Baseball Tonight suspects an elbow injury from seeing the coverage of him on the mound. I can see that because he sure seems like he's trying to shake off something with his elbow. I hate the hype that's surrounded this kid because it's been WAY overdone all year but I do hope he's all right. I don't like to see guys suffer injuries. :(

I gathered, just seeing the reports, that after shaking his arm he was embracing his wrist because of the pain being sent through his forearm. That would probably be an indication of an elbow injury but I could see how any observer would think, from a distance, it was a wrist injury.

Was just looking at the schedule for September (because I'm going to GABP, hooray!) and maybe this has been covered, but there's a stretch there that's pretty brutal. All I've heard about is how easy the Reds have it at the end of the season, but competition quality notwithstanding, they don't have a day off between the 3rd and the 22nd, with an annoying four-game stretch in Colorado stuck in between stints in St. Louis and Cincinnati. Then, right after that one day off, they go from Milwaukee to San Diego for a whopping three games.

This is quite tough at the end of the season when there's a chance they'll still be playing in hot weather. Count me unsettled.

Scratching out a series win on the Coast against a really tough pitcher like Kershaw after an offensive beat down the night before is exactly what the Doctor ordered to keep things rolling along at 20-over.

Need to figure out a way to do the same for at least one more win in SF and then call it a tremendously successful trip of death. 1 win in SF and I am actually happy, 2 wins would make me ecstatic as that might essentially bury the Giants as a WC threat to the Reds.

With back-back debacles in St Louis the last two games. the Giants know that these three games are vital as they slip behind Philly in the WC as their division chances are all but gone. The Reds will have to earn everything they get over the next three days.

These next three games are going to be extremely tough. The Giants have had a rough schedule recently, and they've gotten knocked around. They've watched the Padres run off a bit with the division, and they've watched the Phillies run off a bit with the wildcard. They'll be fighting for their lives to pull out wins before falling too far back, and I expect the Reds to be in a dog fight each of the three games.

I'm hoping for two of three, but I would grudgingly be mildly content with just one. The Reds just have to make absolute certain to win at least one game and not get swept.

I think you are spot on. Time is growing near for them to go all in with everything and we might just be the recipient.

As you said, 2 of 3 would be awesome, but if you'd have told me we'd go 6-3 on this trip before it started I'd have asked where I needed to sign up for that, so I can live with 1 of 3.

Your basically saying that a winning Aug. west coast road trip in the middle of a pennant race isn't good enough.I have to agree though.Sweeping Arizona and getting 2/3 from L.A. changes things.I'm hoping for 2/3 against S.F. and feeling 1 win is a must, although I'm much happier that the 1 win would represent the 6th win of this trip instead of the 3rd or 4th and won't jump of a cliff if it doesn't happen. We'd still be in 1st place after all.

After the Cards Series Debacle, we all just hoped that when we came back from the west cost trip we'd be within spittin' distance of the Cards, so we would have some chance down the stretch.

That will clearly be the case.

I don't think we can now be satisfied with just a winning road trip, as we are currently 5-1.

The Giants aren't playing all that well right now, so we should be hoping for a 2-1 finish to our trip. it will be tough, but we seem to be winning most of our series, so why hope for less now.

If we get swept, we get swept. We will still be in first regardless, and that's even if the Cards win all 3 while we are losing.

The Cards are at the beginning of a 17 in 20 game raod trip.

Let's see if they can duplicate our road success, something they haven't been able to do this year yet.

Now that a game has been scheduled for 9/20, the Cards only have one day off for the rest of the season. It will be a long stretch for the Cards with a lot of road games coming up.

Yesterday was the first time in awhile that Garcia pitched without extra rest, and he had his best game of the year. He needs to keep that up, because there won't be much of a chance to rest him for the rest of the year.

The real concern for the Cardinals, right now, should probably be their bullpen. That's an awful lot of days to go with no breaks, especially the way LaRussa likes to play chess. The expanding roster will help, but the key guys are still going to be logging a lot of consecutive outings and be up and throwing on a lot of days.

Do the Cards have anything in AAA that could spell real relief for September? I don't mean a pitcher to throw some meaningless innings in a blowout, but guys that can really help take some bullpen innings in situations where the game hasn't been decided or offer key pinch hitting opportunities or days to spell starters?

I don't know the Cards system to know well enough, but IIRC they're not very deep. Seems like the Reds gain a bigger advantage in September by being able to call up Franscisco, Yonder, Frasier, Chapman, Del Resario, Fisher, Harang, O-Cab, etc... Guys who have all played significant roles already this season, or guys that many think have bright futures in the majors sooner rather than later and can help in certain situations during the stretch drive.

Even bigger than that, IMHO, is that with only 1 more off day, unless they go on short rest, the Cards won't be able to skip over their 5th starter but once the rest of the season. None of the starters will be able to pick up an extra day of rest here and there either like one does when you keep the rotation in tact following an offday. All that could add up to a very tiring September and no much left in the tank heading into the final weekend.

Cards have played the fewest games in the division, three fewer than the Reds. They have had the opportunity to skip the weak spots in the rotation due to all their off days.

Now they have to make up for this by playing every day. The issue for them is whether their pitching will hold up. Lohse will have to pitch every turn. The bullpen will be used more heavily.

Of course, they get the reprieve of September 1, so they can add pitchers and undoubtedly will.

