Nix 5 for 11 with 1 HR vs. Cain.

Other notables:

Phillips 5 for 19, two doubles and 1 HR
Votto 4 for 15, 2 BB.
Rolen 2 for 4 one double

Stubbes 0 for 5 3Ks...perhaps that's why he's out but..
Edmonds 1 for 8 3 Ks not much better.
Bruce 0 for 4 3 BBs.

For what its worth, anyone who hasn't been to SF needs to go now. The most unique and beautiful city in the US. If circumstances allowed, I'd move there yesterday, and I am probably the furthest thing from a hippie there is. :D

I visited there about ten years ago, and the main thing I remember is the weather. While walking around downtown I kept having to put on and then take off my jacket every 5 minutes as the sun ducked in and out of the clouds. But yeah, neat city otherwise.

And Matt Cain frustrates me. His stuff doesn't seem all that overpowering or dominating, but you'll look up at the scoreboard in the 7th and he'll be tossing a 3 hit shutout. Hopefully the Reds can employ the same approach they had against Josh Johnson: disciplined at-bats with selective aggression mixed in. The Pirates are playing Pirate baseball against the Cards, so we need a win here to maintain the 3.5 game lead.

I am hoping Volquez really goes into this start with a chip on his shoulder. He currently is the weak link in the rotation and needs to use that as motivation. I know he will walk 3 or so guys, but the HR's have killed him. The Reds need this win. If just to demoralize the Cards on a daily basis.

There's hope for Volquez, there's no hope for Harang.

Harang has a 9 ERA in AAA. Just bad.

Have you looked at anything other than ERA for Harang's AAA numbers?

10 K's, 2 walks in 11 innings and given up just 1 homer.

His BABIP is .382 and strand rate is just 38 percent... meaning well over half of the baserunners that have gotten on base have scored.

with the Reds, he had 75 K's to just 28 walks before getting hurt.

Volquez?

He's walked 24 guys and given up 6 homers in 34 innings.

I think there's a lot more hope that Harang can come up and be a decent starter for the Reds than there is of expecting Volquez to be anything but a major enigma the rest of the season.

It was silly to think we'd get much from EV in 2010, the Colorado start gave us false hope.

He has to go to AAA for a couple starts. It's mental as much as anything now and he needs to rehab outside a pennant race or shut it down until Spring 2011.

Arroyo's option for 2011 (as if their was any doubt about picking it up) is an easy call now barring a major acquisition.

Yup. The Reds traded a highly talented position player who was one relapse away from being out of baseball for a highly talented pitcher.

It's not like Volquez has been garbage since he came to the Reds. He had an ERA in the low 3s and struck out 200 guys his first year in Cincinnati. Then his arm fell off last year.

Pitchers get hurt, it happens. It's hard to predict when it happens. There's no doubt if you could trade Volquez for Hamilton right now, you'd do it.

Doesn't change the fact that the Reds weren't wrong for making the trade. And as somebody else said, I'm not sure why anybody brings it up. It's not like Jocketty made the trade.

What is relevant is what the Reds do with EV going forward in 2010. This kind of outing is a killer for the staff.

The Reds have an off day Thursday, the rotation would set up like this:

Tomorrow: Wood
Wednesday: Bailey
Thursday: Off day
Friday: Cueto
Saturday Arroyo
Sunday: Would be Volquez, but with the off day you could come back with Wood on normal rest.
Monday: Bailey on normal rest

That gets you to Tuesday, which is also August 31st. You could either call Harang up or give Leake the start that day.

Then the rosters expand the next day.

Btw, in no way to I put Volquez on the DL. That's pointless. If you don't want him pitching in a pennant race, that's fine, but then he needs to be logging innings in AAA.

Infield hit. Nix is really hitting the ball well.

It seemed like Nix was taking the city tour to 1st base.

I've mentioned this before, and heck maybe he's not a dark horse, but Matt Cain is my dark horse Hall of Famer playing in the bigs today.

He is only 25 years old, and has a career record of 53-61 with a 3.46 ERA... if he sticks around till he is 35 to 40 he may win 300...

Regardless of the outcome of the game, I really do like tonight's lineup vs. righties.

I But Volquez has done NOTHING to warrant much hope.

In the 3 starts before his previous one before tonight, Volquez had given up 1run each game.

And the Reds had won 5 of his 6 starts this year.

Sure he pitched terrible tonight, but to suggest going into the game that he hadn't done anything to warrant much hope of a win, suggests to me you really aren't paying attention.

If he'd been on a team with a decent offense he might have 100 wins already.

Cain is getting a wide strike zone.

Seems like MVP is team dependent.
