View Full Version : Joey Votto and the batting title
Joey Votto is currently leading the NL at .320 with several other guys right on his tail. Omar Infante is playing with his hair on fire and is at .344 but does not have enough plate appearances to qualify. Currently, Infante has 322 PA’s and needs 502 PA’s to qualify for the batting title. The Braves have 40 games left and Infante bats lead off so he should easily get another 160+ PA’s. Did you know there is a rule that if a player finishes the season shy of PA’s for a batting title (let’s say 10 at bats short), MLB will give him an 0 for 10 and if Infante still has the highest batting average he would win the title? I didn’t.
I called Infante the worst all-star selection ever but he’s playing like an all-star since he became a regular. With all the Votto triple crown talk (or anyone else in the NL) I just don’t see it happening with Infante around. It's possible though. If he hits .300 the rest of the way he would finish around .314 BA.

Even at .320, Joey seems to be in a bit of a slump himself, especially in terms of power.
Once a utility player becomes an everyday player, I don't expect their numbers to hold up. He's just "hot" right now, but he won't sustain it.

The Triple Crown hopes for this season lie solely with Albert Pujols. Votto might win the batting title and if he goes on a hot streak he could win the home run title. But he is too far behind in the RBI race considering Pujols and Howard are above him. You could say the same thing about the homers with Pujols and Dunn above him. I just don't see him leading the league in either category.

Pujols has had a hot month and has caught up to Votto in pretty much every catagory. Votto is only one point behind in OPS so that's still close obviously, but Pujols is also close behind him in runs and average.
Pujols: BA .316 RBIs 88 HR 32 OPS% 1.007 XBH 60 Runs 82 BB 73 SO 54
Votto: BA .320 RBIs 81 HR 28 OPS% 1.006 XBH 53 Runs 83 BB 69 SO 95
Numbers still could change. Votto is only 7 rbi's behind...one good game and he easily closes the gap. Same with homers. Nobody gets on base in front of Albert Pujols for him to drive them in. Most his rbi's lately are via the solo home run.

With the Reds not playing any more home games against teams with winning records, Votto should be teeing off on these clubs.

That's what I thought about my entire team against the crap that has been pitching against us the last few games. Doesn't always work out that way.

Pujols has a serious chance, for like the fifth or sixth time in his career, to win the triple crown. It would be quite an achievement, although not surprising, if he did it.

Barring the unexpected, I think the MVP goes to the player whose team wins the Central (unless there is a Triple Crown winner). Go Reds! Go Votto!

Pujols seems to cool off in Sept. GO VOTTO
In 1042 career plate appearances in September (and very early October) these are his numbers:
.343avg .440obp .613slg 1.053ops
His worst month is July:
.324avg .410obp .596slg 1.006ops
Pretty much he's constantly hitting at an MVP level no matter how you slice it

Yeah, I was about to say that August and September are generally Pujols best months.
The other crazy stat I found out is that Pujols is ranked 9th all time in HR's at PNC park. That is insane.

By the way, Pujols had another 3 hit night and his BA is up to .322 now.

So Albert is now .001 in average from actually leading all three categories. I think if Votto goes 1-4 or worse tonight then Pujols controls the triple crown, at least for a night.
