Interesting post from MLBTR (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/08/joey-vottos-2011-salary.html).

The Reds may or may not offer Joey Votto an extension this winter, but he's setting himself up for a massive raise, even if Cincinnati doesn't offer a long-term deal. Votto leads the National League in batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage and is second in RBI and third in home runs. He's just three homers and three RBI away from leading the league in every triple crown category and has a 1.023 OPS since the All-Star break, so he's showing no signs of slowing down.

They compare him to similar 1B including fellow Canadian, Justin Morneau.

Thoughts?

Thoughts are....Joey is a damned fine player. I hope the Reds are able to reasonably reward him for his play this year without putting themselves in the position to have to trade him in 2 years. Time will tell.

He's arguably the best player in the NL right now. You just have to bite the bullet and pay him.

No doubt. It's really terrible that the Reds find themselves in such a dilemma.

I remeber right before his September call up many reports said the Reds were not high on Votto. Some even went as far a labeling him a AAAA player. Where are those people?

Crow can take a long time to eat.

I go all out for him. 7 years $98 Mil. That's 14 mil per. Keeps him a Red til he is 34. Let the fan base know you are long term committed to winning, invites other players to come play along with him, keeps a top 5 player in baseball in Cincy. If Minnesota can do it for Morneau the Reds can do it for Votto.

I would break the bank and sign him long term and buy out the arb years if he'll go for it. Not sure how long I'd go, but I'd try to get him for at least 5-6 years. The money is trickier. I'd see if he'd bite on 6 years $90M.

It wasn't that long ago that people said the Reds shouldn't lock him up because it was risky.

Just to clarify...is this a "I was right, you were wrong" post?

Nope, I wanted to point out how people want to sign him to a long term extension now when just a few months ago people didn't want to.
