But we'll never know for sure.

This is a significant piece to the story, I think:

The finding’s relevance to Gehrig is less clear. But the Yankees legend had a well-documented history of significant concussions on the baseball field, and perhaps others sustained as a battering-ram football halfback in high school and at Columbia University. Given that, it’s possible that Gehrig’s renowned commitment to playing through injuries like concussions, which resulted in his legendary streak of playing in 2,130 consecutive games over 14 years, could have led to his condition.

We understandably applaud it as heroic, but there's something to be said for allowing yourself to heal. If this proves to be true (and it's doubtful that they can verify it with Gehrig), I suspect he would have traded some of those days he's played to have lived longer.

One of the best baseball books I have read "Luckiest Man, The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig" gives excellent insight on Gehrig and the final years of his life.

This would be the most ironic thing ever.

It's very plausible that he could have died as result of many concussions. He played football in the days before helmuts and I'm sure took a lot of hard hits. Like others have said we will never know for sure.
