You do have to think about the rest of the series at this point. I know it's only the first inning, but you have to be realistic. Against Matt Cain, we've got about a 1 in 100 chance of winning this game. But you go out there and blow five or six relievers, now we're screwed for not only tonight, but for tomorrow and Wednesday and maybe even after that.

You know what, he's coming off Tommy John so I'll give him that, but it absolutely pisses me off what Cueto and Volquez do with the talent they have and the control problems they often run into. In my mind, its just pure laziness and no willingness to improve. These guys aren't rookies, they should know what they can and can't do by now ,and understand what they're doing right when they pitch shutout baseball and what they're doing wrong in these type of outings. But guess what? They never seem to learn. And i'm guessing both of them do nothing in the offseason to fix that and sit on their butts.

This is a bit of a reach. I still remember seeing soul-glo dripping off Petey Martinez's shoulders when he was the best pitcher in baseball.

That's exactly how I feel...luckily this is one of the few games this season that has started this poorly.

I'm particularly sensitive to it because living in Alabama I don't make it to many Reds games and the last two or three I've seen in person were of this variety. One was against the Indians in GABP and Travis Hafner hit a pinch-hit grand slam in like the fourth or fifth inning. Another was against the Cardinals in GABP and it was like 8-1 after two innings and then last year I saw Arroyo's start in Atlanta against the Braves. I think he threw one inning and gave up 8 runs.

I can't deal with a pitcher with an over 6.00 era. I'd much rather have Leake out there right now. People act like Volquez is some kind of ace or something. He's had one good half season. After the all star game in 08 he wasn't nearly as good in the second half. Didn't look good before he got hurt last year, and hasn't looked good this year. He also wasn't good with the Rangers.

That trade of Volquez for Hamilton will go down in Reds history right up there with the Frank Robinson deal.

Out of the three match ups in this series, this is the game I thought the Reds would lose, so it doesn't hurt too much even if we do lose tonight.

If the Reds can just take 1 of 3 from SF, they will have a 6-3 road trip. There's no one who can (honestly) tell me they wouldn't take a 6-3 trip going into this stretch.

I don't disagree there, but it hurts a lot more when your starter gives you 2/3 of an inning. I honestly didn't expect to win this game, but I thought we might could get five innings from our starter.

Props to Jordan Smith for taking one for the team tonight. 4 1/3 innings is way above and beyond the call.

WTH? I leave the house, it's bottom 1st, things look OK. I pull into the movie theater, somehow manage to get WLW even in St Louis, and it's 5-0 and Volquez is being yanked? I leave the movie 2 hours later and it's 11-2, and 2 players are hurt? My heart hit the floor when they said the injury to.... and then paused. I was terrified it was Joey.

Did they forget they were playing? West Coast jinx?
No, they just can't handle the big teams. They can sweep away the teams that are way under .500 and go 2-1 vs. an average LA Dodger team, but when it comes down to it, Cincinnati can't really hang with the big boys.
