I hope Sappelt does well at Louisville. He was a huge part of the offense here. Another reason to hope Louisville comes through Durham one more time this year.

Bottom of the 13th, Columbus and Syracuse still knotted at 3. Syracuse Chiefs hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 13th. Columbus falls 4-3. Your first place Louisville Bats. If I counted correctly Louisville is 32-6 in their last 38 games. Ridiculous.

All four of the Reds' rookie teams currently have winning records, led by the DSL Reds at 38-23. The others (the VSL Reds are finished for the year) are narrowly over .500, but still . . .

Last year, with the poor showing of the affiliates in the standings, there was reason to believe that the system was not as strong as many of us thought it to be. This year, with the wretched start, it was more of the same. Carolina, Lynchburg and Dayton have continued to struggle. But with Louisville's remarkable resurgence and the consistently strong showing of the rookie clubs, it's looking like a pretty good year on the farms. Most important, of course, are the individual performances that resonate throughout the system.

This may be a rationalization, but I tend to believe that the mediocrity at the A-AA levels is not as troublesome as it may appear. The fact is, the Reds themselves are very young, and the Bats are obviously loaded. With all the recent and imminent promotions to Cincinnati, there will be no shortage of talented youth at the major-league level in the foreseeable future. No doubt, there is a need to shore up that middle level of the organization; but even so, there's plenty to be pleased with.

Dayton is horrible, just plain horrible. Of the games I've seen, I seriously would only consider LaMarre and Gregorious as potential future MLB position players. Maybe Doug could add to that, but I really have trouble seeing MLB talent on the Fifth Third Field each night (unless you count the opposing team). Maybe someone makes a big jump (Josh Garton comes to mind) to really improve, but I just don't see it.

The squad as a whole has certainly had a squalid season, but having a couple position players with "major league regular" potential is nothing to sneeze at. I consider HRod an interesting player, too. And Jacob Johnson could be a pitcher to watch. He's really held up well for a young guy in that league.

I think there's a lot of similar ballplayers like Negron, Jake K, Sean Henry, Eyemann, who are all good solid ballplayers. I just don't have the feeling they are going to ever be anything than that. If they ever make the bigs its just as temporary fill ins.

Very likely. What makes me curious about Negron is that there's a little buzz about his having plus defense at SS and plus intangibles. Combine that with solid OBP and a little pop, and maybe you have a guy who can stick in the bigs in some capacity.

I feel the same way about Henry, still believe that kid could contribute to a 25 man roster. Good wheels, good arm, solid really everywhere both skills and talent wise. Probably needs to increase his versatility by being able to reliably man 2B in addition to all OF spots. And of course bide his time even more.

It could be he just isn't quite as talented as I think he is but I won't give up on him until I see it one way or the other. Either MLB never gives him the chance and he hangs it up and moves on or he is given a chance somewhere down the road and proves he can stick or not.

1. Joseph
2. Soto
3. Puckett

What's the story on Means? I see he was just promoted to Lynchburg. Looks like he's a pretty effective base stealer (90%+), that's for sure. Definitely not tearing it up with the bat. Looking at Lynchburg's roster, (with the exception of Joseph) I'd probably rather be watching Dayton right now.

Yeah, I'm sure I underrated Puckett. His defense is below average (his arm probably plays at only first and second base), and he strikes out a lot, but I like him more this year than I did last year. I think AA will be a very interesting test for him.
