season they "should" have won, so I'm more than happy to take a win in a game maybe they "shouldn't" have won :).

Of course the Reds don't have to win all three games in Pittsburgh this week but it would sure make up for getting swept by the Pirates earlier this season.
