Lynchburg got 2 in the first and lost 5-2. Curtis Partch is pitching better lately (6 IP, 2 R, 6 K), but Pedro Villareal, up from Dayton, was roughed up a bit in his Lynchburg debut. Kyle Day drove in the 2 with a double and walked twice. Nothing else exciting on the hitting end.

I didn't realize that the VSL Reds completed their season on Sunday (with an 7-6 win). Apparently, they decided it wasn't worth playing anymore without Ronald Torreyes.

They finished with a 35-33 record.

In 67 games and 241 at-bats, Torreyes led the league in

* batting (390)
* OPS (1.074)
* hits (94 -- next was 76)
* total bases (146 -- next was 111)
* doubles (20)
* triples (10 -- next was 6)
* slugging (606)
* runs (56)

Luis Gonzalez, a 17-year-old lefty, led the VSL in ERA (2.49) and WHIP (0.97). Oswaldo Mieres was 4th in ERA, Franderlin Romero 8th.

Mieres (18, RH), led the league in strikeouts (61 in 72.2 IP).

Those numbers are really impressive, but what blows me out of the water is the gap between Torreyes and the guy in second. Wow. Can't wait to see what he does in the next step up.

Dayton is a woeful 10-32 in the second half. Unbelievably, they have not been that bad on the road at 9-12, but the Dragons are 1-20 at home in the second. That just does not seem possible.

I shouldn't argue too much since my spelling can be pretty weak, but is it a joke on the board with Alonso? I mean he is one of our TOP prospects can we cut the Alonzo Mourning spelling. ;)

Not an attack at all GOYA, and thanks for all the Bats updates!

Here is to Yonder Alonso continuing the tear tonight!

Bailey was going to be the starter, but due to the Reds plans he is going to only throw an inning. May be to step into Leake's spot? Just Reds rumors so far.

The DSL Reds won a squeaker against the DSL White Sox, 5-4.

+
Carlos Sanchez continues to hit.
Five innings of scoreless relief, including two from the closer, Carlos Ramos, who lowered his ERA to 0.33.
Jose Guzman has now thrown 10 consecutive innings without allowing a run.

-
It was a rough start for Cesar Caceres. He hit four batters and threw a wild pitch.
There were a few baserunning miscues.
Jonathan Suero, a middle infielder, struck out in all three of his plate appearances.

Lynchburg's bats went silent after the first inning as they lost 5-2.

+
Kyle Day had a two-RBI double. He also walked twice.
Jose Gualdron, playing the role of organizational filler, had two base hits.
Curtis Partch had a decent start with six strikeouts over six innings.
The game could've been much worse--Potomac was held to 2-for-14 with RISP.

-
They mustered just one extra-base hit.
Shane Carlson has been looking like he doesn't belong on the field.
Although he was good as a starter, Pedro Villarreal has been doing miserably as a reliever. That is especially the case of his Lynchburg debut.

With pleasure!

The Bats came back in typical fashion to win the game in the ninth.

+
Homer Bailey pitched a scoreless inning in his transition to a relief role.
Aroldis Chapman struck out two and got the save.
Todd Frazier has shown surprising speed this year--already 11 stolen bases.
Wilkin Castillo, Yonder Alonso, and Wladimir Balentien each had multi-hit games.
Balentien had two doubles and five RBIs.
Corky Miller was fat enough to get hit by a pitch but swift enough on the basepaths to score the game-tying run.

-
Chris Valaika, starting the game at shortstop, was 0-for-4 and struck out twice.
Ben Jukich was bad.

Believe it or not, Dayton somehow lost. It was a close game by their standards, though--only a 9-2 loss.

+
They weren't no-hit.
None of the players died.
Didi Gregorius had just one error.
Doug Salinas pitched 3.1 innings of shutout ball.
Eight men were left on base but hey--eight men got on base! (Is that a season high?)
Ryan LaMarre is 16-for-39 over a 10-game hitting streak.

-
Pretty much everything else, namely Ricky Bowen, Andrew Means, and Didi Gregorius.

The decision to protect Balentien this off season should be a no-brainer.

It really should come down to him or re-signing Gomes.

And Balentien is better, cheaper, and younger.

That's very logical, and I agree, but that there's no way that's happening. I really hope I'm wrong, though. Gomes--at least statistically--hurts the team. When Balentien is struggling, at least he can fall back on his solid defense in the corner outfield.

Carolina lost a wild one, 12-10. It took three hours and 46 minutes to complete.

+
The offense was great. All the position players produced. Kris Negron, Devin Mesoraco, and Sean Henry each had three hits. The team had eight extra-base hits.
The bullpen kept it close despite a former position player and a current position player getting in on the action. Joe Krebs and Ruben Medina had very good performances.

-
Scott Carroll was horrible.
Brandon Yarbrough had yet another error in left field.
Jerry Gil walked three of the nine batters he saw.

I wouldn't bet against him being on the Reds' playoff roster. :)

The Mudcats are three games under .500 and eight games back. I think that about does it for any playoff chances this year. There are a few bright spots on the roster and I hope Joseph gets to spend some time here before the season ends. From a team perspective, not a good year.
