After last night's game we are at 40 with forty one games to play.

Let me now if I am wrong but I have been using

Reds games left + 1 - losses ahead of Cards

41 + 1 - 2 = 40

my bad, I thought 40 was jumping the gun a bit. Guess I should have searched a bit more

if someone wants to merge it, ok by me

Interesting link, the mlbmagicnumber site. Confirming that we're in the driver's seat, the Cardinals magic number is 47, compared to our 40. We still need to take care of our part, but it's a good situation to have.

Hearing magic number used in conjunction with the Reds makes me salivate just a bit.

As a Reds fan young enough to have missed out on most of the previous good years, I'm drooling more than I would over a $200 steak. This has been the greatest summer of my baseball life.

This is what it's all about.

Make sure you soak it all in.

I was 8 in 1990, don't remember much but the World Series. But I'll second that.

The "elimination number" for every team is in parentheses.

I was only a few months old when the Reds won the World Series in 90. So I've never had this much fun following the Reds in the last 10 years I've followed them.

Same here. I'm 23 years old, so aside from the exciting 1999 season, the Reds have struggled for the majority of my life. I was only three years old when they won the World Series in 1990, and was only eight years old when they reached the NLCS in 1995. I can remember them sweeping the Dodgers and then getting swept by the Braves but I don't remember anything from the regular season. This season has been amazing so far. I hope it continues all the way through late October.

Cards Loss + Reds Win = 38, I do believe

The win was huge, but Homer's outing tonight may be bigger in the grand scheme of things. Composed, effortless and effective. Top of the rotation stuff. If he keeps it going it is gonna be tough to stop this club.

wow, really excited for all of you who are basically following this for the first time. sounds like some of you were just kids even in 1999.

have fun. WARNING: it usually ends in devastating heart break, but it's still a lot better than trying to play spoilers to the Cubs (although that can be pretty fun).

I've been around for some good years and I'm a OSU fan so I know heart break.Trust me, it's a lot better to be a little sad about the season ending then not even noticing that it ended.

Magic # is down to 37.

The Reds are currently 72-52 (.581). If the Reds can simply maintain their winning percentage and go 22-16 (.579) the rest of the way, it will force the Cardinals to go 27-14 (.659) the rest of the season just to tie.

Even with the loss it goes to 36
