Which always was laughable to me. The guy weighs in at 150 pounds and he isn't going to get any bigger. He has the frame of a 14 year old boy, but one who won't hit a growth spurt to fill out.

No idea. I haven't even thought about it.

As for Dee, I saw him a few weeks ago when some Lookouts were about to hit in the cage and he looked like he was still in high school. I was baffled.

I was highly skeptical of Justin Walker's promotion to Lynchburg. He had a 5.88 ERA at Dayton. His strong point is that he's always had an excellent BB:K rate, and apparently--possibly for that reason--the Reds like him. Anyway, his Lynchburg debut today was outstanding: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K. The Hillcats won 8-3.

Jaren Matthews hit his sixth home run for the AZL Reds. That puts him one off the league lead, in only 55 at-bats. The leader has twice as many.

With Ismael Guillon pitching, the AZL Reds trail 4-2 in the fourth. Torreyes is 1 for 2.

Thanks, c-golf, for the complete set of box scores.

Matthews is interesting. According to BA, he has plus raw power, but his swing is a mess. Once a prospect who negotiated a $250K signing bonus out of HS, he decided to attend Rutgers where he regressed. At #32, drafting him was a low risk proposition with potentially high reward. He has been on a tear for the last five games. Perhaps the Reds coaches have been able to make important changes.

Very preliminary report on Burton is "discomfort in his left oblique".

Thats probably a season ender for him if its a legit oblique strain.

Jose Amezcua (he's called Tony on our draft thread), this year's 7th-rounder, made his debut last night for the AZL Reds. Threw a perfect inning with 2 K. He was drafted out of a California high school.

Junior Arias went 2-for-4.

Ismael Guillon took over the Arizona Summer League lead in strikeouts last night. He's now got 52 K's in 42.1 innings. Jonathan Correa is still #2 despite being promoted to Billings.

Cody Puckett's still flying under the radar a bit. He's had a solid season at A+. Though his K% is high (24% or thereabouts), his BB rate is fine (at around 9%) and his power is unmistakable (469 slugging).

For a 2B with a good glove (ony 9 errors in 366 chances for a 975 fielding percentage and above average RF/G at 4.89), that power would look mighty good in Cincinnati in a couple years.

He reminds me a bit of Dan Uggla offensively at the same level and may profile to that level if he continues to progress. Still only 23, FWIW, he should be ready some time during his 25-26 season.

A 'good glove' implies that he's solid defensively, and although his hands may be okay, he's lacking in range and has a fairly weak arm. I think it was redsof72 who said he envisioned a position change at some point. I could see that happening, but I think his future is as a below-average second baseman when it comes to defense. The guy can certainly hit, though.

4.89 RF/G implies he has better than league average range at the second base spot. He's third among all 2B who are starters on their team in that respect in the 8-team league.

(I realize it's almost impossible to quantify defense, but this metric is the only one I know of that's available. If you know another, let me know.)

I see Puckett being moved only because of the number of bodies that project to his position and his bat, unlike the others, would play well in LF as well.

Eventually the logjam is going to get real stiff at the upper levels.

Scrap Irony
08-09-2010, 08:56 PM
Logjams have a way of working themselves out. Cozart should play short, Valaika may be a super sub. Ditto Frazier.

Who, aside from Phillips (who will be owed a substantial amount of money should he still be in Cincinnati) projects to block him?

Jose Castro has hit one year in professional baseball. Besides, he's a SS playing 2B. Same with Negron.

Puckett has some pop and can play in the middle of the diamond. If you move him to a corner, he becomes much less valuable.
