I'm a big "pick your pitch" kind of guy. If you think you'll get what you're looking for on the first pitch of the plate appearance, I say sock it.

That said, to begin an inning, I do prefer to see guys leading it off make the pitcher work a bit to set the tone.

Since you don't have 3-4-5 coming up is precisely why you don't give up an out just to play for the hope you get a flyball the next at-bat.

Why give up an out with a guy at second and no one out? Worst case scenario you strikeout, fly out or ground out and the guy is still at second. Guess what... the Reds wasted an out and still didn't even get the guy over.

The choice wasn't to give away and out for nothing or let him hit.

Explain that to me. How wasn't it? They were trying a sacrifice bunt... that's essentially handing over an out in trade for getting a guy up one base. The other option is to swing away. How is that not a choice?

The bad part of that AB was that he took an 87 MPH slider up in the zone for strike 3. That thing was begging to be hit.

Worst case scenario you strikeout, fly out or ground out and the guy is still at second.

The problem was that they didn't execute the bunt. Saying "the guy is still at second" is weak since Dusty didn't know that Janish was going to fail up there.

He still intentionally gave up an out with the chance they would be doing it for naught.

It's not weak. They purposely gave up an out to try to advance a runner and worse yet, they didn't get the runner over.