So, maybe, facing a chance to play a spoiler, Pedro Alvarez and McCutcheon and Walker and a few others will be engaged and rise to meet the moment. This game tonight should give a lot of insight into how the Cards could play for the rest of the season. Lohse is our #5 starter, so he will get a lot of starts. If he has a bad game, then it will be bad news for the Cards. Like someone said earlier, the Cards won't have the luxury of skipping starts anymore. So the #4 and #5 guys have to come through.

It's sheer conditioning. I've watched the Reds play poorly for so long that my desire for their reaching the playoffs has increased at the same time that my expectations for that actually happening have plummeted. The closer they get, the more we brace for disaster to protect ourselves.

There seems to be a harsh attitude toward any feeling perceived as negative on this board. Not everybody experiences the same event in the same way. It doesn't mean that I need to relax or that this isn't fun for me. Believe me, the fact that I am mulling over every negative possibility is only a sign that I'm getting more and more sucked into playoff fever and am enjoying it more and more.

Of course, I also sit in my black-walled house and listen to Morrissey all day and night, obviously. :)

I've noticed the same thing for most of the season. Seems every other day there's someone tripping over themselves to find a reason why the Reds are doomed to fall, or why a recent loss or 2 spells a certain continued streak of losses going forward. I understand cautious optimism, heck I embrace it, but it just feels like sports would be a heck of a lot less fun to follow if you didn't allow yourself to lean out ahead of your skis a bit. Sure the fall back to reality stings for a bit, but every once in a while, the ride presents a beautiful memory.

1990 was a beautiful ride; a decade(ish) later in '99 was another beautiful ride, despite heading dead into a tree in the 1 game playoff (or whatever you call it). Flash forward another decade, and we're seeing the same beautiful ride. Sure that may be a tree ahead waiting for us fans in the playoffs or perhaps even a 3 game set in St Louis, but I see no reason why fans shouldn't be more optomistic and take more joy out of this team than they seem to be doing. The beauty of baseball is that its always there. Starting in spring, and ending in the fall, there's a ride to follow every day; a storyline to provide entertainment. 40 games to go, and I see no reason to be looking for the next fall, but rather reasons to believe that the ascent hill is going to keep on climbing.

Batting average, home runs and runs batted in are not defining stats when looked at in isolation.

Ted Williams won the triple crown twice and did not win an MVP in either of the seasons when he accomplished that feat though.

That said, it is next to inconceivable to me, in this day and age, were someone to achieve the triple crown, that the MVP would not automatically follow.

The two years he won the triple crown but was runner-up in the MVP, he lost out to Joe Gordon and Joe DiMaggio -- both Yankees, both Hall of Famers, both in years where the Yankees breezed to the pennant. Not hard for that to happen. Williams did win two MVP awards in years where the Red Sox won or took the race to the wire.

And the other thing, alluded to earlier in the thread, is that triple crowns weren't nearly as rare in that era as they are today.

I'm saying when a team is that bad and has made over $30M in profit over the last two years, it may be time for a forced sale in the best interests of the game.

2-1 on Lopez.

I can't take this.

They have been doing good things as of late with the system and drafting.

Meek is hitting the high 90s on some of these fastballs. So that's nice for him.

I never had faith in the Pirates to win this game. I didn't even get excited when they went up 4-2 because I knew one way or another the Pirates would find a way to blow this game.

Pffft.. what are you talking about, they won easily

Nice job almost screwing up but not fully screwing up, Pirates! Thank you!

Meek really worked hard for his second career save, that was some generally woeful defense. Although, Cedeno gets props for hustling to get to the ball Alvarez booted which kept the tying run from scoring from second.

Huge help for the Reds right there. Nice if the Reds could capitalize with a win tonite in SF...

No, that's how he genuinely felt. Given that it's the Pirates, and how they conducted that inning, hard to lecture OBM on feeling that way.

Thanks Pirates, you proved me wrong. Thankfully. You've already won more games against the Cardinals than I expected you would.

The Reds, at worst, will end their west coast road trip with a 1 1/2 game lead in the NL Central. I'd like for it to be at least 2 1/2 though.

Yep, Houston blew their 2-1 lead and it's now 2-2 in the 10th inning. At least the most important result came out in our favor, and hopefully Houston can still pull their game out.

Colorado is beating Atlanta 2-1 in the 5th. Padres and DBacks get underway shortly.

Nope. The Pirates are awful. When rooting for them to win a game, based on their record, I'll never feel comofrtable until the final out is recorded.

To put things into persepctive, at the close of business on August 23, 2009 the Reds were 19 games out of first at 51-71. In last place, 1/2 game behind those same Pirates...

They are putrid. But use your statistical knowledge. The Pirates leading 4-2 in late innings will still win more often than not.

A 41-82 team beats Wainwright. Talk about Christmas in August. The Pirates are almost respectable at home this year and win slightly over 20% of their road games.

Pirates home: 29-36
Cardinals road: 27-32

Shocker is more beating Wainwright then the Pirates winning a game. Amazingly, simple odds say a 2-1 series in either direction was the most likely outcome.

If the Pirates win a game, is anyone around to see it? No seriously, anyone?

In seriousness though, while you are right... they have saved 25 games this year as a team and blown (I think) 16 saves. So they're about as risky with a 9th inning lead as you can find.
