Well given that it's the last trip in to FLA for the Cardinals, they probably very much want to get the game in. Plus even if it's 4 hours before it starts, that means the game ends at 11:30 or 12. Not such a big deal with a night game tomorrow.

I am going out on a limb here and predict that after the game Bailey is called up to start on Tuesday. Cueto is moved up to Monday and Leake is sent down. The reason for not announcing this sooner was to get through the rotation and be certain that a starter did not have to go to the DL.

I think Chapman for Bray is 50-50 because breaking in against the Cardinals in an important series is added pressure. I think it is equally likely that Chapman does not come up until the Florida series.

And then watch Dusty trot Fisher out there and have him get lit up and watch Dusty get ripped on.

Remember the Nationals game with Owings?

Maybe, but conserving IP for Wood, Leake and Cueto has to be a priority. With no anchor for a play-off rotation, Wood especially is a guy I'd like to see make it to the post-season with something left in the tank. I doubt Leake can stay that long regardless, but Wood has a chance and he's the team's best starter at this point. Lacking an acquisition to nail down a spot, I want him available in October.

Don't think so. They have a lot of faith in Leake. And the last thing I want to see is Homer Bailey starting a game in this important series. Sorry, but I just don't.

Thats your opinion, as well as Verducci's. Its not everyones. I'm not going to get into this too much because its a game thread, but the guy has been on a 5 man rotation for 5 years now. You think he wasn't throwing when he was injured in the minors to get back?

Absurd. Absolutely absurd. At what point should he have been pulled? You brought this up when Soriano hit one to the Ivy. At that point he had faced 5 batters in the inning. How many pitches should they limit him to in that position? Anything over 10 and he's out? What should his pitch count have been?

Actually I first mentioned in in post 321 of this thread before Soriano got to the plate.

He's not a rookie, and he has done pretty okay against the Cardinals before.

He pitched seven innings of shutout ball with 9 Ks and 0 BBs in his last AAA rehab start.

I wouldn't mind that from the team if they went that route. I love what Leake has given the team this year (and when they needed it badly too, with EV out to start the year), but I fear Leake is at the wear-down point. I really don't like the match-up between him and that Cards line-up...

He could have gone more today, pitchwise. If he escapes that jam there, he could go 8 or 9 and save the pen for the biggest series in the last 10 years. Its not like you're overusing him, pitchers should expect to go at least 100 pitches every game, or they're not getting the job done, unless they throw a complete game before they reach that.

OK. Different beliefs I guess. I think an inning saved today is more in the tank for October. I want these guys not only available but not gassed when the play-offs role around. Not really worrried about saving Fisher and Bray for St. Louis. I don't think they should have brought in Rhodes or anything. That's a reasonable thought. My only problem with this line of thinking is it could essentially be extended so that Wood doesn't throw more than 70 or 60 or 50 pitches in any start.

It's one thing to worry about pitch counts when a guy is struggling with command and has thrown 90 to 100 pitches. Wood went into the 7th having thrown 58 pitches. If you don't pull him there, than I fail to see why you pull him after 4 batters and maybe 12 pitches. At least based on pitch counts by themselves.

He was getting lit up which is the reason I had no problem with him being pulled, but lets not act like sending a guy out with fewer than 60 pitches is going to kill his arm in October.

mth123
08-08-2010, 05:23 PM
A couple other things about Wood today. It was his first time facing a team for a second time and he was pretty darned good. That is a great sign. Its also the second time he's taken a no-no fairly deep into a game and looked completely composed after losing it. That composure is enough for me to raise my expectations for him. Kid's gonna be a good pitcher I think. Gotta keep him healthy.

If he's pitching well in a close game and has a normal pitch count, of course you leave him in as opposed to going to a lesser middle inning arm. But when it's 8-1 after the homer, and the no-no and shut-out aren't milestones for the manager to leave him in to achieve, I say save the innings for later and give the mop-up guys some work.

Wood is not even throwing close to the same amount of pitches Bailey was a year ago in his starts. I understand being careful but this over the top.
The pitches thrown is more important than innings to me.

When I see bruce hit....I think he needs to stand a little closer to the plate and maybe those pitches that look like balls...which are really strikes...would be hit. He stands far off the plate and takes those pitches when they are strikes.
