vs. Daniel Hudson

Reds signed #1 pick C Yasmani Grandal to a big leage deal, meaning a 40-man roster spot.

Mike Leake has been moved to the bullpen. Wood will come back up as expected to re-join the rotation, and Homer will also stay in the rotation.

I will do some PBP.

Most importantly...look at Hanny in the SIX slot?!? Wow.

I must admit, I do like this lineup. Shame I won't be able to listen to ANY of the game. *sigh* Gotta wake up at 5am tomorrow. :(

The kid is very good. Great location, good stuff.

Kid was a K-Machine in the minors. Velocity seems OK (He's working at 91-93 -- that's pretty much minimum requirements for a RHP), location is fantastic, and he looks to have very good arm action on all his pitches.

He's no different than any other young pitcher, though. You need to work the count against him and force him to come to you with a pitch.

There is no way that the ump could clearly see whether he touched the bag or not.

Bullcrap call.

He has no right to make that call. It has to be clear cut. If we can't tell in super slow motion in HD, how the heck can the home plate ump claim that he saw it definitively enough to call him out.

I'll say it again...

Baseball is so funny. Umps give second basemen and shortstops the phantom tag of 2B on DP's, but they're going to get picky on this?

It wasn't like he wasn't going to score and he gained an unfair advantage. Plus, it looks to close to call that anyway. Give me a break.

dsmith421
08-17-2010, 10:53 PM
Stubbs gave the ump a chance to screw him, whether or not he scraped the base on the way by. He's got to be more careful.

Phillips missed an absolute cookie on the second last pitch of his at-bat. Montero called for it at his eyes and Hudson threw it straight down Broadway.

I can't see his foot hitting the bag. Sorry.

But can you see it definitely not touching the bag? That's the standard for calling him out. You have to definitively see him not touch the bag to overrule the call. There is no way the ump could say that he saw Stubbs not touch the bag.

He has no right to make that call. It has to be clear cut. If we can't tell in super slow motion in HD, how the heck can the home plate ump claim that he saw it definitively enough to call him out.

I'll say it again...

Bullcrap call.

I get a 52" HD LCD TV. Folks, the foot of Drew Stubbs did very much touch the base. He got the inside edge, very close to exactly how you're suppose to do. What do you have to stomp on the bag now for the umps to approve. Something needs done about MLB umping. I'm not sure if it's replay, but something needs to be done.

I meant he was overruling the call of the third base ump, who didn't seem to think he missed the bag. It's the third base ump's call, unless another ump wants to over rule him. in fact, the third base umps job on that play is to watch the bag and make sure the player touched it.

The homeplate ump should not be making that call.

Yes that is the HP umps call because the 3B ump potentially has the catch to the OF and the HP ump has the best angle to see if the runner touched the inside of the bag. The 3B ump is not going to see if the runner touched the inside of the bag if he is in foul territory.

Third base ump was out in left field looking at the batted ball. That makes the call at third the home plate ump's responsibility. They NEVER call a missed base unless the team in the field appeals. So the first possible call was his to make.

As I posted earlier, second basemen and shortstop's miss the 2B bag or touch it before they've received the ball on double play turns all the ti8me and umps don't call it.

If Stubbs missed the bag by a millimeter (in which case I doubt the HP ump could tell one way or the other), the call should not be made unless you want attention for calling it. "Look at me". Especially when it gave Stubbs no advantage on a play that wasn't close at the plate.
