Dude had a 6.17 ERA and walked 27 batters in 35 innings. I don't know what you were watching but he wasn't doing any better.

I don't think Volquez is te answer either, but his stuff is harder to hit when he does get it over and he has a chance. Harang's choices seem to be throw it over and pray or walk guys. If the move to Harang was to avoid having too many walks he shouldn't walk the pitcher or the guy hitting in front of the MVP candidate.

The Reds have three starters at this point. Bailey is the best hope for a 4th and after that its pretty bleak. I'd give Maloney a shot at this point. Maybe they start stretching out Chapman so he can go 6 by October.

No doubt Edinson has better stuff. That's definitely not in dispute. Volquez can be dominating. But when you're walking 8 batters per 9 innings, you are doing even worse a disservice than the guys just getting hit.

That said, I imagine Harang will be moved to the pen the rest of September and we'll see Volquez the next time around.

Gomes has to be close to leading the league in infield pop ups.

Fangraphs has 11 players having a higher percentage of pop ups, believe it or not.

Kurt Suzuki is the leader in the club house... an insane 21% of fly balls on the infield.

Granted, that is percentage of fly balls that are pop ups, and since Gomes does have a higher rate of fly balls overall, he may actually be a little higher on the list.

Colorado probably has fairly little scouting info on Maloney. They are in the PCL, so their guys haven't seen him in the minors.

Move on, try to get out of here with a win and get on the plane. That's 5-5 in this 10 game stretch and is really all we need at this stage.

Considering the Reds stranded, what, 13 guys? I would say the problem wasn't just the pitching. The offense got guys on base but didn't get them in.

If the Reds go up 7-0 in the 4th or 7-4 in the 5th, who knows how the game goes.

wow, The guy was really one of the best stats guy around. he was able to pull so much in minuets, truly a huge loss to the reds community.

In addition to being one of the very best at his job, "Daddy Wags" was really a wonderful guy. Always had a smile on his face, always liked to see his friends laugh, always asking you about your family and kids.

Mark was a big man, and he needed to be in order to fit a heart as big as he had. He put people first.

I knew Mark for nearly 30 years, and will miss him very much. He loved the Reds, the Xavier Muskies and the LaSalle Lancers, not necessarily in that order!!

I loved being able to hear Mark laugh on air of the TV games, especially when Chris Welsh was giving Thom (who is a dear friend of Mark's) a hard time about something or other. That goodhearted guffawing you could just barely hear in the background was Mark Wagner.

RIP, Daddy Wags.

Our season head-to-head record vs the Cards is inconsequential at this point, and we don't play the Cards again the remainder of the year. After this Rockie series we have 22 games remaining against some pretty poor teams, all sub-500, in Pitt, Ariz, Houston, and Milwaukee. We had a 3 game set vs the Pads (away) who lost 10 straight before breaking out of their skid.

Nothing is a given obviously, but if we keep playing like we have the course of the season we'll be alright. The Cards play some of those same teams but have three tough 4 game sets coming up vs ATL (away), and then SD and end the season with Colorado. The pressure is on them not us.

You are exactly right. If the Reds continue to beat up on the bad teams they will be in good shape. If not, they only have themselves to blame. The divison is on a silver platter for them at the moment. They just have to take it.

I hate watching baseball games in that park, and not just when the Reds are playing there. Everything is artificial due to the altitude. The OFers have to play deeper than usual, they have to specially treat the baseballs, the pitchers have to adjust, the hitters have to make sure they aren't trying to crank everything, and the Rockies don't even look like the same team when you play them there vs. in their own park.

I think we've lost 17 of the last 20 at Coors Field. Would be interesting to see how other NL teams shake down at Coors over the same amount of games played.
