cabrerra and janish are a push. janish has more power, cabrerra makes better contact. gomes is only playing because of injury at this point and phillips is a career 268 hitter. what do u expect?

Why are we suddenly starting Phillips (who can't hit against STL right now, at all, period) and Cabrera who just came back from injury?

Stick with Janish and Valaika. Janish goes yard last night and we don't play him today. Ugh.

Makes better contact is translated to "weak bat who does nothing most of the time"

janish war .1
cabrerra war .3

Fangraphs has Cabrera and his 3 times more playing time at a 1.1 WAR compared to Janish .8.

so basically Cabrera has been more valuable because he was the only one allowed to play.

Man, I'm an idiot. I figured the incessant *****ing would cease with a big lead in the division. It's only just begun.

Why is the tone always negative? I mean, if that's the way you like to look at things that's your prerogative, but there are a lot of positive things to focus on when it comes to this team.

So not this. I am sorry and this is not personal, but this approach is the exact opposite of good leadership. Please understand that this is NOT fantasy baseball. You cannot plug in a player and he will perform exactly consistent with his stats. These are humans.

If you bench Phillips after last night, you let him know you do not believe in him... not in big games anyway. Self doubt is a very pernicious and persistent enemy that will take Babe Ruth and turn him into Rolando Roomes.

On OCab, this is a guy who does exactly what the coaches want... he works harder, watches more video and recovers from mistakes better than just about anyone on the team. This is EXACTLY the type of person you want to have playing with a young team in a big game... even if there is a more talented player on the bench as a result!

Coach's need to reward the players that exemplfy belief in a winning philosophy, even more so then to reward results. In other words, if you have a player like OCab, and (not to pick on him, but based on my time around him he fits the bill) Griffey competing for playing time. OCab does everything the coaches ask for and so much more in practice and the locker room. He owns up to his mistakes, but does not allow them to stay in his head, he works as hard or harder than anyone else, he listens to everything the coaches have to say, and most importantly, he shows a genuine interest in helping every other member of hsi team. However, he does not have the natural talent of Griffey. Griffey did not have to work as hard (and I want to be careful in saying I never saw the pre-2003 Griffey in person, so I am basing this on his last 5 years with the team) as many others, took some advice from coaches but ignored just as much, and probably most importantly, Griffey and the team would separate and deal with their problems as individuals after loses.

Both players are Vets with a reputation for success, but Griffey's was legendary, whereas OCab was just very good. Assuming Griffey ahs an OPS 50 points higher, who should you play?

Sundeck would scream for the higher statistical player. Baker is courageous to turn a deaf ear to that. First, if he played Griffey, well then if the team loses, its the players fault. If he plays OCab and the team loses, its HIS fault. I was never a fan of Baker before this year, but his courage in sticking with the team leaders has thoroughly impressed me. Second, if he plays Griffey, he tells his younger players to emulate a dependence more on natural athletic ability than hard work.

OCab has been a team leader all year.. noone doubts that. If Dusty kept him on the bench now that he is healthy, he is confirming what ever young player starts to suspect... that its all about natural talent rather than heart and effort. This leads to self-doubt, and we already covered what happens then.

For over two decades, I have studied leadership. I have seen how it tangibly changes "potential" in young men into reality and the absence of it turns great performance into failure. Decisions like sticking with Cordero... like telling Stubbs that he is pulled from the lineup to take extra hitting work and then rewarding that work by putting him right back in the lineup even though Hesiey had done very well while Stubbs was out, like continuing to play Miguel Cairo after a slow start, like keeping Masset in games when statistics had proved he no longer belonged, like keeping Bruce and Philips in the lineup during multiple slumps, and now, by playing Phillips and OCab over Valaika and Janish.

Like a leader, Dusty is going to stick with his vision and allow any blame for its failure to come primarily on him and to a lesser extent on the Vets who can handle it, rather than the kids that can't just yet. This is courage. This, I totally respect.
