Jacob Johnson: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K, 7 GO/3 FO

Jacob Johnson has made tremendous progress during the course of the season. redsof72 remarked on another thread that Johnson is highly regarded within the organization for his maturity and coachability, etc. It's not much of a stretch to point to that as a basis for his considerable improvement between April and August. Consider, also, that he's only one year out of high school and the Reds chose to place him in Dayton, ahead of the likes of Daniel Tuttle and Tyler Cline. Put it all together, and I think Johnson should almost certainly be a top-40 guy this year, and possibly challenge for the upper half.

I think we'll soon find out if Chapman's on his way to the major leagues. He hasn't pitched in three days so I would guess he's scheduled to pitch tonight. If he doesn't pitch then it could be a sign that he's on his way to Chicago...

What a season Jordan Hotchkiss is having.

Tonight: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K . . . With that, his WHIP for the season slips just under 1.00 . . . ERA 2.39 . . . At this point, he might be the top candidate for organizational Pitcher of the Year.

Justin Freeman and Donnie Joseph (probably the other top candidate for Pitcher of the Year) again do the job, and Lynchburg wins 2-1. Denis Phipps homered.

Dayton closed it out, 3-0. In addition to Johnson's excellent start, there was great work to close by Doug Salinas: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K.

Don't disagree, but it's worth noting that while there has been a chorus for Joseph's promotion for quite a while now, nobody has mentioned Hotchkiss in the same context. Consider that 1) Hotchkiss, unlike Joseph, has spent the whole season in Lynchburg, 2) Hotchkiss is nearly two years older, and therefore needs to be making his moves, and 3) Hotchkiss, other than strikeouts, actually has slightly better numbers than Joseph.

There's a chance that those two--and Justin Freeman--could really give Carolina a boost as the Mudcats push for the playoffs in the second half.

As wretched as that bullpen has been all year--as many leads as it has squandered late in the game--it's really a shame for the starting pitchers and rest of the team. A thing like that can demoralize a ballclub. To say nothing of the fan base.

Not disagreeing with you mace or anything. Thanks for bringing up Hotchkiss. He deserves it.

They've been "stretching" Hotchkiss out. This was his 3rd time now to where he finished the 7th inning. He's learning how to pitch like a veteran where he's at. He's developing some good skills where he's at. They've made an excellent decision to keep him where he's at so far.

Billlings rolled, 8-2. Tyler Cline lowered his ERA to 2.17. And Drew Hayes has now pitched 9 innings without giving up a run; three hits.

So we called up Fisher instead of Chapman.

Awesome.

Has Fisher been down for 10 days?

Regardless, I don't think he is up long. Plus, with Volquez's propensity to be, how do I put it nice, not very pitch efficient, Fisher's ability as a long man could be a more valuable piece to have in the bullpen Saturday.

Has Fisher been down for 10 days?

If it's an injury it negates the 10-day rule.

Out of town for the weekend so can't follow as closely as I'd like. I did look over last nights box scores and would have loved to have been at the game in Kinston. Back to back nights the Indians got the Freeman/Joseph show. Jordan Hotchkiss was money as well.

Carolina is in dire need of bullpen help and to be honest, beyond Klinker and Cochran, the starters are unpredictable. It is looking like the Mudcats will not make an appearance in the playoffs for the second year in a row. To what degree this will be a discussion topic on renewing the affiliation with Cincy, I don't know.

Louisville is on a tear!

The big question is will Sapp be back in Double-A? Does he deserve to be? No. He deserves to be in Trips, and there could be a good chance for him to be there. I personally want Perez to stay in Double-A. Yes, he's older but he's very inexperienced as far as Pro ball is concerned. I think keeping Perez in Double-A next year to start, especially with his current injury keeping him out for over a week, would be the best case.

As for Lutz, he won't be back until June at least as he has had his second Tommy John surgery in late June or July (can't remember exactly when)

The Reds currently don't have a pure center fielder more ready for AAA than Sappelt. There are only two things that could keep him in AA at the start of next season:
1.) an off-season acquisition
2.) optioning one of Dickerson, Heisey, or Stubbs

Sometimes the DSL Reds' score is not posted until well after midnight. That was the case last night, which means we missed the Reds throwing a 1-hitter to win 5-1. It was the Reds' eighth win in a row and it put them 13 games over .500 at 34-21.

Eliezer Beard continued to dominate without striking out very many: 6 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K. He now has an ERA of 1.22. He's 19 years old and 6-foot-4, 202.

Carlos Ramos finished. In 27 innings, he has permitted one earned run, a ludicrous ERA of 0.33. He, too, is 19.

Carlos Sanchez, a short, left-handed first baseman, went 4 for 4. He's now hitting .355 with a .450 OBP and .940 OPS. Curiously (since he's not playing in the VSL), he's from Venezuela.
