Just got word first baseman/ outfielder Yonder Alonso will be recalled by the Reds tomorrow.

I was wondering about him tonight. With the shortage of outfielders active right now, he might be used as a late inning pinch hitter and then out in the outfield.

We just keep bringing up more talent. My gosh, this is such a change from what we'd been seeing for so long. It just keeps getting better and better.

I support the Bats and hope they can make their own playoff run, but we gotta bring up the guys we can to stack this roster, plain and simple. Hopefully we bring up another arm or two for the pen just to help give different guys like Rhodes rest.

The Bats have an influx of first basemen guys. Im guessing Frazier plays 3rd and Dorn plays first for them in the playoffs.

Although he could be if they have to 60 day DL someone or something. There is ways around it.

Alonso has pushed his batting average just shy of .300 at triple A after struggling in the first half. Pretty impressive rebound for him.

I might be wrong but I think it has to be position player on the 60 day DL for that exemption to work out. Pitcher for pitcher, position player for position player.

Everything I've heard about him is that he's barely athletic enough to play 1B. Is there really a thought that he could play OF? I thought he was purely a 1B or DH.

I thought I read something linked there that said it went as far as having to be the same POSITION. I remember the article saying "catcher for catcher". I don't know how that's qualified, though. Seems like you could call a guy whatever you wanted.

Alonso played the outfield in the minors if that is the case.

So Im kind of confused by the definition "rookie"

Is there a certain amount of games you have to play to make you a rookie? For instance. If he plays 10 games this year, but makes the MLB team on Opening Day next year, is he a rookie then? Ive heard both ways.

RedsFan. he definitely would be a rookie next year.

Even if Alonso could be added to the roster for the postseason, it doesn't make sense to me to add him. He has no major league experience. I'd rather have a veteran as my late inning pinch hitter than a raw rookie, no matter his future ceiling.

Also, Alonso proved in the minors that he can only play first base. We need a bench with more flexibility than that.

They are showcasing him for a trade in the offseason. He really should start the season in the majors next year. It sucks that he probably won't be doing it for the Reds.

Anyone have thoughts on good matches for an offseason trade?

I've hear that Alonso is going to play LF in winter ball and compete for the starting spot in the spring. Face it, he can't be any worse with the glove than Gomes. :eek:
