Wow, with Phillips and Cabrera out it just keeps getting more and more interesting. Go Jay.

I would much rather have Janish leading off. More often than not Bruce isn't going to give you a good at bat, Janish will. Oh well, hopefully it works and we put up a lot of crooked numbers tonight.

Valaika's major league debut?

Yes, it's his first ML start, Kingspoint.

Bruce has a relatively good OBP and is a smart base runner, so it makes sense on a couple levels.

What, since we're playing the Cubs let's put any old crap out there and we'll win?

I guess we'll see.

Valaika's major league debut?

Not his major league debut, but this is his first time starting a game.

I don't know about this. Hopefully he'll take some pitches, make the pitcher get his pitch count up and draw a couple of walks.

Anyone, apart from me, find it interesting that it is not Miguel Cairo starting at 2nd base?

He's the back up corner infielder, Valaika is the back up middle infielder. That's how I think it will be anyway.

Yep, Cairo would be a major liability in the middle of the infield for a whole game. He might come in late to pinch hit and then they can hope nothing tough is hit his way in the later innings.

Can we ever get a lineup card without people complaining?

Lets be honest here, in the 127 some games Dusty has sent out the lineup card, weve won 19 more then weve lost.

You could have given me 100 guesses and I'd never guessed Bruce/Valaika to be batting first and second tonight. I'd rather see something like Janish/Bruce at the top, and hit Valaika 8th. I just don't like a lot of tinkering with the lineup right now.

But if it works, I'm ok with it. :)

Bruce gives the Reds a better OBP than what they were getting out of Phillips.

Seriously ?

You could be right, but it sure seems like every time I see Bruce at the plate, he strikes out swinging and looks bad doing it.

yes seriously

Bruce is .333
Phillips leading off was .323

Bruce OBP by month
.333
.387
.339
.245
.360

Bruce has had an OPS over .825 every month but 1 this season.

I wouldn't have minded Bruce leading off all season. He's been working on getting on base more, and cutting down on his power. I think he would have responded positively to it. Well see how he does tonight. :-)

I think he might have just figured out that if he keeps head down and his eye on the ball he hits them.

Yes, I'd say Bruce/Valaika worked out.

Bruce can lead off and Phillips can bat second from here on out.

I was worried about Bruce hacking away, but he not only hit the three home runs, but showed great patience.

Could this be what we've been waiting for? A Jay Bruce hot streak?

Remember what he did last Aug/Sept when he returned from injury.

If he gets hot this will be even more fun!

I wonder if Dusty noticed Gomes O'fer tonight against a left handed starter?

Youd think people would learn by now to stop bashing the batting order.

I understand bashing moves like playing Gomes, or leaving pitchers in too long, but batting order seems a bit ridiculous sometimes.

On a nightly basis the line up is a crap shoot but over the course of the season it does add up.

It adds up to us being 20 games over .500 you are right.

Its just kinda annoying that EVERY SINGLE NIGHT someone is like ugh this is the worst lineup ever, then we go on to win by 6 runs.

Dusty Baker is solely responsible for Joey Votto being the hitter he is today. Without Dusty, Joey would be absolutely nothing.

To be fair they have been shut out 12 times also.

The point is that when you give guys who OBP below .300 a ton of PA by leading them off or 2nd or what ever you give yourself less chances to score runs because it will lower you team overall OBP.

Batting orders do matter. No doubt about that. 4 Jay Bruce hitting 1-4 and 4 Ocab batting 4-8 is going to score more runs than 4 Ocab batting 1-4 and 4 Bruce 4-8.

I do see where it does get annoying.

I was thinking that when Brandon Phillips returns, we should extend this Jay Bruce batting leadoff experiment. To me, it would make sense, especially if in the first inning, or first couple of innings when the pitcher is trying to get a feel for his pitches. If he is unable to find his breaking ball, we all know what Jay Bruce can do to a fastball. He is a decent runner on the basepaths and has decent speed. I think I like the idea of Phillips and Bruce (or Bruce and Phillips) setting the table for Votto and Rolen.

Just me thinking out loud, either way, last night was awesome

sooo true... the reds have had the best offense in the NL all season. at times the lineups dusty makes look foolish and unwarranted, but in the big scheme of things our offense has done very well, and i believe dusty deserves some credit

I don't think experimentations with the lineup are what draws the head-scratching. I think it is the continual placement of people in roles they are not well suited for. Gomes 5th, Phillips 4th, etc.

I like the way you think. As a top 4, I believe these guys have a very good chance of being productive on a nightly basis.

I didn't complain yesterday on this thread because I didn't have a problem with Bruce batting first and Valaika hitting second.

I figured Jay would get better pitches to hit. And Valaika is like a .300 hitter in the minors and puts the ball in play.

No problem with it.

I like Valaika playing 2B over Cairo. Younger. More range. Supposed to have excellent defense.
