What in the world? After 10 pm and there's only one post on the minor-league game thread? Everybody must have been captivated by Travis Wood. Man, what's not to love about that guy? Among other things, I don't believe I've ever seen a pitcher topple over the rail of the dugout chasing a fly ball.

But I digress . . .

Mudcats/Stars tied 3-3 top nine. Henry on second, 2 outs. Deno up.

Three nice young pitching prospects did well today as the DSL Reds won, 7-5, moving 9 games over .500 at 30-21. (The fourth pitcher allowed three of the runs in 1/3 of an inning.)

Jose Guzman (18, RH): 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K . . . ERA 2.27

The Dragons broke their infinity losing streak. 2-1 over the hapless White Caps. Shunick pitched well in his debut, Didi, Rodriguez, and LaMarre with the runs and RBI's.

Shunick is impressing. Also, two great innings of closing relief from Doug Salinas: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K.

Henry Rodriguez had a game-tying HR in the seventh.

He pitched decently last year but was outstanding for Dayton in 2008, both starting and relieving. And he's left-handed. I've never seen him pitch, but he seems to profile a lot like Matt Fairel, who profiles a lot like Matt Maloney. Travis Wood has become the organizational poster boy for that type of lefty . . . but I don't dare include him in the comparisons. (Wood is pretty special.)

Agreed. If his talent catches up with his tools, he could be on the fast path. Putting up a very similar line as Dee Gordon did as a 20 Year old in the same league.

The Huntsville/Carolina game only drew a recorded 570 people last night. I know Huntsville generally is near the bottom on attendance in the SL but this is very weak to be AA.

Dayton should be a AA or AAA level franchise with attendance in the 8000's. I know they don't fit as far as AA goes regionally, but they do as a IL team. So many teams above High A that just don't draw. They should reward the teams that do.

Which would then relegate Cincinnati's AAA team, Louisville, to another parent club.

The same Louisville squad that has perennially drawn attendance numbers among the best in the minor leagues.

Sounds like they get good attendance. Whats the problem again?

Changing classifications is a very difficult thing. It doesn't make much business sense and the owners of these teams are, in the end, businessmen looking to maximize the return on their investment. For Dayton to become, say, a Double-A team, the owners would have to purchase an Eastern League franchise ($10-12 million or more) and relocate that team to Dayton. Then they would have to find another Midwest League city (with a good stadium) to move the Dragons franchise. All of that with no real increase in attendance (revenue) really expected. So they would be spending money to do it, then not generating much extra. Again, their number one goal is return on investment. Very unlikely you will see it happen.

As Dayton was trying to break its 11-game losing streak last night, Henry Rodriguez got himself ejected from the game in the top of the ninth inning with Dayton leading 2-1 for arguing a called third strike with the bases empty. Dayton, of course, did win the game, but too many examples of things like this from Henry this season. It will be interesting to see if he plays tonight. Henry has been the anti-Miguel Rojas in some ways this season. Too much talent to be making bonehead or lazy plays. There is a reason this team is 9-26 (many reasons actually, of course).

Next year the talent in Dayton could be the best that's been there in 10 years. It also could be alot of kids overmatched at the A level and fall flat on their faces again. Next year could be interesting. Will Benzinger and Griffey still be there after this season is the question.
